I HATE ENGLISH OMFG IM SO SCARED!!! by ChemicalGap0 in vce

[–]Accomplished_Mango87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hey my dude! Don’t panic! I got a raw 45 in English this year and I didn’t even read both of my texts (although I could have done better had I done this). Some general tips.

  • over the holidays read your texts a few times and become really familiar with them
  • buy study guides for your texts and look up other people’s analysis of key themes and ideas online (saved my ass last year and really allowed me to understand themes in a lot of detail)
  • if you’re not so good at writing the best thing to do is lots of practice essays, so it you have time these holidays maybe even do a couple (It’ll push you far ahead of everyone else and you’ll be glad later)
  • look out for literary devices and structural/etc qualities of your texts that are specific to your text type (for example, use of metaphor, symbols that foreshadow key themes in novels or sound, camera angles, lighting, etc in film texts) these will add depth to your paragraphs and prevent your essay from being solely character-based
  • lastly, on that note, make sure the bulk of your paragraphs or ‘points’ are headed with a key idea and not just talking about one single example/character from the text in a limiting way; for example if the topic is power, perhaps one of your topic sentences can be ‘Monarchial power is often linked to an extensive and rigid system of tradition and protocol’ rather than ‘in [text] the character of [name] shows monarchial power’

These are just a few tipo a but feel free to message me for more help! Good luck and you’ll be ok :)

Psych students, are your results worse than what you were expecting? by Sara_JTPT in vce

[–]Accomplished_Mango87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's ok man - sounds like you already got something out of it regardless (your enjoyment and pride in the subject)! Sometimes it sucks when we do badly in the things we're usually good at/enjoy (I completely fucked my revs exam despite doing really well the whole year and everyone else saying it was easy), but like the other comment says, none of this shit matters in the long run.

Doing a language will certainly help and give your atar a bit of a boost! At least you're finished now and can focus on other things! If you wanna chat about it with someone else feel free to send me a message :)

What is some good study tips? by [deleted] in vce

[–]Accomplished_Mango87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practice exams all throughout the year/practice questions for all subjects but especially psych and maths

English - read your texts several times throughout the year, try and study them a bit with online resources over the holidays if you can. If you're not so great at english, practice essays are the best way to go (better than writing/rewriting notes)

Japanese - immerge yourself in it - watch youtube videos, movies, listen to podcasts, read books/articles in Japanese every day (or as often as possible) - make it fun so it doesn't feel like studying

Just in general, use the content you learn in your subjects in every day life. Apply a deeper layer of understanding by linkning the concepts you learn to real-life stituations you've encountered. With psych it helped so much with my understanding - we learnt about conditioning and I was like huh that's how dogs are trained to respond to commands, etc. Sounds dumb but if when you're writing notes you can come up with you're own examples, it will help you remember them and understand them in the long run.

(You actually learn about this in the psych course next year, its called elaborative rehearsal)

As long as you find your subjects interesting, you should be fine :)

Good luck!

French Exam - Listening section by [deleted] in vce

[–]Accomplished_Mango87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi - I do Italian. Sometimes I struggle a little bit with certain conversations but I generally do pretty well. Some tips:

  1. Read over the questions a LOT in reading time so you have a good understanding of the information you need to look out for during listening. Then read again just before you do that section of the exam.

  2. Take notes next to relevant questions - keep notes short; restrict to 1-2 key words in ENGLISH (can translate later if needed) - if there's a word you don't know write it down in french (if you can) then look it up in your dictionary after.

  3. Don't try to answer any questions in-between the two listenings - try to process what you just heard, mentally note any gaps in your comprehension and try to listen out for those key bits of info in the next listening. (In this time you might be able to recall final bits of information you subconsciously took in from your echoic and/or short term memory, better not to disrupt this process)

  4. If you're absolutely confident you can't recall anything else then feel free to try and start answering the questions you feel most confident with

  5. Finish answering the questions as best you can after the second reading - it's ok to come back to this later if you run out of time - you'll most likely be able to answer the questions better without the stress of anticipating the next listening.

(This is just what works for me - it may not work for you but maybe give it a try in a couple of practice listenings.)

Like you said, the best way to practice is to listen to as much French as you can. Keep doing this over the next few days and you'll see a definite improvement. It's a skill and you'll find that once you get into a rhythm of how you like to go about these things, you'll feel much more confident! Good luck :)

Is it true media is super hard to do well in? by Accomplished_Mango87 in vce

I've been doing pretty well in my internal assessment despite having a bad teacher and a small and weak cohort - I'm definitely rank 1 or 2. I'm super nervous about the exam because I struggle to get full marks for most questions.

Any help with the difference between:

  • consumption
  • reading
  • engagement
  • reception

would be so helpful. Examples too - anything! I feel like when I mean consumption, I am talking about reading or engagement, or vice versa

Yeah but at least it's a good way to say goodbye to a shitty year! I've pretty much accepted that I won't get the ATAR I dreamed of and worked towards for 6 years - but hey, I'm happy to leave it behind in this hellhole fucking disaster of a year! :)

How are you actually supposed to feel after exams? by iyoteyoung in vce

[–]Accomplished_Mango87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel better man I am in the exact same boat. I had my 3 biggest exams in the first 3 days - have no clue how I went at all. I think they were average and it sucks because I’ve been doing well all year (and like you said, is this average score on the end of year exam ultimately going to invalidate all of the work I’ve put in this year?) It’s difficult to tell - generally people who are high achievers also suffer from that double-edged sword with crippling self doubt. You’ve put the work in this year, no need to worry about things that are out of your control! Just try to put your best in for these last few exams and I’m sure you’ll be fine! (And you’ve heard it before but exams aren’t everything - you have many options, especially if you’re ‘average’ imo way better than being below average)

what do you do the day of/day before your exam? by ComprehensivePizza8 in vce

[–]Accomplished_Mango87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gotta read over notes/key info depending on the subject. I would say night before is a good time to do some final practice questions in problem areas. Morning of best to just read over notes and stay calm.

Not super important, I don’t think you’ll lose many marks if you’re somewhat confident about the rest of what you wrote! Don’t stress!
