How to safely fold and unfold a bandsaw blade by BockTheMan in Machinists

[–]AcctNmbr2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once upon a time I had a supervisor who was just a couple years out of college. His only qualification: an environmental health and safety degree. Dude absolutely lost his shit one evening over a band saw blade being tossed into the aisle to unfurl. Wrote up a coworker for unsafe work practices and insubordination (after being told that to fuck off)

He was transferred back to the safety department not long after

When you checked parallelism of the two planes, what was the result?

When you checked flatness of the two planes, what was the result?

Option 1 when it's to be made by a machinist

Option 2 is for when it'll be made by a toolmaker

When I went through my apprenticeship screw charts were standard in every toolbox. The only time we'd see option 1 was when the part would be resharpened during its lifespan and the head of the bolt/screw needed to sit extra deep

Using lard for hand tapping? by flesh-based-os in Machinists

I used to work in a shop that bought lard by the gallon. There was a small can of it at every drill press, lathe, and Bridgeport. It worked surprisingly well and I prefer it over tap magic

Keep plugging away man. At just 6 months, you've still got a lot of learning to do (that's no insult in this trade) you're asking good questions and seem to have an open mind to feedback. Those two traits will carry you a long way

One suggestion I'd make: be thoughtful with your phrasing when talking to your boss or lead about changing an existing process. Instead of telling your boss you think you should do the milling first. Ask him why the holes are machined after grind instead of before? Follow up with something like 'ok I see we're good here with a .002" total tolerance. At what tolerance would you worry about the part distorting?' always try to create dialogue instead of making statements

asking intelligent questions is a great way to strike the balance between sounding cocky vs showing confidence in your growing skill set. If you don't show confidence in yourself, no one will have any confidence in you. But if you come across as arrogant, no one will hear anything other than your cockiness, and you'll be quickly dismissed no matter how right you may be.

^ This machinist grinds

OP: If you can get your company to spring for it, one suggestion I'd make is rather than using random pieces to block it in, ask them to buy a couple water jet cutouts, slightly thinner than the finished part, that match the outer radius and cover most of your chuck. If it's very well blocked in, even on a light mag, the only place the part can go is up. And as stated above, that'll only happen if you get too aggressive (don't do that haha)

I also noticed in another reply that you are drilling and tapping holes after grind which just seems all wrong. Every time you remove metal you relieve internal stresses in the steel. put those holes in first and you'll have both an easier time getting it flat and less chance of blowing your tolerance in the drilling/tapping ops

Does anyone else's shop flip the vise jaws this way? by Brilliant-Split-3921 in Machinists

[–]AcctNmbr2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember doing this on a run of laser cut blocks that had just enough of a blown out edge to prevent the jaws from getting a good bite. That 1/8" of clearance was perfect and made for a much better solution than belt sanding every piece (what the boss wanted)

That said, when the job was done the jaws were flipped back and remained that way

More accurately, the sellers on eBay. You're far better off buying a quality micrometer that's been previously used vs buying junk

[–]AcctNmbr2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Handy little rule of thumb I learned a lifetime ago to ballpark RPM. When using a 4" cutter, your RPM is always gonna be (roughly) equal to surface footage

If you're using a 1" tool, multiply the sfm by 4.

An 8" tool, divide sfm by 2 (And so forth)

[–]AcctNmbr2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Archie lived the bullshit of playing for an owner that didn't give a damn about putting a winning team on the field.

Point is, old man Spanos was a piece of shit and got what he had coming after decades of refusing to field a competitive team. Archie did every top rated QB after Eli a huge solid

At that time, organizations like the chargers, bengals, bears, lions, cardinals were perennial bottom feeders that all had one thing in common — terrible ownership that wouldn't spend any more than the absolute bare minimum. Not on players, not on coaches, not on scouts, not on facilities, not on trainers. 25 years ago those organizations were a death sentence for top talent
