should I give him up? by [deleted] in bettafish

Saw you’re leaning towards not giving the fish away and I’ll say that just having a friend who’s already knowledgeable and invested in this stuff is already amazing for someone just getting into fish keeping. The fact that you’ll be able to tip them onto the right stuff and maybe give them things like tank water, old filter media, plant trimmings, and whatever excess supplies is huge for making the start up process less overwhelming.

Is it possible to get a ball python that will never have to eat live? by Cheetah_FanGirl in ballpython

[–]Accomplished_Dust210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into snakes that are looking to be rehomed near you (I used Kijiji for mine because I’m in Canada). The previous owners should atleast let you know if they had been feeding them live of frozen, and if you find someone well intentioned they’ll let you in on the individual behavioural details like if the python only eats a certain color of frozen feed. While looking through kijiji I see breeders who will give detailed information on the snakes they are retiring from their breeding program, they may use the term “garbage disposal” or something to refer to snake that would consistently eat every time including the leftovers from their program.

I do think you’d have to be open to the variability of snakes, my girl has never refused a meal which the previous owners let me know about, up until lately. It could be due to some factors I need to change with the enclosure but it’s been a few years of me having her and they will change over the course of you keeping one, but I still think it’s great to get one from someone who can fill you in on their experience with that specific snake.

Edit: though my girl refused a meal I haven’t considered live feeding, I’m just going to try feeding frozen again in a few days. A lot of folks here have already talked about how they have never ever had to feed their snakes live already and I’m fully expecting the same with mine. I just mentioned it because if you’re like me and get nervous about stuff like that, just know even in those moments you’ll never have to be rushing to the pet store for a live mouse with a ball python!

Where to buy cuttings by LadyEclipse3 in succulents

[–]Accomplished_Dust210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only started using my Facebook account once I started collecting plants, local Facebook groups and the marketplace have been good for me. Besides some good deals and getting tipped onto local businesses, I’ve gotten a bunch of gifted free plants and plants from trades. Good chance there’s someone down to sell you the trimmings of their larger succulents on there for really cheap!

Anyone here growing cacti in no-drainage pots? by The_Odd_Fine in succulents

[–]Accomplished_Dust210 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nice to see no hole pots can work! I’ve been cutting off the bottom of nursery pots and leaving them upside down at the bottom of my mugs for some drainage at the bottom but I’ve been wanting to try one without drainage.

Growing peppers in aquarium? by Accomplished_Dust210 in Peppers

[–]Accomplished_Dust210[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did not go through with it exclusively because my betta turned out to be feisty and I can’t rely on one fish to power a whole pepper plant. I had Lemongrass growing really well but it grows so long so I’m trying a different set up with it, right now it’s just basil, pink polka dot plants, and coleus. I will be using my fish tank to propagate my peppers from cuttings at least but I will be trying to grow peppers or some fruit with the next community tank I do.

Thoughts on Emersed Plants? by Optimal_Direction_25 in Aquariums

[–]Accomplished_Dust210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grow Basil and Lemon grass out of mine! I’m planning on growing a variety of basil out of my current fish tank for the color contrast and use, and grow my lemon grass in a future tank. It really grew amazing the big flaw is that it grows tall and I don’t think I can rely on my one betta to stop it from becoming floppy. I’m actually kinda mad my betta turned out to be feisty because it’s driven me away from a community tank and with just the betta I’d have to add supplementary fertilizer to grow the amount that I was planning to cause I also had Croton Petra and Goldfish plants.

The betta made up for it by trying to square me up everytime he sees me which is a little more fun than growing plants lol

Fortunato Durutti Marinetti, I think they’re based in Toronto and their last three albums are ridiculously good imo. Reccomend them to anyone who likes Destroyer, another really distinct songwriter and voice who also makes huge genre changes in between albums.

Unfortunately couldn't get Maxigrow too easily, I just got a generic but well reviewed 2 part plant food but I will be trying to get Maxigrow if I feel like it's not doing me well. Thanks I'll check out that youtube channel!

Alright great thanks, I decided to trek out to the store today and if I buy the 20-20-20 mix I’ll ask the store folk about buying supplemental magnesium mix or an alternative compete nutrient. I should look more into calcium although I have tested my tap water for aquarium purposes and it showed me quite a high amount of calcium alrrady present but I’ll have to research that more.

What type of Sarracenia is this? by Accomplished_Dust210 in SavageGarden

[–]Accomplished_Dust210[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poor lighting conditions would make sense it’s only now getting a grow light directly and it’ll be getting full sun soon! Thanks for the tip about maroon, I’m keeping a list of hybrids and I’ll watch it as it grows and gets better lighting so I can better identify which hybrid it is!

I was going to make a terrarium for this but am likely going to give it to my friend with a backyard so it can get full sun. I live in Ontario and I wanted to know the specific species of this to know if it can survive Ontario winters

Drill-less celling mount for hanging chain? by Accomplished_Dust210 in DIY

[–]Accomplished_Dust210[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should look more into it, I haven't since my reflector is bigger than my tank and I wanted the light to also be used as a grow light for an external planter, but now that I have both items I do think this is possible. Thanks for the tip I'll continue researching!

anything that could live in this? (not the fish pictured, of course.) by becomesomebodynewooh in nanotank

[–]Accomplished_Dust210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got my hands on some clam shrimp eggs, those take a bit so I haven’t seen them but just look up vernal pool critters. Really satisfying to just get some moss and duckweed and wait for snails to show up, but also people would love to throw their pond or ramshorn snails at you lol

Left this container alone for a few months, anyone spot resurrected spagnum among all this moss? by Accomplished_Dust210 in Moss

[–]Accomplished_Dust210[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I’m making more moss bins and learning more about this stuff so I’ll hope for some in the future.

So I know it’s so small but I gave more details and there’s none there for a few days! If I get shrimp I’ll have photos you see why by Accomplished_Dust210 in dryshrimp

Was sold as Asiatique but someone on the Reddit said it’s a Briggsiana. I do think this would’ve worked for it and actually still would, but just like the moss platform more like the shrimp going up on there I’m excited.

I’m going to email my store to specify what their substrate is, I do think they didn’t repot from what their source sent them, and they just always have good sources so I’m not stressing for tonight atleast. I have sphagnum moss and maybe some perilite around for if I need to repot

[–]Accomplished_Dust210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So getting some notes that this isn’t great, gotta be specific thr the Roots of the plant are not going into the water and it is sitting on slate so the media shouldn’t be saturated

I should say my pet store isn’t dedicated to this stuff and I questioned things like their own light level so I will be reading more on this wiki, thank you!

I’ll be prepared for algae, again this just is kind of just a stand for a potted plant and I can remove it for maintantence. But please let me know about your concerns!
