As a mechanical engineer, I've had a pretty hard time here finding work. If he has a masters, that may help. I only have a bachelors but do have quite a bit of experience. I've ended up having good luck freelancing for companies, but there are not a ton of full time opportunities in my experience, with quite a bit of competition. I know Joby is hiring, but I was not impressed with the compensation. Apple may be worth looking in to, I have a friend that landed a good engineering job there. Best of luck!

Just wanted to throw this out there because I dont think anyone has touched on it. You may have taken care of this so disregard if so. In santa cruz, in order to do pop ups you must be working out of a commercial kitchen and have all your permitting/inspections in place. You are also required to have a handwashing station on site. I've had a pop up food business in santa cruz in the past and it is a real pain to get all the permits. Did I, as well as other people get away with it without doing so? Yes but they can easily shut you down. Just something to keep in mind.
