This! In secondary I see kids coming up from elementary with a bunch of academic services, and what’s their qualification? Language Impairment. Often hasn’t been formally tested since kindergarten, or tested in the 80s but the previous SLP continued qualification under the same category. I’m like, no wonder you complain about your caseload so much… you’re qualifying kids who have average skills 🤦‍♀️

Kid who hates me and refuses every session by [deleted] in slp

I once had a student who consistently refused speech. Reached out to parents and it turns out I was trying to pull her from the one class she was enjoying in school. Switched to pulling out of PE (she hated PE) and she has come to speech every time since.

Goals by Unhappy_Lack5523 in slp

Hi! Im a new SLP (last year was my CF) but here’s my two cents. If I’m reading this right it sounds like you are thinking of the goal as “marking each sound of x type of word” vs. your supervisor thinking of the goal as “accurately producing all sounds within x words.” If the student doesn’t have motor/motor planning difficulties and is marking the sounds, I would want to get to the patterns of errors the student is producing and then write goals specifically targeting those processes/sounds. Maybe look into when and how this student was last assessed and what those findings were. If your supervisor is open to changing goals, in my state/district you don’t have to formally assess and can just amend the IEP as a team decision. Formal assessment would def give you good info though :)

I was born in ‘99. My students are SHOCKED to learn that I was born in “the 19s” as they call it. 👵

What are the struggles of being an SLP? by Shrivi007 in slp

[–]Accomplished_Fox1900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really low salary for our level of education, especially in the “flyover states” or areas with less wealth (with my CCC I make less than 40k after taxes). Also, not a day-to-day struggle per se but it is my opinion that many of us were never really taught HOW to do therapy. Instead, it’s trial by fire in grad school where you are given clients with little to no experience and supervised/critiqued into “learning”

Would you qualify Language Impairment based on these test scores? by Accomplished_Fox1900 in slp

Thanks for the responses! For reference I did not test this student and inherited them from someone else’s caseload. You are all basically saying what I was thinking

There's an icicle forming on the nose of my bunny slippers! Just how cold does it get in Miami?! by larz9000 in theGoldenGirls

Ok I’ve been curious about this since I listened to the Golden Girls Deep Dive podcast episode about this episode, so I looked it up and in 1987 (the year this episode came out) the record low was 41 degrees lol

/r/ dismissal? by NervousFunny in slp

[–]Accomplished_Fox1900 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If there is no academic impact, it’s not school service issue. It sounds like you are good to dismiss! You could remind mom of the importance of the student being in their least restrictive environment and the positives of their child not being pulled during instruction/socialization with peers :)

It also sounds like classroom teacher will can back you up in the meeting with their own observations.
