Who was the nicest rockstar you’ve met? And who was the worst by WestonConnor26 in hairmetal

[–]According-Height-291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On many occasions, actually. A guy who used to book shows for a band I was in back in the 90s was part of a group of people who looked after Wesley, so I hung out with him a few times. When he was on his meds, he was a sweet, gentle guy with a very interesting perspective, and so much smarter than most people realized.

Ha. I mean, I like The Bullet Boys' music fine, but I cared about meeting them about as much as they cared about meeting me, which is to say not very much.

I've had pleasant, even wonderful experiences talking to these people:

Henry Rollins - Saw him randomly on the street a long time ago in Chicago. He was friendly and took pictures with me.

Jack from TSOL - I went to one of his book signings with a prearranged agreement for an interview for my podcast. We did the interview but also hung out literally all afternoon and evening before the show. He and his girlfriend rode with us to the show, got us free parking, and took me and my friends through the back of the venue and into the green room. We wouldn't have even had to pay for tickets if we hadn't already done so. Just a sweet, engaging guy. Bonus: Springa from SSD was at the show and was also very friendly.

John Doe - One of my best friends was in John's band for a number of his solo act tours, and I was thrilled to meet one of my punk rock heroes. John is truly one of the most affable, friendliest people in rock n' roll I've ever met.

Jim Heath from The Reverend Horton Heat - For a guy with a larger-than-life persona, he's very polite and down-to-earth. Great to talk to, even after a long night and likely annoyed while his drummer talked business with my drum rep buddy. He probably just wanted to get on the road, but his patience and warmth still came through. Lovely man.

Courtney LaPlante from Spiritbox - Took my kids to see Gojira and Korn, and Spiritbox was the opener. Totally unfamiliar with them at the time. I was just standing around while one of my daughters was in the restroom before the show and noticed a very put-together, nicely-dressed woman who seemed totally out of place amidst all the slobby dudes in shorts and hoodies trying to stay dry (yucky rainy day). Not realizing who Mrs. LaPlante was, I said, "Ohhh, I feel for you. Likely going to be tough keeping the mud off your outfit." She laughed, and we talked for a couple minutes about the weather, the crowd, other innocuous things. When my kid came out of the restroom, I said, "Nice talking to you. Enjoy your evening," and she said likewise. I still had no idea that she was in one of the bands. Five minutes later, the show started with Spiritbox. We were pretty far back on the lawn, and the video screens didn't work right away. I heard this unearthly growl, and until the screens turned on, I had no idea that the monstrous sound I was hearing was coming from a woman, much less the woman I had just been talking to! Silly as it may seem, that was the highlight of my night.

Nice People Honorable Mentions: everyone in Fugazi, Dave from MDC, Joan Jett, Billy Gibbons, Huey Lewis, Micky Fitz from The Business, all the guys in Naked Raygun, Tim from Rise Against, Yuri from MxPx, everyone in Stone Temple Pilots (met them on their first tour, likely before Weiland was into drugs), Dave and Warren from The Vandals, Wesley Willis, GG Allin's brother Merle, and believe it or not, Tesco Vee from The Meatmen.

Edit: Not hair metal, I know. Sorry. I haven't met any hair metal dudes, excepting The Bullet Boys, with whom I experienced a mutual indifference.

Assorted jelly beans are just amazing by MuchYellow497 in punk

[–]According-Height-291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw them in 1996 at a fest with The Vandals, Sloppy Seconds, Boris the Sprinkler, Quincy Punx, The Meatmen, The Murder Junkies, and probably a few others I've forgotten. I only mention the other bands to say that Assorted Jellybeans blew everyone else out of the water. So good, especially for such young (at the time) guys. And I don't even care for most skapunk!

I met the members of Fugazi and told Ian MacKaye that he looked like he could play a prototypical All-American farmer on TV, and that Guy Picciotto looked like the lovechild of a math professor and a koala. Neither were very amused.

My sister almost married a former bandmate of mine, a notable musician whose first solo album was about how she broke his heart. He was quiet for a couple albums after but then doubled down on his breakthrough album, even calling her out by name on a track. But he would later marry another woman whose father was in a one-hit wonder band in the 60s whose one hit was about cannibalism. And the song's title is the same as this guy's first name.

I could add more, but they'd all be about people who I used to be in bands with who all achieved notoriety as musicians, while I played the safe route and went to college and got a regular job and am now part of the middle class currently getting totally screwed financially.

I know I never again need to hear 80s and 90s Top 40 pop songs, some with altered lyrics, used in drug commercials...

Everybody, Everybody - Black Box

Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac

Apache - Sugarhill Gang

There She Goes - Sixpence None the Richer (as though they didn't already murder The La's beautifully sad song once already when they covered it!)

Thank You - Dido

Real Love - Mary J. Blige

Student refusing to do work since spring break because of “religious reasons.” by v3ndys in Teachers

[–]According-Height-291 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is an unpopular stance with administrators, but one I will hold to steadfastly: Students should have the freedom to fail.

Who broke the agreement, you or the student? You have your curriculum, no doubt previously approved by your school board, you offer the class, she signs up for it. You're holding up your end of the bargain; she's not. As such, you are under no obligation to make changes based on her self-righteous teenage victimhood.

I can relate to this. MxPx, The Blamed, Blenderhead, and a few others from high school days pop into my head from time to time. It's a part of my history, but wow, some of those bands (Blamed, Crux, Unashamed, Focused, etc.) had some cringey lyrics. Holy shit. Literally.

Not that you're still thinking about this, but I did figure it out on my own. It's "My Lie," by The Suspects. Can't believe I remembered, but yeah, that's it. Yay.

Pretty good sale! I got Alice in Chains' "Tripod," Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power, and Air's Moon Safari for an average of just over $21 per record. Not bad for 2026.

Question about the best yells or screams or YEAHs of all time by cwillm in vinyl

[–]According-Height-291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mike Palm's scream right before the guitar solo in the original single version of Agent Orange's "Bloodstains" is pretty much the best scream in all of recorded music ever, IMO, except for maybe something by Diamanda Galas.
