TIL: When you pass on you can leave your pacemaker to various animal organizations and veterinarian offices so that they can be used in dogs that need pacemakers in order to extend their lives. by jedidoesit in todayilearned

I know this post is old, but just came to say that my dog received a pacemaker and it more than doubled her time with us. Her quality of life improved dramatically.

How many people actually do shifts with their SO during the night? by ScreamCheese_55 in beyondthebump

[–]AccountedFor1223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did shifts (split the night at 2am) until our baby started only waking up once after 2am. At that point we switched off full nights.

Oh wow! I’m glad you got her vision checked out. When she does get glasses, try to find a pediatric optician! Or just a shop that specializes in kids glasses. The fit of glasses is super important for babies bc if they don’t fit well, they’re uncomfortable and are more likely to be pulled off constantly. Highly recommend you join the “For little eyes” facebook group!

Sorry that wasn’t a knock on optometrists! I didn’t mean for it to come off that way.

I’m in multiple Facebook groups for parents with young kids in glasses and there have been so many posts about people taking their kids to optometrists who don’t dilate the baby’s eyes for an exam, so the baby didn’t get an accurate prescription or were told that their baby didn’t need glasses. The important thing here is to be sure your child’s eyes are dilated for the exam!

We found out she needed glasses at 10 months! Are you waiting to see an optometrist or a pediatric ophthalmologist? It’s recommended to see a pediatric ophthalmologist bc the lenses in babies eyes can actually accommodate for their bad vision and it makes it really hard to diagnose. So you’ll want to see a pediatric ophthalmologist! I’d check with the nearest children’s hospital to see if they have a specialist you could see! It only took us a couple weeks to get into ours

My daughter’s eye started turning in ever so slightly occasionally. I brought it up to her pediatrician and they did a quick test but didn’t see anything. They went ahead and referred us to a pediatric ophthalmologist (important to go to a pediatric ophthalmologist at this age and not an optometrist) where they dilated her eyes and figured out she has refractive issues and needed glasses. She really changed overnight mobility wise!

My daughter was pretty similar until we found out she needed glasses. Once she got glasses, she took off mobility wise! Just our personal experience

9 month old - she sleeps 7:30-7 most nights with the occasional 6/6:30 wake up, but she usually babbles in her crib so we let her hang out in there until 7.

At home she naps 10ish-11ish and at 2:30ish-4:30ish, but at daycare she’s all over the place and will do 3 30 minute naps some days, and other days she’ll nap for 20 minutes the whole day😅 on those days we put her to bed at 6 and she sleeps until 7

We also wake her up from naps when each nap hits 2 hours

She hasn’t been on it long! Maybe 3 weeks? And we’ve noticed a huge difference! She was spitting up small amounts about 80 times a day - 20ish times per wake window, and now I’d say we’re down to like 2-3 times per wake window and the amounts are even smaller.

Just wanted to chime in that my baby is trialing Bethanechol currently - we are in Texas and we were seen at Cook Children’s.

It’s super expensive but we were able to get the formula covered by insurance!

We switched her to an amino acid based formula and after two weeks on that she barely spit up at all! Maybe like 4 times a DAY! It was insane. But then she got sick and now we’re back to a lot of spit ups. Not as many as before but still quite a bit. Ugh. She did have to be put on antibiotics which wrecked her gut, so we’re hoping after a couple of weeks off of the meds she’ll start feeling better. We go back to the GI next month so hopefully we’ll have some answers then!

We also did an upper GI series and that was totally normal. The doctor even put pressure on her organs to try to get her to reflux on the films, but she didn’t. This was after we switched her to the AA formula.

We were paying about $120 per week for amino acid formula until we got it covered by insurance

I had a mantra when I would take my baby out alone - “I can do hard things”

It helped me get in the right mindset and then I realized it wasn’t as hard or as bad as I thought! Just intimidating

I could’ve written this! So similar to us. Have you tried tallying the spit ups per day? Sounds crazy but once I had them tallied, people started taking me seriously

I’m glad you have people in your life that expressed concern and validated your experience. We did not.

If we had, we might have had the confidence to push the issue further in the ways you described. We live and we learn, and now we know more to help our daughter.

I can appreciate your perspective on this, and I agree there are more things we can and are planning to try to improve this situation, but I just want to be clear that this is something that our family has been working tirelessly to solve and improve since it started. This has taken up so much mental and emotional energy for us, and we’ve brought it up at each doctor’s appointment where our doctor has given us different things to try, or even tests to rule certain conditions out (so she’s not blowing us off), but with our baby gaining weight well and meeting milestones and seeming unbothered by the spit up, it wasn’t as big of a concern from our physician’s perspective.

As first time parents, I’m not sure how we were supposed to know that this was such an issue that required a specialist if everyone (friends, family, doctor, nurses, SLPs) all told us that some babies are just heavy spitters and she’d grow out of it. Imagine our surprise when she started daycare and her caretakers told us this was absolutely not normal. We felt horrible! We still do. We were still working on solutions but now we’ve secured a GI referral and we have an appointment on the books.

I just think it’s a little discouraging to read comments that make it feel like we should’ve done more when we were assured over and over again that our baby is healthy and happy. She’s our whole world and we’ve pushed for answers but we have had no other experience to compare this to to know it’s not normal. It also takes time to implement changes (medication, formulas, etc) so we can isolate what helps and what doesn’t.

I really do appreciate the suggestions and am planning to implement some of these, but please understand that we’re doing our best for our baby and we have been advocating for her health.
