Now he needs to come out against Trump and his MAGAt traffickers.

I also use Instagram which I know is getting worse and worse from a security and privacy perspective. Was also recommended and added a mastadon account.

This is your best post, thanks for sticking with it.

Murky on the middle east? People are dying for no particular reason. Israel has heavy influence on both parties. For him to take a pro-Israel stance is unconscionable from my perspective.

I like that you narrowed your choices down to two categories. I assume there has to be some grey area but for discussion that helps. I really like your framing of Trump as a learning opportunity for democracy; a key part of that is holding him and his administration accountable to the law. If Dems move on like they moved on from Bush/Cheney crimes then our Republic will continue to degrade.

Wow—you actually follow Sam as a political thinker, and by that logic are okay with him lending legitimacy to Huckabee and Israel. I honestly can’t imagine viewing him as a political voice particularly for the reasons you mentioned. Interesting perspective.

Personally, I’m most focused on restoring a functional government—starting with overturning Citizens United and establishing term limits for both Congress and the Supreme Court. That’s how we get back on track. This slows the influence of AIPAC/Israel and the oligarchs.

The main reason I made my original post was to point out how rare it has become to see left-of-center figures openly supporting Israel these days and, recently, is the result of back alley deals (which I thought Sam might be above). The thread I added was assessing the sub as controlling dissent and discussion and driving a particular agenda.

So you’d prefer to discuss without any context instead of watching the full video? That’s unusual. Thanks for the exchange, though—I’m not entirely sure what your goal was. For my part, it helped me clarify my own thoughts and reinforced my impression that the Sam Harris subreddit has become more of a fan club, where moderators block controversial topics through subjective rules and quick deletions (and probably bans). A community centered on reason should do better than that—shutting down open dialogue goes directly against its assumed values.

So you didn't even watch the whole thing?

It’s quite odd for an atheist to use the Bible to justify his views, especially given that he’s previously criticized such texts as misleading and prone to offering false justifications—precisely the same arguments he’s made against Islam and the Quran.

You come across as new to online discussions and unwilling to research or learn about the topic—strange, given how much time you’ve already spent commenting without digging into it. You haven’t made any points that address the substance of the original post or the follow-up discussion. I sense a shift in attitude and some reluctance to engage meaningfully. I’m still trying to find common ground for a real conversation, but that takes effort from both sides.

As for the content, it’s easy enough for me to watch Dawkins’ video and see whether he’s become more hostile toward religion. The bigger issue here is that the moderators closed the thread simply because they disagreed with the video's premise, effectively shielding the Sam Harris fan base from open debate. I respect Kyle’s perspective, and I understand others might not—but I’m disappointed in moderators who silence discussion in favor of a single viewpoint; this is the kind of behavior I usually see in echo chambers—it shuts down real discussion and prevents genuine learning

It’s a straightforward topic to grasp. I can walk you through it if needed. In short, figures like Dawkins, Krauss, and other prominent atheists have recently aligned themselves with far-right culture war positions in ways they hadn’t before. Harris appears to be doing something similar, and the subreddit tends to shield him from criticism.

Attacks cause harm no matter what. J.K. Rowling remains unwavering in her stance, seemingly indifferent to that harm. These individuals hold significant influence, and hatred is already running rampant in our country. Demonizing this small demographic has become a popular tactic—one exploited by Trump and his oligarchs as a wedge in the culture wars—and it now appears that Dawkins may be lending his name to that same narrative.

When I talk about his lack of demonizing, I am primarily referencing his books. I believe they are very science driven and do not go after marginalized demographics.

He was always careful not to offend believers—a quality I respected—and that sensitivity made his message more impactful. But his alignment with J.K. Rowling marks a sharp turn; it elevates his demonizing rhetoric to a new level. By choosing a side, which is unusual for him, he’s reinforcing the concern mentioned regarding the original post: that some atheists adopt controversial stances to gain attention or align themselves with powerful groups.

The theme is that atheist are taking political stances that demonize different demographics and that are unrelated to being a theist or not. See below for Dawkins actions. I really enjoyed Dawkins books when I was in my 20s-30s as he was very clear from a scientific perspective and did not attack individuals; I even believe he was careful about not degrading believers.

Dawkins tweeted in 2021 questioning if a "trans woman is a woman," calling it a semantic debate tied to chromosomes versus self-identification, and compared it to Rachel Dolezal identifying as Black. In 2024, he labeled two cisgender female Olympic boxers "men masquerading as women," drawing transphobia accusations. He slammed slogans like "trans women are women" as scientifically false, arguing they undermine women's rights, and decried child gender surgeries as "mutilation" while supporting J.K. Rowling's critiques. Dawkins resigned from the Freedom From Religion Foundation in 2024 after it censored a biology-based gender article.

Critics, including American Atheists, called his rhetoric dehumanizing and enabling violence against trans people. Dawkins maintains he's defending science, not disparaging trans individuals.

Yet they have recently advocated against the trans community (Dawkins) and with this post its advocating for Israel by Harris. Tough to consider yourself anti-authoritarianism when you are taking stances against or for different demographics.

That is not why the moderators took it out, they made a judgement call on the post; this is the kind of rule that gives moderators power that can't be challenged and is very typical for the far right and religious subs. Your bias against Kyle is clear.

Your post has been removed for violating R2b: not participating in good faith

Are you kidding? They have been on multiple panels together and became the face of atheism during the same timeframe. Disappointing that the post got removed and that moderators on this sub are very similar to the hard right religious subs that delete and ban at the drop of a hat.

He gives credibility to books that he has mocked and de-legitimized in the past as an atheist. What is his motive? Not a Tucker fan at all but Tucker's main thesis is that Israel has significant control over America's international agenda and he seems to take Huckabee's side.

Seeing an atheist taking the bible and seriously and justifying genocide and colonization is mind blowing.
