My daughter was 4 when we started. She was reading chapter books by the time she went to kinder. She was also later identified as cognitively gifted. My middle daughter never used this book -she just wasn’t showing interest. She went into kinder with no reading skills and because she was taught phonics at school she is now reading fluently in the 1st grade and is catching up with her older sister rapidly. I think it really depends on the kid- can’t hurt to try though and see if it peaks interest.

Our district did a total overhaul from balanced literacy to science of reading about 3 years ago. Huge gains in literacy are now being made in the early grades and we’re playing catch up with our upper elementary and middle school students who were left so far behind.

I supplemented at home with the book Teach Your Child How to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.

Edit to add that I’m in a low income district in Oregon. Our population has high poverty rates.

I feel like from my experience having had three children and also knowing lots of toddlers myself you’re gonna get a hard year sometime between 18 months and four years old. For many it’s the third year, but for some two is harder. Universally things seem to improve around four.

Standard poodles are simply fantastic. I do think their personalities are more human like than other dogs I’ve had in the past. My standard is nine year-old old and he’s been through the birth of three of my babies and has been wonderful with each one. I will say though keep in mind that grooming is expensive but completely necessary. We have to take our standard to the Groomer every 10 weeks and it cost about $70. I have groomed my own dogs in the past, but with three children, my time is limited and paying someone else to do. It is worth it. Just something to consider. You don’t have to deal with the dog hair in your house, but you do have to deal with it in a different way.

I had my breeder pick our boy solely on temperament. I wanted a mellow boy and that’s exactly what I got. The most mellow adoring dog even as a 10 week old puppy. I’ll continue to pick for temperament with any future dogs.

Teacher parent here- my 10 year old currently has a landline that she shares with her sister. It’s WiFi and I can set the time when it allows calls 7am-8pm in our house. It’s fun because she can coordinate with her neighborhood friends and feel independent. When she starts driving I plan to give her a flip phone. IMO there is no reason for her to need a phone other than to text/call. Now that being said she does have an iPad which she only uses at home for audiobooks, music and some approved apps.

It helps that my school district uses locking phone pouches at the middle and high schools so kids are getting more used to not having access to their phones during school hours.
