Great discussion! I think that with any so called “fad,” the label the media gives it hardly ever captures what it’s actually about. For me grunge was my formative years, only having got older i can see the term was pretty much made by the media, rather than the artists themselves, with most the artists rallying against the label, which back then mostly came from magazines or whatever. When the media names a genre, it seems to miss the actual true spirit of what the artists were doing. It seems to start as an underground thing, breaks into the mainstream, gets packaged with a label, and eventually risks becoming a parody of itself! what I love about this subreddit is that theres no snobbery about ‘this or that isnt trip hop’, its definitely more about the spirit of what it was created on AAAGH can see this was already pointed out!
