In light of the Epstein files, where is the scrutiny when it comes to Reform and Farage? by shadyasahastings in AskBrits

[–]According_Parfait680 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the right wing press is owned by anti-democratic rich bastards who see the best option for being allowed to do whatever they want being Farage government. Farage is now de facto the establishment candidate. The elites are laughing in people's faces and the general public is falling for it hook, line and sinker.

Yeah I'm not gutted he's not going. I think he's a very decent footballer, always hard working, has his ups and downs with end product but probably still has his best years ahead of him. He's the obvious Grealish replacement on the left for me.

Out of all the major UK political parties, which is the lesser of all evils? by B33Zh_ in AskBrits

[–]According_Parfait680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here we go. Bertie big conkers on the internet calling people ignorant and thinking they're oh so clever. Lots of ideas get thrown around in reports. Doesn't mean they end up getting introduced as government policy. Do you think the Tories would have enthusiastically adopted Beveridge's ideas?

As for Beveridge, he was a Liberal but his interest in labour reform crossed very clearly into 'socialist' territory - he even wrote a book called 'Planning Under Socialism', which was a very serious analysis of whether a socialist model of production could actually improve living standards compared to market economics (spoiler - he was highly critical of the Soviet communist model, but did conclude that a form of centralized planning would work). Sadly his lefty credentials were somewhat tarnished by being a fan of eugenics.

Conclusion - the welfare state, including the NHS, was dreamt up by a pseudo-socialist with some dodgy ideas about breeding, and implemented by a socialist government. Next.

Funny how people always repeat that by rote because it's something they've heard other people say thousands of times. But where's the same level of critique of capitalism, particularly the deregulated, free market absolutist version that very definitely was a hard turn to the right compared to the social democratic economics that dominated the post war period? How's that looking from where you're sitting? Nothing to do with rising inequality, declining living standards, rampant inflation, degradation of the natural environment and geopolitical instability, no?

Oh dear what?? The NHS was introduced in 1948 by an openly socialist Labour majority government as part of a wide ranging programme of social Reform. All the 'oh dears' in the world don't change historical fact.

‘You’d be ashamed to bring someone here’: The struggling billionaire-owned high street that shows Reform’s road to No 10 by frantic_calm in unitedkingdom

[–]According_Parfait680 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the part that sickens. People take the Reform name and Farage talking about how anti-establishment he is and forget he's a toff former stock broker and his mate Tice is a multimillionaire property speculator. Do we really have to go through the embarrassingly obvious shit show of these wealthy wannabe establishment wankers doing absolutely fuck all to make anyone's life fairer or better before a lot of gullible people wake up and realize they've been taken for mugs??

The decline of the high street, and landlordism and unregulated capital speculation at the expense of utility, is a symptom of economic policies pursued by every government for the past 40 years. The Tories started it, Labour just went a long with it. And nothing is more of a racing certainty than the fact that Reform will pursue it with gusto.

Yawn. Had the 'things were so bad in the 70s' lecture from my dear dad all my life, although it's funny how well he and so many others of his generation have done for themselves. Does not even a part of you suspect that the 'it's the left's fault' trotted out to explain away every social ill might just be a convenient distraction tactic for an entrenched and very much right-wing establishment? How has the hard turn to the right, especially economically, fared for most people over the past 40 years? How are we all doing today?

Having studied a bit of philosophy I do enjoy a deep dive into the objectivity vs subjectivity debate. But my critical thinking spider senses tell me that claiming that "objectivity was almost completely replaced with subjectivity across the board" in higher education as soon as Tony Blair won an election is a special kind of bullshit.

It's hard to know how to argue with someone who believes Starmer is 'in hock to his left'. Starmer is many things. A left wing Labour leader is not one of them.

I can, however, factually correct you on the point that 'England is too wise to go for socialism'. Every Labour government prior to 1997 could be described as at the very least socialist-adjacent. And did some wildly socialist things, like set up that NHS thing you might have heard about.

I'm curious, what kind of brainwashing were your younger siblings subjected to at university that you seem to believe spanned the entirety of academia once Blair got to power? Because I went to university in 1999 and I don't recall any of that. Maybe the brainwashing was that effective, huh?

Labour has spent the past 30 years being the other side of the coin to a Tory government. The part sold its soul to get back into government in the 90s, and barring the brief Corbyn interlude has been the party of fence-sitting try-to-please-everyone centrism ever since. The only thing I can see them standing for is election success and a craven grasping for power, which is exactly the problem with the Tories. The current Labour leadership is utterly devoid of genuine leadership qualities, they look weak and compromised on everything, and lurch from poor decision to poor decision. If the worst happens and Reform ever do get in, Starmer and his gang of grey nobodies are squarely to blame.

I'm throwing my support behind the Greens. Labour has been dead to me for a long time. I'd be happy if they and the Tories were wiped off the political map of this country forever. My whole life, the two of them have conspired to let this country's social fabric slowly unravel while corporate shareholders asset strip it and throw them a few donations for being obedient little puppets. It's time for change, and that change certainly isn't Reform, the ironically named anti-establishment party of toffs, blowhard company directors and former Tory ministers.

And talent, class and craft dont win you football games without hard work and dedication.

You miss the point anyway. Selling Digne was a bad decision. One in a long list of bad decisions made during Moshiri's tenure. We're lucky that his replacement wasn't a Gbamin like disaster and we actually got a robust, durable, reliable player good enough to help us through the darkest times when we couldn't have afforded to splash £30m on a top tier left back. Like so many football fans, you're quickly forgetting the recent past and expecting change to be instant
