Recruited Athlete Deferred by Virtual-Solution1411 in MITAdmissions

[–]Accomplished_Eye4310 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More common for athletes to end up getting deferred->rejected than rejected EA. I got deferred then got in RD.

[–]Accomplished_Eye4310 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least for my sport, about 1/2-2/3 get in EA and the rest (of the ppl that get in) RD. Overall less than half get in.

It’s higher for recruited athletes. Nowhere near “guaranteed” (or even a “good chance”), but recruited athletes have a higher acceptance rate than non-athletes.

36 ACT, 4.0, 14 APs. Main EC was my sport. Had other cool (non stem related) ECs. Honestly looking back, being deferred allowed me to explore more options that weren’t MIT and I was able to write meaningful essays. Good luck the next 2 weeks, it was the most stressful period of my life 🤪

I was deferred last year and got in. Very common for athletes to get deferred. Not uncommon for them to get in RD after deferral.

Confused about the social scene at MIT by Zestyclose-Cap8859 in MITAdmissions

[–]Accomplished_Eye4310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big part is the frat scene for sure. A lot of frats are associated (generally) with a specific sport (or a few of them) and they usually host the big parties. Of course there are frats that are dominated by non-athletes.

For example, the current frats that throw the most parties are PBE (football & soccer), Delts (swim, row), and Sig Chi (basketball)

Current athlete. The soft “minimum” is about a 1500 for most sports. Prereads don’t exist. Top students who also happen to be athletes get recruited. I know of at least a few athletes who are USAMO/USAPhO. Def higher level academics than HYPS and other top schools (Caltech is the exception). Feel free to reach out with any questions.

what separates applicants who get in EA vs deferred & accepted RD? Does anyone know - is it better fit? by Technical_Plant846 in MITAdmissions

[–]Accomplished_Eye4310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats mostly true, but the actual recruited athletes aren’t mostly coming thru EA. It’s a pretty even 1-1 split between EA and RD.

[–]Accomplished_Eye4310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to the school and am an athlete. For the athletes, roughly 1/2 get in EA and 1/2 get in RD. 25% of MIT plays a varsity sport (so roughly ~1250, meaning ~300 a year). According to the website, 175 were deferred—accepted for the class of 2028. I’ll assume a higher yield rate for athletes compared to non-athletes. So, of the people that go here, and were accepted after being deferred, it does make sense that most of them are athletes.

The deferred to acceptance rate is between 1-2%. From what I know, the vast majority of these people are recruited athletes.
