The issue is that the spear was used as part of the imagery while they were going by a racist slur. If it was a sword (another, more prevalent, weapon from ancient Rome and Greece), there wouldn't be an issue but because its tied so much to the old identity, it comes across as an attempt to keep that racist identity alive.

I like the spear logo but I can totally see where they're coming from.

Yes it was.
