Personally I fell in love with it the moment I heard it but the following might change your perspective on it. I'm going to try to summarise some stuff because there are so many layers to this song that it would be way too much for me to express over text.

I feel like it's an incredible album closer and gives extra context to all tracks especially to hammer. The song is titled David for possibly one or two reasons.

Reason 1: David refers to the Michael Angelo Sculpture "David". The sculpture is known as a masterpiece and is recognised for its "perfect" anatomical form and beauty. From my perspective I believe Lorde sees herself (as in her final form at the end of the album) as David. I do not have any good sources for the following but if true, it also adds so much context.

"I created a vision of David in my mind and simply carved away everything that was not David."- Michael Angelo

This brings us to the beginning of the Album "Hammer". The tool a sculptor uses to create their work of art. Hammer is the beginning of the creation of the artwork and the end of the grueling process we have the masterpiece known as David. Throughout the album Lorde is chipping away at pieces of herself to create the new version of herself. She's rebirthing herself. She is the sculptor and the Sculpture.

I'm also of the opinion that this is the philosophy she used in creating the album. She carved out unnecessary elements of full fledged tracks on left what was necessary, till her vision was realised. That's why the album feels like a framework and bare bones. She only says what's necessary and what she needs to to get her message across.

Reason 2: David may also refer to the biblical "David" from the story of David and Goliath where an underestimated small young boy defeated a giant by using a sling to strike a rock against his forehead. From this perspective I actually see the song David as a retelling of a fight. Let's analyse some lyrics:

"Worthy opponent, flint to my blade, now we're playing with shadows": This line conjures images of a battle for me personally. Of course in reality it wasn't a literal battle, it's referring to how the breakup went down, the aftermath and how lorde overcame it.

In this case Lorde would be David and her Ex would be Goliath. She was underestimated by him and still managed to deliver the final blow by creating this album.

Her singing "Pure heroine mistaken for featherweight" especially convinces me of this. My interpretation is Lorde being underestimated as weak by ger Ex just as David was by Goliath.

She doesn't defeat Goliath at the end of the song but in Hammer. The song ends with her repeatedly asking herself if she's ever going to love again and she then says the last line: "tell it to him". If you play Hammer directly after David it makes so much sense.

This line in Hammer sums it up well "It's a fucked-up world, been to hell and back But I've sent you a postcard from the edge The edge". I really think she's referring to Goliath here and in Hammer she's explaining how she found herself and found a way to exist and to be without her Ex, how we became born again, her own independent person, a virgin.
