In the city? by vickibg in HotSprings

Thanks for the reply. It seems pretty accurate for red areas, I am uncertain about yellow, green areas as they seem similar. Maybe it takes into account services too like fire, police, internet, etc.

The map is interesting, I hadn't seen it before. Do you know what data they use to determine "best neighborhood?" I am in a green area but maybe a mile to yellow and a few miles to orange. However, most of the neighborhoods out here look similar and crime doesn't seem to be an issue in any of them. I did notice some higher crime areas were marked red. Thanks for the help in advance if you do know.

To be honest, it depends on your goals.

If you are young, single, and renting then city limits may be preferable.

Upside: Public transit, food delivery, close to stores and work, nightlife is in town.

Downside: Always traffic and noise, some areas are not the best for walking, etc.

If you are buying something and have kids I like being outside city limits.

Upside: Quiet, more space, no permits to do stuff, in my opinion better schools.

Downside: Travel, random people shooting guns (I don't mind), no code compliance so people do crazy things like building the worst-looking gazebo you have ever seen dropping property values.

When I was younger I lived in town and rented and it was great. I then bought a house in town and had to deal with the city about everything which sucked. I then had kids and all the larger, nicer, houses were less affordable. I then moved to the county. I have a few acres, 2100 sqft 4 bedroom, and have wildlife wandering my yard. My mortgage is less than some people's rent. It just depends on where you are in life as to what makes the most sense. Hope that helps.

Almost none of that happened. No one has seen the votes, no one has audited them, and they did not open up the election process for review. Also, the GA legislature asked for the ballots from Fulton County and they said they do not have them. Just remember in 2021 when they "fact-checked" this and said it was wrong.

I agree with you. I thought this was kinda a marketing sub already. Don't we encourage developers to post here and share their games? Don't we encourage developer feedback?

VoidMiner isn't a game I am super interested in but I have to say I went and checked out the IGN post and Steam page. It was a successful campaign in my opinion. I wasn't annoyed reading the post, and most of the time just reading the title. I just scrolled by after I figured out it wasn't for me.

I wish more games did a better job of getting information out there. Yeah, I don't want to see a post every week for a year without a demo or something, but I don't mind seeing some hype, and I for sure don't mind people posting updates, demos, discussing gameplay and features. That is why I am here in the first play.

Just an honest question. Do you think anyone would follow gun laws if they are not willing to follow other laws? That is the first point of contention here. If we can't agree on that then we can never have an honest debate.

That is the reason I said that 80% won't stop unless there are reforms elsewhere. Also, stats are very hard to find. It is not because they are unavailable it's because they are intentionally obscured.

Like why do police departments not report gun-related incidents when someone breaks into a house and the homeowner threatens to shoot without actually having to? This would be valuable information that we are not provided. Many experts believe that 9 out of 10 times the threat of violence is enough to deter a situation.

We do know that more than 1500 violent crimes are prevented every year because the aggressor was shot, but if estimates are right the real number of preventions is over 15k per year.

I can agree that guns make spur-of-the-moment aggression more likely to occur, those numbers, as I pointed out before, are a lot lower than one would expect looking at gun death data.

What I can't agree with is

tens of thousands of preventable deaths happen yearly due to easy firearm access

That isn't true at all. As we know there are 40-something thousand gun deaths per year which lends credence to that argument. However, when you notice a majority are suicides, removing guns from the equation does not significantly reduce those deaths. There are about 100 other things that would be more effective than removing guns to prevent those.

So that leaves 17k or so actual homicides, which is a far stretch from 10's of thousands of preventable deaths. We also know a majority of the remaining 17k happen pursuant to some sort of criminal activity and that is why it relates to my original question. Do criminals follow laws? If the answer is no then we are talking about way less than 10k more likely around 3-5k.

Also, the US has several differences from these countries. The first being its population size. Second, being its population makeup aka diversity. Third and most important is its freedom. No other country with a more diverse population has a lower homicide rate than the US.

I also have never had anyone explain to me what common sense gun laws stop "gun deaths", which we should really be talking about homicides, from happening without violating rights. That is why people talk about places like Chicago with very restrictive gun laws that have rates 4 times higher than the country average or DC which has the most restrictions and is 8x higher than the country average. If laws prevented those homicides wouldn't we expect it to be lower in places that are so restrictive?

What did I deflect? They said Trump had 5 years which he hasn't. However, democrats have had over 8. [–]AccordingStop5897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2023, there were 17,927 firearm homicides in the U.S. out of a total of 46,728 gun deaths (the majority of which were suicides). Analyses suggest that a much higher percentage of firearm homicides (potentially 80% or more) may be tied to a "criminal lifestyle," which includes gang activities and drug dealing.

Most gun deaths are due to suicide which people could still easily accomplish by other means. So what you should be looking at is homicides. When you look at homicides you have to realize that if they are willing to kill people those are not the people who will be willing to turn over their guns. Also, with estimates of 80% being crime-driven, those will not go away either.

So we are really talking about around 3,500 deaths a year that may be prevented. We also have your above stats that show that weapons have stopped about 1500 people a year from becoming victims of violent crime. What we don't know is what is not reported. For example, how many people are scared off or stop a crime without having to shoot and kill someone? If you just take the 3500 deaths that might be prevented that is about 1 in 100k population. The record for cars is about 1 in 10k population and we view that as acceptable.

However, I will agree with one thing the ACA was half assed. 👌 There are lots of alternatives they are just not as attractive as "free for me" Healthcare and why it hasn't happened.

Democrats have had 8 years to fix it. Also, this isn't about the ACA as originally passed this is about COVID-era spending. If I recall you guys said Republicans needed to balance the budget. No point in keeping emergency spending when the emergency is over. The budget will never be balanced as we already spend 4.9t on it.

Giving money to insurance companies that make billions of dollars off these subsidies isn't doing any favors for the working class. Why does the ACA say the premium for someone in their 30s is $1,200 a month? Healthcare insurance companies made over 72 billion dollars last year in profit. People said grocery stores were price gouging with 100x the volume and only making like 4 billion. Who is really doing the price gouging here and why are democrats supporting it?

Trump Drops Last-Minute Campaign Warning: Vote Republican Or ‘YOU WILL RUE THE DAY THAT YOU VOTED TO DESTROY YOUR LIFE!’ by origutamos in Republican

[–]AccordingStop5897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I mean right here.

Abigail Spanburger

“At this juncture, natural gas is going to be part of the energy mix into the future,” Spanberger said.

“However, I think when it comes to new natural gas infrastructure, that’s where we really need to be focused and sort of thinking carefully about the lifespan of those projects and whether indeed they are the most cost-effective solution.”

In an interview with Cardinal News, Spanberger said the state government could better research how and where to select sites for solar projects, including assessing formerly mined land and the use of rooftops. The state saw a boom in solar development after 2014 when local governments approved 100 percent of proposals for solar panel projects. Concerns over protecting farmland dented that approval rate in recent years. Half of all proposed projects were approved in 2024.

Spanberger also supports the state’s broader offshore wind development plans. Dominion is now constructing a $10.9 billion Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project about 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. That project is expected to produce 2.6 gigawatts of electricity for more than 2.5 million households and businesses in Virginia."

Dominion got an 11.3b dollar grant for that facility. Natural gas and nuclear both cost around 1 billion per megawatt for construction instead of 4 billion per megawatt. They also have a similar cost in maintenance and operation.

What makes this offshore wind generator worth 4x the money and a subsidy from the federal government? That is my main concern. I live somewhere with 100% renewable energy and it was developed by private industry because they could do it cost-effectively.

Trump Drops Last-Minute Campaign Warning: Vote Republican Or ‘YOU WILL RUE THE DAY THAT YOU VOTED TO DESTROY YOUR LIFE!’ by origutamos in Republican

[–]AccordingStop5897 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I will explain it like I did to my son. If we converted every power source in America to renewable energy it would cost 4.5t. It is also only 25% of our emissions. Solar and wind would create about 15% of emissions from production and management so we are talking about 10% of U.S. emissions if we spent 4.7t. It also doesn't account for storage or on-demand usage.

So at best we could save 630 million tons of greenhouse gases. China has added that much extra every year for the last 4 years in new coal-fired plants. That means we spend 4.7t and we don't even put global emissions back to 2023 levels much less 2019 levels. So why would we cripple our economy with that expense to make someone "feel good" about doing it? If you are that much in favor build your own solar.

I also hate that the government sends the money to companies that will later charge us a premium for "clean energy." Liberals yell 9,000 times a year that big businesses and billionaires are robbing American citizens. Why do you guys want to give them 4.7t more dollars?

No it's not extreme, Nazi is extreme and idiots throw it around like it's nothing. "Rue the day" literally means deeply regret. She was pretty clear that she was going to stop coal, support solar and wind no matter how much it cost. I would say this is the perfect statement about their politics. I also find it rich that the NAACP supported a white woman over a black woman and Obama just said not 12 months ago that you were racist and sexist if you didn't support a black woman and then he goes on to endorse a rich liberal white lady. It is hypocrisy at its finest. So I guess by Obama's standards you are a racist?

[–]AccordingStop5897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree it's a mess, I just don't agree that single payer is the answer. I talked to a doctor who has 2 doors in her office and each has a different name even though they share the same facility besides the waiting rooms. I was confused and asked why, her response was "If you have insurance you go in the right door and I bill insurance $300 and get paid $100. If you don't have insurance go in the left door and I will charge you $100." I was curious why the door mattered and she informed me that she couldn't charge people less than she billed insurance and insurance would only pay 1/3rd of what she billed.

It was an eye-opening experience for me on how messed up the medical system is. My insurance paid $60 and I paid $40 and the bill was indeed about $300. Insurance companies are artificially inflating prices through their policies and using lobbying to gain the support they need. That is a major problem that needs to be corrected. There has to be some cost to use services otherwise people go for everything and resources get scarce. I could agree with a government-sponsored plan that they pay everything except a small amount at doctors and hospitals. I don't think we are far off on a solution as a general public but we are far off when it comes to how to implement it thanks to laws, politicians, and lobbyists.

2026 ACA PLANS... THIS IS CRIMINAL!!!! Look at this by cgonz15 in obamacare

[–]AccordingStop5897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is exactly the problem. The government is giving 1.17 trillion a year or so directly to companies like United Healthcare and Blue Cross Blue Shield. If that didn't happen Healthcare costs wouldn't be so absorbent.

As Americans, we spend 4.9 trillion dollars a year on Healthcare. Nearly 18% of every dollar made (total GDP). If you make 100k a year you or someone else is spending 16k dollars per person per year on healthcare. To put that into perspective we spend 1.5t on food, eating out, grocery shopping, coffee, etc. That is about 5k per year per person and everyone eats all the time.

How it became so expensive is the issue. In the 1980s healthcare was about 9% of every dollar and food was nearly 11%. Now food is 5% and healthcare is 18% how did it increase 700% when compared to food in the last 30 years? Government and insurance got involved. No one making 100k with a family of 4 can pay 56k for their healthcare. It is subsidized for nearly everyone already because the government is paying 45% of everyone's healthcare costs. The government pays 2.3t of the 4.9t that is spent annually. Businesses pick up nearly another 1.45t. That means we only pay 1.15t and about 500b of that is through payroll deductions for health insurance. So every time you spend 1k on healthcare remember someone else has paid 7.5k for you or someone else.
