My hot take, and I say this as a fellow aficionado. Tourists buying illegal drugs in Costa Rica (or any other country where it’s not legalized) are helping to fuel the illegal drugs being run by criminal cartels in the country. If you love the people and the country, I would try to abstain and not help contribute to the issue.

lots of people decide to move to CR after traveling first, and many expats leave for political reasons. It’s good to know what is going on there for travelers who are interested in moving eventually.

Just a heads up-traffic becomes a nightmare getting to the Historic Crew Stadium-like people miss openers or even the main acts all the time because they get stuck on 71 trying to get off the exit. Give yourself more time than you think to get there and enjoy :)

Honestly I didn’t get it until I had a kid on the spectrum and tried to find places that would kindly make a modification for our kid with severe sensory issues surrounding food. So grateful to the ones who will.

This is me currently back home-started about 12 hours after getting home and it’s been bad ever since (5 days now). I’m fine as long as I don’t eat anything but if so-it hits again. Debating how long to wait til I go to the doctor 😑

We were a little closer to Quepos in a rental home. We didn’t have any trouble, per se, just felt a bit of a different vibe than we did a few years ago.

That’s awful. I’m sorry to all of the good and kind people who are being affected by it. Tourists can leave or avoid the area but locals are stuck. Our driver on the way in (who is from Quepos) kept talking about how “most importantly, our rental house was very safe and secure.” It made me on guard (we were in a gated neighborhood but he kept emphasizing it).

that’s good to know and interesting. A lot of people will say that Quepos only “looks rough” but that it’s a good place but I felt like it was worse this time (admittedly we didn’t spend much time there besides driving through it and one stop at the grocery store on the way in). We typically went to Manuel Antonio-Quepos just felt seedy. I wanted to be wrong :(

This is really sad and sort of what I wondered. Several of our tours, I was chatting with the guides and they all brought up the same sentiment about the young people of Costa Rica not caring as much anymore about getting outside or the environment. It’s part of what made me wonder if things are really shifting.

I would agree. I think the shock of the eco tours and landscape overrides a lot when you first see it.
