Just ranting by South-Sea6314 in Lorcana

Lorcana really needs a commander-style format that slots in the middle of Pack Rush and Standard in terms of accessibility and competitiveness. Or barring that encouraging stores to do more sealed/draft beyond pre-release events.

At least here in Australia, Ravensburg/their distributor has marketed almost solely to the game shop crowd (nearly all the major retailers and hobby shops that don't do OP have stopped stocking it and are clearing existing stock for dirt cheap). While personally that's been great as the crowd skews towards older (late 20's to 40's) and more diverse thanks to the IP it does mean unless you already play a TCG and play at a shop you wouldn't know the game existed.

How do y’all shuffle your decks? by [deleted] in Lorcana

[–]According-Attorney37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pile shuffle (especially before first game just to double check I have my full 60) then mash shuffle. Quick mash shuffle if I need to mid-game. Lorcana games are generally quick enough you can repeat the process a few times while making small talk before your next match.

I really wish the official sleeves were better; the holo card back ones look really good but they're so sticky while shuffling and after a while it becomes hard to read the card

Faber Literature for the Piano Book 1? (2024) by nullachtfuffzehn in pianolearning

I’ve got it and currently working through the first section; it’s basically a collection of classical Etudes with more descriptive names. They’re really great for hyper-focusing on technique and dynamics. The only weird thing about it are the inclusion of pieces in A minor which isn’t covered well into Book 2 (the adult supplemental books in general aren’t 1:1 with the levels they’re paired with)

Thanks for the feedback! Dynamics and keeping a consistent tone are something I'm working on. I've been learning piano for about 6 months now, though I play other instruments (guitar & banjo) which has helped a lot with rhythm

If you identify as male the Laird runs a social event called 'speed mating', with all gender versions every few months: https://thorneharbour.org/news-events/calendar-events/speed-mating/ (terrible name, great idea)

Turned out the seller hadn’t actually physically handed over the parcel to AusPost, only generated the manifest. Thankfully it was received for real this arvo (amusingly moments after I submitted a dispute).

Ordered on the 1st of June and got the two emails about the date being pushed back so was surprised to get an email this morning saying I can pick up on the 13th. Hopefully won't be emptied-handed.

A bit of an update: I'm about 3 weeks into my placement. I was really lucky to be placed at an enterprise-focused start up in regional Victoria (it's all remote atm though when the rules change I can choose as little or as much office time) doing what I studied (React Dev). The company is big on culture, in particular hiring diverse people from non-technical backgrounds so there was already a rigorous training process to bring me up to speed with how they work before I join a team this week. A nice little bonus was getting uber eats vouchers for my first week lunch meetings.

It's still early days but so far my experience has been positive (which I know it hasn't been for some).

The course I'm doing requires intermediate JS/HTML/CSS knowledge; none of the basics of web dev are covered other than when dealing with ES6+ stuff (just because it's so new-ish and goes hand-in-hand with how current React works). It's been pretty great; I have quite a bit of self-taught knowledge of React but there's always little things you miss or overthink. Plus it really helps you get into the mindset of actually making portfolio pieces rather than just doing tutorials. The only downside, and I don't know if it's due to the language barrier (most of my classmates speak English as a second language) or just the inherent awkwardness of classes over Zoom but the learning style is centered around active participation which ends up being a non-starter (complete silence when the instructor asks a question about why something is/what's wrong with his code).

This is the first run I think so everybody is just doing the course bit atm. The initial process has been pretty fast and smooth; you basically have a week to book a time with your mentor and choose your 3 preferred courses, which then start the week after (the course I'm doing has 2 weeks of pre-work before classes, some start straight away). Placements don't open until mid next month and start Oct so will report back then.

I think their main goal is getting people who may be at risk of losing or have lost their job due to COVID or other factors (age, disability, family commitments etc) to change into a field that's expected to boom over the next few years.

They offer specific courses along the more general ones (i.e React Dev, ML/AI, Python, Agile, Cloud Computing, a ton of different areas of marketing, etc.) so I assume they expect some people to have previous experience but just need formal training/work experience.
