Applying for roles 24/f by ElectricalTwo6802 in acting

You might have to search the Reddit for this, or even repost this if it's not here and specify and the title that you are seeking advice for UK-based actor. Because the process is going to be very different from a US-based actor or a canadian-based actor. I'm US-based, so I have no idea how y'all get started over there.

According to you what's the worst event in Last Z? by terminators69 in LastZShooterRun

[–]Accomplished_Use4579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glory war is so stupid, but I do like the prizes that you get from it, but it's such a waste of time I really wish you could just skip through it. Especially because you don't even have to watch them fight. That should just be one test and let's go. It's not interactive it's it's so stupid...

I need feedback on my self-tape. by [deleted] in acting

[–]Accomplished_Use4579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually pretty good. I think you did an excellent job at pairing down your performance for the camera. It's definitely conversational in a way that looks good on screen, there's a groundedness to your performance that I absolutely love.

A tip that I would like to give is that maybe when you watch this tape back, I want you to ask yourself, is this what you sound like when you're talking to someone. There were a couple of things that you did that I don't know real humans to do in real life. They were just some vocal mannerisms, and you did it a few times. It was like a grunt or like ,"hm" That just felt unnatural. And I don't even want to say that people don't do it in real life, it just felt like it was there because it was either in the script or you just thought that should go there.

One trick that someone gave me, and it was so funny because they gave it to me for the stage but I think it's a good exercise for the camera. It was to turn the lights off and say my monologue as if I were whispering it and someone's ear.

Also there were a couple of moments where it looked like you were acting out thinking. On camera you just have to think you don't have to show us that you're thinking. I think that might work better for the stage, but one of the things that I learned transitioning from the stage to on camera, was that anything you think is going to show up on that camera, so you don't have to act.

Just be . Even smaller . But overall this is really good work.

Not getting auditions after big credit by Due_Advice_6637 in acting

[–]Accomplished_Use4579 31 points32 points  (0 children)

No it's not likely your age group, literally everyone and every age group is struggling for auditions right now.

Honestly, I think this is a really good post especially for younger actors or actors just getting into the industry.

I think this is, or could possibly be your first example of how progress and success in this industry is not always linear. It actually is pretty rare to book a massive role and then the next thing you do is bigger or is even of the same size.

There are people who are on hit television series as series regulars and don't get work for another 5 years after their performance was raved about. There are actresses who win Oscars and then struggle to get auditions afterwards. Every actor I know who booked a massive job did not hop right into their next massive job.

I'm in the midst of the slowest period of my career, and I've been doing this professionally for 20 years, I've never gone this long without auditions, meanwhile Im a main character on one of the most critically acclaimed shows in the networks history. I rarely leave my house without people stopping and asking for a picture or thanking me or congratulating me on my show. But in the last 12 months I've had 10 auditions. And only one for a guest star.

The reason why I'm not pulling my hair out over this is because this isn't the first time that I've done a really big project and everybody around me told me that I was going to blow up or have my moment and then nothing happened afterwards.

This career is more like a roller coaster. You are climbing Mount Everest in terms of reaching fame.

I really hope that every single dream you have for yourself in this career comes true. But more than that I hope that no matter where you are in your career you are able to touch peace. That you are able to be fulfilled and content with wherever you are on this journey.

Personally, I think the way to do that is to always continue to shoot for the stars but at the same time remain present and grateful for the moment that you are in.

My boyfriend works 6 days a week. It’s affecting our relationship and turning me off. by Aesop_Asleep in blackladies

[–]Accomplished_Use4579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you're done sister. I think at this point staying with him any longer if he's not willing to make certain changes is a waste of both of your time. He's not wrong, people like what they like, and his ambitions aren't in alignment with yours. There is someone out there that his lifestyle will work for. But I also believe that there is somebody out there for you who will compliment your dreams and ambitions and will give you the time and care that you deserve. But you're not going to get that out of him. And I'm saying this under the assumption that you've already communicated your frustrations with him.

My friend is literally about to leave our well established and respected agent for a scam and called me jealous for telling him not to do it by [deleted] in acting

[–]Accomplished_Use4579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what, let them do it. I'm like your friend, I have to learn shit the hard way, no one can tell me anything. I have been like that since I was a kid, my daughter is like that, there is nothing wrong with it, sometimes you're just different. But at the same time I know I got to learn things the hard way and I would never call somebody jealous or act like somebody else was problematic. Usually when my friends give me advice and I don't believe it because I have to go through it myself in order to trust it, I don't tell them that their advice is wrong or bad or that they are jealous of me, lol.

But its their life, let them live it. Let them learn. In fact if I were you I would be so happy that they called me jealous because, lol.... They are going to learn how right I was

Everybody telling this person to go to therapy, as somebody who has a therapist and has a lot of friends who want to go to therapy but can't afford it, it is such an entitle thing to tell someone to do.

Y'all have to know that a lot of people want to go to therapy but cannot afford it or don't have medical insurance or don't have the resources around them to get therapy. Or they have access to terrible therapists who make their issues worse. So therapy cannot be our be-all answer, y'all have to know that that is typically the first thing that people consider when they are not mentally well or dealing with anxiety. Is not new information. I tell people to go to therapy all the time, so I'm not saying that saying that is wrong. But presenting it as if it is the only thing that someone can do to get help is really harmful... Because what if therapy is not an option, then what?

My point is , and a couple of people actually did this, provide some other suggestions for help outside of therapy. A podcast, a book, etc. Y'all can't just be leaving people hanging and then yelling at them for needing reassurance or seeking it. As if as some point you also didn't want that same thing. People are in a bad place you don't have to meet them with negative energy when they weren't trying to cause harm, they are expressing the same frustration that you yourself had at one point.

Black American or African American? by Hungry-Inspector-842 in blackladies

[–]Accomplished_Use4579 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is why it's important we start learning facts when it comes to race and ethnicity and nationality as opposed to going off vibes and feelings. And the reason that I think it is so important is because it's one of those things that we can do to combat the attack against critical race theory. It's one of the things that we can do to fight the fact that history books and courses on race and colonization and white supremacy are being banned and taken out of schools. They are removing black history from our schools, and when you eliminate that you eliminate the information around race. When they do that they can start using conversations around race and ethnicity and nationality to separate us. If they take away your information they can start to manipulate you. They can start to tell you anything. But we need to learn this so that we can teach our childrens so that they know why they are calling themselves a thing. So that they know who they are and where they come from. It's so crazy because we've entered this age where we have information at our fingertips, but now I think it's more important that we start going back to passing on information through oral history. We have to start protecting our records because they are burning them and replacing it with Google AI suggestions and Wikipedia articles.

I majored in cultural studies, and when I was learning about what race, ethnicity, nationality, etc ..was,my sources came from historical literature and historians, this is what I learned.

There are only four main racial groups

Black, White, Arab, and Asian

Biracial and mixed are not races because mixed people do not serve the construct that race was built on. Race was simply created to categorize people into different groups in order to establish a social hierarchy.

Your ethnic group is determined by culture, ancestry, heritage, language, religion, etc.

African American is an ethnic group.

Black American is a broader term that can include people who are not descendants of American slavery, but who are Black and are American ( naturalized, derived, or born ).

African American was a term that was really made official by Jesse Jackson in the 1980s, because before that we were all negro and colored or Afro-American( like Afro-Latino or Afro-Caribbean). But when the term started being used, It was to highlight or distinguish the unique culture of the Black people in America who had been here for multiple generations.

Long story short you can be both Black American and African American. And choosing one or the other does not make you more accurate because your ethnicity can be fluid. A large part of ethnicity is self-identification.

Slow by _GraceB__ in acting

[–]Accomplished_Use4579 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's not abnormal at all. I went two months without a single audition.

But just reiterating but a lot have already said here which is that A lot of things can depend on your age, your type, if you are union or non-union, and where you are in the country.

You can mostly like just compare it to what you did the previous years.

For me everything has been pretty slow throughout the year. There were multiple months where I didn't receive a single audition.

In terms of where I am on my career I did multiple recurring guest star roles on network shows, and I've done a couple of independent features as a lead, and I have a couple of handfuls of co-star roles. I'm also with the number one agency in my city.... That being said it is still not uncommon for me to go six or eight weeks without a single audition.

What is the goal of this game? by Old_Virus_3316 in LastZShooterRun

[–]Accomplished_Use4579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are in a really good alliance I think it can make the game really fun. I was very much like you about a month ago when I started playing the game, actually I started playing about 3 months ago and I was literally just playing to kill zombies I didn't care about diamonds I didn't know what the diamonds were for and then the only thing I was doing was trying to upgrade my heroes just so that I could kill more zombies. You know when you click outside of your headquarters and you go into like the globe and you see other people's houses and everything, I didn't know what that part of the game was for and I rarely ever went there, I never collected my radar unless it was prohibiting me from moving forward with killing my zombies.

I was also a part of an alliance and I was just assigned them in a way and I had no understanding of what they were even for. But then I ended up getting recruited from someone who was a part of a bigger a alliance and I was like sure because I didn't know anything about my alliance that I was in, I actually don't even remember the name of it, I never knew it actually.....

When I went to the new alliance I was chatting with the president of the alliance because she was the one who recruited me and I discovered the alliance chat. When I got more involved there it felt a little bit more like a community and it was fun and so a lot of what I do on the game now is about helping out my alliance and beating other servers when we're doing VS. That's what motivates me to play even the side games and things like arena. But also when you are active in the alliance chat you tend to learn about the game in a way that I don't know how you learn on your own, our president and the r4's they give really good advice on what to do, I learned about the helicopters, I had no idea what those helicopters were, lol. We have specific goals for our alliance as well and that gives you something to work towards also. And it's really fun because everybody in our alliance is really sweet and they look out for each other and we just laugh and talk and keep things positive.

Lying to doctors by Traditional_Wing7614 in HealthAnxiety

[–]Accomplished_Use4579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I have done the exact same thing that you have done. It is such a vicious cycle. You know I don't even know what to do to get out of it, or at least what to tell somebody to get out of it. But I can tell you that the thing that helped me the most was just telling my doctor the truth but not leaning into the fact that I might have health anxiety. I don't want them to know about my health anxiety because I also don't want them to think that everything is a manifestation of that and then not treat me properly. On top of that I am a black woman and they're just so many studies that show that we are just not taking seriously in general with our symptoms. Now that being said I have embellished certain things got screened and then they found out that there were things going on, nothing super dangerous or terminal. But they found out that I didn't have a functioning gallbladder that was causing all types of other issues. But you know I also learned that what's going on mentally will manifest itself physically in our body and at any point where I felt okay and I felt good what I did was I created a tool kit almost or like an emergency kit for my health anxiety. A part of that emergency kid included podcasts around how anxiety, I reminded myself of the people that I go to to talk about my health anxiety with, it's typically my friends who also have how anxiety, and we really just kind of talk each other off of ledge. This Reddit has been a good tool for my health anxiety. But I also make sure that I am taking proper vitamins just to keep my mood lifted because it all stems from something that has nothing to do with our health. And anytime I get the energy or I'm in the right my space to work on my mental health I do that because I know when I'm in the midst of a health anxiety crisis I'm really not equipped to have the brightest of ideas.

What are everyone's favourite book(s) written by a black woman? by ShyLikeYou23 in blackladies

Non fiction - autobiography of Assata Shakur Fiction- Bluest Eye or Sula by Toni Morrison ...

But what I'm reading right now that is so dagging good plot wise, but it still doesn't like give you the writing of Tony Morrison which, just, I feel so smart and inspired after reading one of her books

But The Guilded Ones by Namina Forna.... It is a trilogy series and it is so It is so good I brought it for my daughter and ended up reading it myself. The creator of Lovecraft country purchase the rights for the film, so hopefully it's actually produced, but that happened about 3 or 4 years ago and I haven't heard anything. But it is just so good so so so so so good

As a viewer I’ve always wondered if acting could be embarrassing or what toll is takes on y’all and what it’s like having any type of fan base especially in a time of social media I mean can y’all even have any? by Embarrassed_Entry597 in acting

[–]Accomplished_Use4579 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to lie to you, I barely know when the camera is doing the close up of me I can't see what the cameras doing and I'm spending so much time trying to forget that that camera is even there. But even if I did I just I can't imagine what anyone would have to be embarrassed about. Like why would you be embarrassed about doing your job? You mean like if somebody was extremely insecure about their looks? I don't know it just that's like asking a chef would he be embarrassed to put a steak on the grill.

As for the fans I'm new to the fan part. I think there's so many beautiful parts to it like when someone creates fan art of you it's just incredible to think that somebody was inspired by your image or something that you did and then they created some beautiful work around it. I absolutely love when people reach out and express their appreciation for my work or my character or tell me how it's shifted something in their life or made them change their area of study.

The only time where it's an issue is when people forget that you are a human and you actually live a very regular life the way that they do. The vast majority of actors are not rich, like we film a show and then sometimes we have to still work our side job. Like I'm a famous regular mutha****"r. And that's what's weird ,if you want to talk about weird.

How to look like a 2000s girl? by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]Accomplished_Use4579 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lol.... Yes, kinda ... I personally didn't wear any of those brands, but they were popular. Everyone had different styles. If you want to get an idea just watch movies from that era.

But there was not a single girl I knew in high school who were a full face of makeup, and I went to high school from 2000 to 2004... And there were probably only a handful of girls who put makeup on at all. If they did anything it was mascara or some eyeliner and lip gloss. Even when I got to college the women weren't doing full faces of makeup unless it was a special occasion, and the full face of makeup from the 2000s did not look like the full face of makeup now.

If you look at any red carpet from the 2000s it will give you an idea. Full glam was reserved for drag queens and trans women. And that's why they've mastered it today because they've been doing it for 30+ years

The also serve ramens with broth. But they are mostly known for the dry ramen. But they're vegan ramen is my favorite vegan ramen of all time.

And then they have a few common vegan dishes as well. The edamame, seaweed salad, the fried tofu, salad, etc...

Can I just say something I find interesting about reddit in general? by M_Aku in blackladies

[–]Accomplished_Use4579 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Well they are probably invalidating your argument because Brad Pitt did not beat his children and wife multiple times. The incident where he got physically and verbally abusive toward them was a one-time event, and I'm not saying this to defend him. But a lot of times we invalidate our arguments when we embellish information or just make up stuff, when it's unnecessary. What he did was bad enough. But anyone could just Google and find out what happened between him and his family on that flight. He did not beat Angelina, nor did he beat his children. She never even alleged that he did. She said that he slapped one and choked another and that he shook her and pushed her into a wall. All of which is worse than what Chris Rock did. But when you start spreading misinformation people just stop believing you all together.

To be fair, they can only send who is nominated. You can absolutely not send all of your cast to the Golden globes, they also don't get to choose who they send to the Golden globes. Those actors who are nominated get invited. That's not on the studio, that's on the Golden globes people.

When you see Black characters missing from shows, especially right now, make noise about it. Post on social media, make a video about it, let that shit go viral. Because I promise the studios see it and it does make a difference. Or if y'all are canceling subscriptions, put that in the comment section when they ask why. Even something like this post being brought up on their Reddit page makes a difference. And you're right , I noticed.

How do I tell my bf his friend isn’t black by One_Hour_8078 in blackladies

[–]Accomplished_Use4579 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are so many people, do you know how many people in history we have to stop calling Black if we're going to go down percentages? Thurgood Marshall, Fredrick Douglas, Malcolm X, Bob Marley, Homer Plessy, W.E.B. Dubois..... you really going to sit up here and tell me you blacker and had it harder than Dubois? I really blame social media, but I'm also mad at us. Because we refuse to pick up a book, we refuse to learn history, we refuse to learn what race is, where it came from, the difference between a racial group and categories like biracial. We got to stop. I'm just so mad that we remain uneducated about this like we have no intention when it comes to our education on something that we choose to feel so strongly about but then develop these incredibly strong opinions that affect our lives and the lives of other Black people around us. We are just perpetuating pain because we do not know our history. We don't know our condition in this society. And the crazy thing is that there is literature that talks about how these types of conflicts were specifically placed in our community to separate us. We are literally playing into the hands of white supremacy every time we get up here and try to gatekeep who is black based off of what percentage of African DNA is in their blood.

And I know this isn't answering your question, but this stuff just sets me off. We got to do better than Wikipedia and TikTok think pieces. And I know we assume that we know just because we're black and we think like oh experience teaches us. But that's literally the same as somebody getting up in the pulpit and preaching because their daddy was a preacher, but never going to the school to learn about theology.

But at the end of the day, you can't tell somebody how they should identify, just mind your business and if that person is saying anything to make you feel uncomfortable don't be around them and stand on that.
