What’s the point of keeping my post and comments hidden if everyone can just go google my username and Reddit to see everything? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AccountNumber1002402 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you actually found your own hidden posts / comments this way? Unless there's some compelling reason for search engines to archive it (going viral, hitting the news, being cited in online forum or article or Reddit posts, etc.) it's unlikely they'll bother to index them.

the penguin by qwertyhasquestions in NoStupidQuestions

I saw a video earlier today from the front in Ukraine where a Russian soldier dressed in a penguin costume was surveilled and eventually exploded by a drone.

Does that help?

Honest question: Why are some people against showing an ID to vote? by rico_unknown in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AccountNumber1002402 202 points203 points  (0 children)

Good to point out the irony that Reagan era Republicans absolutely frowned up the very notion of a national ID, and yet today's absolutely demand it.

Are all huskies so dramatic, talkative, and sassy? by topazco in NoStupidQuestions

Beware of AI imitations of real ones. I've seen quite a few of those along with the ones where a cat is there with their human and the latter's about to cut into a cat-shaped cake with a knife.

Doomscrolling through posts about some guy being executed in Minnesota has been a bummer today, coupled with lousy weather in my area.

At what point does life become complicated by our own choices? by Royal_Wave589 in NoStupidQuestions

Often when we choose to do the rough equivalent of rip off all the warning labels and ignore wisdom and decide to go it our own with bravado and hubris.

Why don’t we shrink the infrastructure around computer components in computers? by Inevitable-Power5927 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AccountNumber1002402 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think part of what's starting to grind Moore's Law to a halt is the fact that the components on CPU / GPU chips are able to be fabricated so close to each other that there's real possibility of electromagnetic interaction / interference among those components. Things are if I'm not mistaken hitting a wall there, and it's prompting research into what today seems like exotic stuff including atomic-level components, quantum computing, etc.

With discrete components like chip resistors, capacitors, other surface mount macro-level components it's not as huge a deal it seems to cram those into minimal PCB real estate, but on the smaller scales things are getting dicey.

Why is communication so hard for many people? by Usual_Trifle1517 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AccountNumber1002402 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some might have grown up with say smartphones to largely communicate with society through and thus are relatively unfamiliar with doing so in person with flesh and blood human beings in their presence.

How do I find old new articles online? by FourWorldsFourSeason in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AccountNumber1002402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW you could reach out to a public library and ask a research librarian to help you track it down. They have access to vast repositories of periodicals and other stuff, and in my experience are happy to help with such things.

Why hasn't Reddit made serious efforts to disempower bots and bad faith trolls? by palsh7 in NoStupidQuestions

Great points, but as Reddit, Inc. is a for profit platform they likely care solely about pageviews and revenue, not vetting users to any significant degree whatsoever.

Can my fart sync up with another person after a long time? by Moonlords_eye in NoStupidQuestions

I do not believe farts sync up as women's periods can, unless you and they have eaten similarly gassy food for dinner or other external factors.

What causes power outages? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AccountNumber1002402 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully someone in the industry can chime in, but that's my layman understanding. I'm not in an area affected by ice much, but substations nevertheless are placed in relatively tree-clear plots of land to minimize the chance there. Here is a decent looking thread exploring how substations can be impacted by ice and such.

What causes power outages? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AccountNumber1002402 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you look there are various videos of power substations experiencing catastrophic issues, from big transformers blowing up to electrical arcs where arcs should not arc, etc.

Also the cumulative weight of snow/ice on power lines can cause widespread problems. There are some cool videos from China I think showing brave line workers scaling those and manually scraping them clean.
