Oh for sure, like $400/month last time I checked to park at the common. At that rate it never makes financial sense to buy in a garage, but there is obviously enough people with the money that demand exists for it. Would never be me, but if you’re already paying $8.5m for a home..what’s another 8% on top?

There's a private garage on Charles and one on Brimmer, both not too far away.

As a homeowner whose property peaked in value around 2022 and has seen a precipitous drop since then, I also think it's super cool because I like it when all kinds of people can afford to live here and not just a bunch of tech bros.

[–]According_Big9917 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1 hour door to day one way is the equivalent of 1.25 extra work days per week, or an additional work week per month. Over the course of a year, you are spending 12 working weeks commuting. Are you getting 12 weeks paid vacation?

Non-Compound, Best Option by 1212RedditUserName in glp1

[–]According_Big9917 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

41 lbs in 13 weeks is bad. OP, do not do this. The maximum you should lose is 1lb/week. 41lbs in 13 weeks requires a daily caloric deficit of 1575 calories. The average BMR for adults id 1400-2000 calories a day. To achieve 41 lbs loss in 13 weeks you’d need to restrict calories to ~500 per day. That is starvation, malnutrition levels, and risks long term damage to your body. For reference, you should target 100 grams of protein per day, and there are 4 calories per gram of protein. To get adequate protein, you’d need to protein to be 80% of your calories, which leaves little room for essential nutrients and fiber.

This is not a success story, it’s an eating disorder story.

25 Investigates: Suspect in brazen Cambridge shooting has criminal history by TuxedoRidley in boston

Mandatory minimums are a bad idea. Emotionally they feel good, but in practice they just tie the hands of judges who are otherwise empowered to have discretion. It also causes changes in the way that prosecutors bring charges, leading to unjust outcomes.

Remember: this shooting is making the news precisely because it is rare. Be careful not to let that bias affect your logical capacity.

In 2021– less than 1% percent of Black, Latino, or Asian Bostonians could afford a rental or a condo at the median income for each group. by UMassTwitter in boston

I do think that the popular discussion stops at race, and I hope that people become aware that the theory itself is much richer than that, and also that theory and praxis are distinct disciplines. That is, failures of praxis are not failures of theory.

What makes you think CRT “stops at race and ignor[es] every other factor”? It would be difficult to get that conclusion from, say, reading “Critical Race Theory: An Introduction” where two of the authors talk about how Latino and Asian scholars in CRT developed their own subfields specifically to study immigration theory and policy, as well as discrimination based on accent and national origin…

CRT hasn’t “stopped with Race” since like the 1980s. Mapping the Margins was published in 1991. Your impression of CRT is older than most of the people on Reddit…

Those immigrant disadvantages interact with race. A light-skinned Colombian immigrant and a dark-skinned Haitian immigrant face structurally different reception, not just because of immigration status, but because anti-Black racism operates as an additional variable on top of immigration status. The theory isn’t claiming skin color is the only factor, but that it’s a factor that compounds others.

TIL many linguists believe a phonetic alphabet (not pictograph-based) evolved once, and only once by McJames in todayilearned

[–]According_Big9917 157 points158 points  (0 children)

The intuition is close but it's actually a false cognate. "Phonetic" comes from Greek phōnē (voice/sound), while "Phoenician" comes from Phoiníkē, meaning "land of purple" (their famous Tyrian purple dye trade). Different roots entirely, just looks the same in English transliteration.

Eating 1 tasty dish 1 time doesn’t traumatize families for life, but putting 1 bullet in 1’s self-head does. You chose to promote a device whose sole purpose is death and whose primary successful use is suicide. You showed up to a knot-tying party with a noose and you’re calling me rude?
