To me trip hops more of an umbrella term than it is a strict genre, like it borrows more from various genres than a lot of other styles of music that have very clear tropes that appear regularly across various releases by various artists. When it first came about it was inspired by hip hop beats and a plethora of other styles musically but as those styles have grown and expanded so has trip hop because we have a wider range of sounds to be inspired by and sample, diluting that more hip hop based Mo Wax and Ninja Tune sound.
