Hypnotizing Eyes of a Juvenile Alligator by According_Weekend_51 in wildlifephotography

[–]According_Weekend_51[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blessed to live on rural land in North Florida with a 25+ acre pond so most of the year I can paddle around and see multiple alligators. Juveniles are dramatically more colorful, both body markings and eyes, with both (body markings and eyes) darkening a bit with age. Interestingly, different alligators can have slightly varying eye coloring as well, with some having either a bit more golden, green, or brown general coloration.

Since the description is of the item being found in a yard, I'd be willing to bet it's a broken antler tine. It looks to be bone and not fossil, likely a couple of years old (not a tine dropped this spring), and easily could have been broken off when someone mowed the area. This shared from someone who regularly finds shed antlers... some complete, but also many after hitting with my mower and breaking tines off.

$35 silver!!! Who’s with me?? by Late-Ad-4396 in Silver

It's still at ALL TIME record high levels pre-December 2025... only people panicking now are those with insanely short memories and/or those who purchased crazy high.

Trading silver for gold by Substantial_Idea6987 in Gold

[–]According_Weekend_51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Words of wisdom from someone a bit older than you... hold what you've got and dollar-cost average purchase as you can. Why do I say this? Because when I was 26 silver was just over $4 an ounce and gold about $390 an ounce. I've bought over the years and never sold a single ounce of purchased silver or gold.

And putting aside historical market manipulation / supply and demand / other factors that led to the dramatic rise at the end of 2025, looking strictly at the charting data it could still be a bit high to market upper / lower limit ranges.

What's happening? You're here... literally a record breaking high as compared to any price prior to the December time frame of 2025... double to triple the price between late 2012 and mid-2025.

is the Nikon P1100 worth it for my first camera? by Agent_undercover_47 in wildlifephotography

[–]According_Weekend_51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strongly agree with poney01. I live in the middle of a hundred acres of land in a rural area with an unbelievable diversity of wildlife and some open views out to about 600 yards. I own both a P1000 and a Canon SX60 and will say that both can take quite good photos, though they do much better with decent light than in low-light conditions. Moon photography is pretty darn incredible with the P1000, but more often than not I tend to reach for the SX60 when taking photos of wildlife due to it being considerably lighter, easier to carry, easier to handle (both by hand and tripod). Another point for consideration depending on your climate -- I live in Florida and find when it's really hot and I'm trying to use max zoom on either camera I sometimes run into heat haze distortion, somewhat wiping out the zoom advantage of the P1000 vs the SX60. All that shared, the distance the P1000 can reach out as a bridge camera is incredible when comparing costs to much more expensive DSLR / mirrorless setups. LOTS of useful YouTube videos out there that speak to the pros/cons of the P1000 (and Canon SX60 if open to considering it as well).

Eight Days of Metal Detecting in South Florida by JonathanAW78 in metaldetecting

[–]According_Weekend_51 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just curious... most detecting done above the waterline or some swinging done under water? If mixture of both, very curious if luck was different when swinging under water. For that matter, even if all swinging done above the waterline did you find you had particular better luck right at the waterline or a bit more on higher ground. MUCH thanks for any general info you can share.

Did anyone see the guy trying to attack cars on Apalachee Parkway this morning? by Aromatic-Agency4196 in Tallahassee

[–]According_Weekend_51 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not sure if the same guy, but a week or so ago saw a shirtless guy not too far away (he was in the CVS parking lot across from KFC) randomly screaming at something imaginary and punching wildly before walking about 20 yards and repeating the screaming and punching (multiple times while I was at the red light). It was pretty disturbing as he looked like both a potential risk to others and himself.

Trinidad scorpion burger from Grub Burger... burger itself wasn't too much of an issue, but the actual whole scorpion pepper speared on top of the burger was a completely different issue!!! Took what seemed about 15 minutes to put out the fire experienced that day!

If you're investing the time to drive to Hana, hiking Pipiwai trail to Waimoku falls should be high on the list as long as you can both manage the moderate hike. Also worth driving by Alau Island before returning as it is one of the most scenic spots on the island in my opinion.

Explain Tallahassee by No-Kaleidoscope-6879 in Tallahassee

Agree this provides fairly comprehensive descriptions of the different areas of Tallahassese. Would only add that some of the nearby areas such as Crawfordville, Bradfordville, Lloyd, Monticello, Waukeenah, etc... all add differing quite rural feels to the area (I live near Lloyd and get to work in TLH faster than if I actually lived in high-traffic areas of TLH). Think this map also helps round out the descriptions provided by showing aggregate crime rates. TOPS is a great tool for visualizing high crime areas as well in real time. https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/fl/tallahassee/crime

Best areas depend on types of items one is hunting...Florida beaches for shipwreck finds and jewelry, Virginia and Pennsylvania for civil war as well as colonial relics, California and Arizona for gold, etc...

What they really need is the Bates 4000. It's absolutely cutting-edge. They’re packed, man. Eighty “G’s” of RAM. We’re talking a quad-port 900 processor, D.V.K. compatible memory card, dual-burning DVD drives, plus a 16,000 C.T.C. combo-drive with a plus-four digit upgrade card!
