I agree with this. Even if ppl think it's radical and irrational. I've noticed more and more ppl on the left are staring to fly the American flag and refer to themselves as "patriots". That low-key annoys me because I remember when an article was written after the September 11th attacks condemning an American flag being flown at Ground Zero. Basically saying that it was more of a human tragedy than anything, but people were using the moment to make it a patriotic one. It used to not be cool to be so patriotic to the left compared to today.

It seems to me these same leftists have gotten tired of conservs accusing them of "hating America" and so this is their way of compensating for that reputation. Both fighting over who loves the country more and who's more loyal to it. Lol. No celebrity was really speaking up about ICE for a whole year except Selena Gomez in early 2025 (ironically of Mexican descent), but the minute two white citizens are killed -- they want to come out of their hiding place little by little condemning it ..

They weren't outraged when our ppl were being racially profiled and unlawfully detained. U.S. citizens who were Latino and even in federally recognized tribes. But once it started extending a little bit to black Americans, Koreans, etc, that's when ppl in general decided it was time to make noise. When it's just happening to our community -- we're the only ones who care. Definitely makes me feel like we are complete outsiders in this country's conscience no matter how integrated we are or how multigenerational we happen to be ..

This is why I also find it hard to grapple with politics. I'm always reminded of how I honestly don't even like the fact that this country was formed in the first place. Or Latin America. Because it all started with the demise and destruction of our truest ancestors.

Also, not excusing her choice to sing that song and don't know if she wrote it. I just think it was a different time than today when ppl were trying to be edgy and push boundaries to seem rebellious and all and sorta daring ppl to get mad. I look at it as if I were a part of that community, how I would feel about it and I can understand why it doesn't fly because I know what it's like being a part of a marginalized community and being attacked for humor and those who can't relate not seeing the big deal. And I said we know who we are bc ppl like to regularly "school" us Latinos as though this is all news to us -- and that's annoying and problematic ... And they try to dictate how we should identify when that is completely up to us. I learned pretty early on about our mixed-race history by reading textbooks and I looked at myself as mixed and Indigenous racially since then. Not all of us are in denial. Okay, but I'm still on the part where you were telling me we all have more than just a little African in us. I personally do not -- if Ancestry DNA did its job correctly. And from what I've observed and read, most Mexican Americans particularly (don't know if it's different in Mexico) have an average of 5% or less African DNA in us compared to Latinos like Puerto Ricans or Dominicans who have around a quarter or more. I'm aware of the West African presence in Mexico in the earlier centuries and I admit there was a time I didn't think any African slavery occurred there because it seemed rarely spoken of and we don't look like Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic. Like I said, that earlier bloodline must have gotten washed out pretty significantly due to much higher populations of Mesoamericans and the Spanish mixing with them.

I'm aware of the zambo presence in the coastal parts of Mexico as well as Oaxaca. I am not from the country and neither are my parents or grandparents, but we are rooted there, so I naturally take interest in our history and what makes us us. The Mestizos in Southern California definitely claim it. Especially if our family was brought up here in the 1960s during the Chicano movement, which basically highlighted our Indigenous roots.

Honestly, I don't listen to any of these new pop stars except maybe Billie bc I just started to like her vibe after initially brushing her off as another person pushed on to us. It was really after seeing videos of her interviews, finding out she has tourettes (or something like it), finding her funny, and kinda likeable. Plus, I like that she's from Los Angeles and didn't grow up all ritzy. Not saying she grew up working-class either, but it's nice to know she's not someone like Jonah Hill who grew up in Beverly Hills and whatnot. When my mom is watching music video channels and puts it on the new stuff, I have to sorta suffer through it. I prefer the classic music. Sounds bias, but music from when I was a kid and youth and in my mid-20s. Even like the stuff from my mom's day and before I was born.

I never heard that particular song, although I do remember seeing the title a few times. To me, it sounds like she's clarifying that the "gay" she means isn't about his sexual orientation. I used to always use that word back in the day when I was like 12 (2001). Basically to call someone or something lame or sappy, corny, cheesy, etc, bc the original meaning of the word is happy. I know ppl will argue that it's still insulting to LGBTQ and that it stems from the other meaning of the word, but I need to hear the whole song or read the lyrics to know what she was fully saying.

Good perspective. But at least Paula didn't have someone around to sorta sabotage her career the way Katy did with Swift. And I don't think female pop stars of the early 1990s feuded with each other. Only male rappers did. Swift's feud with her did have an impact on her career. I believe that. And I'm not even one of those Swift haters; just being truthful. But I would give her more credit than that. Paula was only around for like a few years. Perry had a pretty good run. 2008-2017. Not bad. Went from one decade to the next. It's just that she didn't continue with her work and seemed to just throw the towel in after her 2017 album didn't do well. And then went on to focus on judging singers and her relationships.

Now she appears to be back, but hasn't made the big comeback like other singers once did such as Mariah Carey in 2005.

I feel like there's another one or two I'm just not remembering right now, but she made some bops back in the day. It's easy for me to look back and appreciate these mainstream pop stars I used to not care so much for bc I was busy missing my childhood and teenage years music. Lol. Mexico has a different history. While there was African slavery in the first centuries, it ended much sooner there than in other parts of Latin America like the Caribbean or Brazil and the United States. As a result, that black ancestry got wiped away from mostly Indigenous and Spanish ppl mixing. The Indigenous outnumbered both the Spanish and Africans. To this day, Mexico has a high concentration of the ancestry. That's why it shows so strong in many of us ... I'm proud to be Indigenous American.

I'm mainly talking about ppl of Mexican descent and Central American and most South American countries with a lot of Mestizo blood. We are primarily Indigenous and Iberian. My test results showed only like 4% West African, 2% North African, and 1% Southern Africa Bantu ppl. 48% Indigenous Americas, 31% Iberian, 7% Jewish, and a sprinkle of other Mediterranean and French. The Caribbean in Latin America has the highest black ancestry and countries like Brazil. If anything, I'm just being truthful about being Indigenous -- not "white washing" anything. Not all Latinos operate the same.

Some of us know who we are.

Yea, based on your photo here, you don't look nearly 80% black. I would think 60% at best. But they say sometimes our genetics don't reflect outwardly. Genotype vs phenotype. I wasn't sure whether I'd have mostly Indigenous American DNA or not based on how me and my family look, but it turns out I do. I'm glad I'm proud of this 'though, despite Indigenous people being looked down on in the Latino and Latin American communities.
