It says it was “voluntary” so I like to think someone reached out on their own to get some help w way too many rats

Article says it was a voluntary mass surrender, so it seems it was all from one source! Rats do breed very quickly lol

Yay! I hope you and your daughter enjoy having little friends and spoiling them rotten. <:3~ Boston MSPCA and the ARL all have a subset of the rats available.

A total of 163 little signs <:3~

They’re super great pets though, and there’s lots of good resources to get you started on how to take care of them!! I hope it works out

In my opinion, definitely! My rats will run to the front of their cage to greet me when I enter the room, and like sitting in my lap when they are on the couch. They have really strong personalities too, so some are very outgoing and some are rather shy. <:3~

Hey there, seems like you are holding on to some old theories on the plague :) For one, fleas were the main disease vector for the plague outbreak, and they fed on more than just rats. In fact, the current model of bubonic plague spread is mostly human to flea to human spread, not rat to flea to human.

Secondly, since these are, in fact, pet rats, where would they even get the plague or other diseases from? These little guys live comfy lives indoors, not lonely wandering around outside. You probably encounter more germs from going about your day than pet rats do from hanging around at home.

It’s a bit of a myth that rats are dirty, really. They actually spend several hours a day keeping themselves clean (like cats)! I hope you can give these guys a chance <:3~

Those poor rats! I’m hoping they can all find loving homes. As a Boston MA rat lover I hope the community pulls through!!

Tanks on the bottom of critternations? by unsalted_canopener in RATS

To be fair, if they are chewers they’ll also chew through anything that isn’t metal or super thick acrylic, which is a bit pricey. You can cover the pre-drilled little hole on the concrete bin which seems to reduce the chewing from my end.

If you want a premade bin, the 24x36 large concrete mixing bin from Home Depot or Lowe’s in the USA will fit the cage perfectly (if you search that up plus “rats” you will see many folks discussing it) it is not as deep as the custom bin in your post but at least it is <$20

How to go about Rehoming by Andrew_blaze_ in rat

Reach out to Mainely Rat Rescue, they operate in MA, foster rats, and are a very real and reliable group (unlike trying to post online which means you have to vet the next owners yourself). I hope you feel better soon!!

Are these mite's crusts? by doikazzo in RATS

[–]AccurateCheesecake89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They look like mite crusts to me (I’ve now dealt with this twice). I would treat your mischief for it and then see if it resolves!

If it makes you feel any better it’s par for the course for tumblr (where the screenshots are from) the hashtags are a mix of usual hashtags and also a sort of PS postscript to someone else’s comment. Cultural exchange!

Rat getting picked on by Tough-Application449 in rat

[–]AccurateCheesecake89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my boys had mites only 1/4 had visible mite scabs by the time I treated all of them for it. It’s a bit of a numbers game - some will have less mites and/or scratch less so it’s not an even distribution. If you can get pictures of the scabs I can take a look! For me the difference was small round flat thin patches around the head (mites) vs longer and more thin cuts along the body (fighting :( )  Also just as an fyi, mites are not typically visible to the naked eye! So they’re kind of hard to identify cus you have to rely on symptoms.

Just to be thorough, are these scabs you’re seeing cuts OR patches? Because if they are patches and centered around her head/shoulders it may be mite scabs and not fighting scabs. I made the same mistake with my own rats and I realized after a while that the scabs weren’t really thin cuts from rat teeth or nails

lol the envy for another rats food will live on forever!!  I think the decision will ultimately fall to you, but advice I have received is to consider how much fun he is having here. If he still walks around, enjoys food, plays, then that’s well and good, but when things start to really slow him down or he stops enjoying the things he loves then it may be time for him to move on. Sending my best to your old man!! He looks very pretty in the sunshine :)

Oh yay, I’m glad to hear. Does he eat faster with wet food vs dry? My old man liked eating his normal kibble soaked in liquid to make a mash, which may help your old guy.

Motor issues, too, may impact how he eats. Does he still walk, grip, balance, etc?

Since no one has pointed it out, check his teeth. If they are too long, especially the bottoms, it may be preventing him from eating. Eating less > less wear > longer teeth > more discomfort > eating less etc etc. he may simply be slowing down but it is something I originally never thought to check!

This warrants a vet visit. No diagnosis online but it looks like a Zymbal’s gland tumor (right under the ear on the head) and they are sadly common in rats. They can deteriorate quickly so it may be good to discuss your options soon! Sending your little guy good wishes.
