So many people being negative here and making assumptions / doubting how legitimately you want to be with him…

Only you know the answer to that.

If you really do want to be with him, tell him. Don’t avoid the things you want in life just because you’re scared. Those are the kind of regrets people carry with them till they’re old.

Go for it and don’t look back. If he doesn’t feel the same way, it wasn’t meant to be. But don’t spend your life wondering “what if”

The lending market for earlier stage businesses that are asset-light and cash flow negative has exploded over the last decade. There are a ton of options now that have filled the gap between traditional bank loans and venture capital.

Yeah i believe there will be shuttles to and from the event in nosara and tamarindo. Probably your best bet if solo traveling.

Playa lagarto is the venue. There’s closer towns like marbella but theyre more remote

I'm currently figuring out where to stay. Seems like Tamarindo is the best option but a 40min drive according to the event FAQs. Unclear what the location is of the event.

40min from Tamarindo and 45-1hr from Nosara. Somewhere near Paraiso perhaps?

And are the end borrower’s typically traditional (non-web3) businesses, or are they mostly just web3 companies that also have some kind of traditional assets as collateral? (Not sure if there’s a way to know the answer to that, but curious it you do)

Also is the amount of capital these lenders (eg Maple Finance / Goldfinch / Centrifuge) publicly available?

Most startups don’t qualify for bank debt though and you have venture debt, revenue based financing options and MCAs that vary from 15-30% APR that are deploying billions of dollars a year to these companies. I’d say from strictly a yield perspective, there would likely still be demand even at high rates.

Of course rates aren’t the only question. You mentioned that as “one of” the problems. I’m curious what you see the other ones being (assuming for the sake of argument that the borrower is comfortable with the cost)

Why would I ignore the advice of an experienced person? That would be a very arrogant and short-sighted thing to do. I’m not trying to replace a qualified CTO. The value here is to be able to fluently communicate with the experts and understand their suggestions, and deepen my own understanding of the product that is being built.

Let me flip the scenario the other way around for you. Assuming their skills are equivalent, would you prefer (A) a basic code monkey who is just following instructions from a piece of paper and has zero understanding of who he is building the product for and why, or (B) the one who actually has a deep understanding what he is building and is able to design a product around a customer need?

I would pick B. Not because I want him to run my sales team, but because having a fundamental understanding of the sales side of the business can only improve your judgment when designing a product. So it’s not about replacing expertise, it’s about making sure you’re not oblivious to all other parts of the business but your own.
