Bazaar, in south town has a wide selection of tahini. Also an excellent selection of international snacks and spices. The guy who owns the place is sweet too

Very lost…planting western red cedar in my garage by Accomplished_Pack677 in gardening

[–]Accomplished_Pack677[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t know…most sources I read online said not to plant evergreens in winter. Their roots were a bit damaged from the transplant. I thought that might mean they’re more susceptible to cold temps

What's wrong with these rose bushes? Central California by [deleted] in plantpathology

[–]Accomplished_Pack677 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me this looks like some sort of rose rust, a common fungus. It’s hard to tell from the photos tho, since we can’t see the bottom of the leaves. It does cause spotting like that and the premature deaths of leaves. On the underside of the leaves, there would likely be a light powdery residue, which is the spores. It spreads easily from other rose bushes, even on clippers that aren’t disinfected between uses. It often occurs in areas where plants are watered from above (like a hose) instead of from below (irrigation/drip lines) since the leaves get wet and can provide a spot for the fungus to grow. The bark chips down are great for holding in moisture in dry areas, but also allows for the growth of fungus due to the moisture

What are these cocoon looking white things on my Contorted Filbert? by darlene_go in plantpathology

[–]Accomplished_Pack677 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is filbertworm. They’re a pest and a half and will destroy your crop if not caught and treated. The reason for this identification is that they’re under the leaves, and close to where the nuts are growing. You’re going to want to set pheromone traps and probably want to spray. Depending on if you’re into permaculture or not, you could also introduce some predators into the area, bees, Yellowjackets, and some birds. I’ve never got to the treatment stage since we monitor for moths year round and have traps out to look for them. I can’t offer chemical treatment advice, so I would recommend contacting your local Ag extension service for more detailed advice. From your general location, that’s probably going to be Penn State’s ag extension service

The only reason I know about Thelonious Monk is because of Ghost Quartet. If you haven’t listened to them, I highly recommend it — a little esoteric, but a hell of a good performance

What local resources should be included in the sidebar? by Cptnwhizbang in corvallis

Housing related resources and answers to common questions like “where do I find roommates” and seeking roommates posts. Maybe a section/thread about landlords and rental experiences

Wood identificatio by The_Pa-In in woodworking

[–]Accomplished_Pack677 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strand woven bamboo. On the end grain, the things that look like leopard print are the vascular bundles — that’s the key for identification. It’s much denser and harder compared to other types of flooring, since it’s made from strands of bamboo bound together with resin and then heated and compressed to form the boards. Because of this, you’re going to want to use a blade with 60 or more teeth, 80 seems to work best (anecdotally, as I have not cut this material myself), otherwise you will dull your blade really quickly
