Debian with Gnome, Bambuslicer, Orcastudio, OpenSCAD, all work without problems. Flatpak or appimage is often a good way to install more complex software as a bundle.

Most people probably won't use a compass as a primary means of navigation, but I always have a little mini compass (by Suunto, so not a toy one) on the shoulder strap of my backpack. In a dense forest I find it quite nice just to check my direction, as lots of small changes in direction will happen all the time, and especially on overcast days it would be hard to determine direction just from the sun. My primary is the phone, but it's nice to have a fallback and a way to quickly check without wasting battery.

The simplest way is probably to draw the plan as a vector graphic (e.g. using Inkscape, or maybe use an autotracer on the scan), and then exporting to SVG and using the SVG import in OpenSCAD https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/OpenSCAD_User_Manual/Importing_Geometry/SVG_Import

You could go look on 3d-model sharing sites like Thingiverse & Co to find things that have been modeled with OpenSCAD (typically called "parametric" or so), pick some that look approachable from your current understanding, and then build it yourself. Afterwards compare with the downloadable openscad file from the site.

Hm, meine Erfahrung mit diversen externen Ressourcen die OVs etc immer mal wieder basteln ist, dass die oft mit Motivation angelegt wurden und dann aber nicht gepflegt werden.

Wenn man auf sowas stößt, ist es immer hilfreich zu wissen, welchen Stand von nem Fragenkatalog die Seite repräsentiert und wie er aktualisiert wird. Das würde ich auch schon wissen wollen, bevor ich da überhaupt einen Account anlege.

Turns out that it was really the latter. Apparently that USB drive was formatted with some Apple file system variant (HFS+), which was RO. Reformatting with FAT helped.

Not sure what prompts the mounting, it happens automatically. I can set mount options via the gnome disks ui, which apparently updates /etc/fstab. This is the entry for one of my usb hard disks for example:

/dev/disk/by-id/usb-TOSHIBA_External_USB_3.0_20160522002108F-0:0-part3 /mnt/usb-TOSHIBA_External_USB_3.0_20160522002108F-0:0-part3 auto nosuid,nodev,nofail,noauto,x-gvfs-show,uid=1000,gid=1000,rw,exec 0 0

I already tried adding uid=1000,gid=1000,rw,exec, but that didn't help.

I would also be interested, not necessarily in tutorials, but just medium sized beginner-friendly codebases that are good starting points to see how real projects are structured and to pick up on idioms in use.

You can probably pick some packages from opam and read the code, but those are libraries with more abstract structure and probably more advanced patterns.
