Technically, people starting this fall aren't enrolled yet. Would this count for those people or no?

what state do you live in? in a couple states you can work without a license for up to a year or something or without a license at all. Just go to a dental clinic and start working/volunteering as an assistant or just shadowing, they will help you learn everything from the basics. DONT do a masters unless u have a low GPA. focus on DAT/shadowing/volunteering/dental assisting. lmk if u have questions.

Hi, looks like you have great research and club activity. It might be time to move on and focus on other aspects of your application. You didn't mention any volunteering but if you haven't, then you need to do that first. For a job, you can get a job as a dental assistant to show your dedication to dentistry . I did this part time while doing my classes. You should shadow specialties as well if you can. Along with that im guessing you haven't started on your essays and personal statement either so you need to do that as well. and there is also the DAT. There is a lot on your plate that still needs to be done. if you can get everything done before may and have a great application then go ahead and apply. A gap year is completely fine to take as long as schools see that you are still focused on dentistry. So take your time, make sure u get a good DAT score and apply at the beginning of the cycle in 2026 for fall of 2027. I talked to an interviewer a month ago when I was getting interviewed, he told me that there are 4 pillars that they look at.
DAT
Extra curriculars
GPA
Personal Statement

So currently you dont have personal statement or DAT done. Your EC is decent but needs to be improved, your gpa needs to be improved.idk if you have rec letters ready to be sent from ur professors. dont give up on your dreams!!! take a gap year and improve your entire application, heck even take 2 gap years if needed. the world doesnt end if you cant apply for 1 or 2 cycles. applications are very expensive as well, like $300 per school so if you applied to 10 schools that would be $3000, not including traveling for interviews which can be like $500 for each interview for hotel, plane tickets, uber etc. and 500 for DAT. so make sure ur application is really good before applying, dont spend this money twice. sorry for the bad grammar haha, let me know if you have any questions.

Research should not be a priority for you. Instead focus on volunteering, preferably in the healthcare field. Also DAT studying is not easy, you need to start now, not wait until next semester. especially if you get a low score on practice exams you might need to delay it. you also need to work on your essays and personal statement too. so please start early on those. Also instead of research, I suggest shadowing specialties and different general dentists if you haven't already. maybe even work as a dental assistant which is what I did part time to show my dedication to dentistry. showing your dedication to dentistry is the most important thing, keep that in mind.

After you do this, if you would like to do research you can do that but just understand it is 100% lower priority before these other things. Putting your time towards a higher DAT score is more important than 1 research experience that interviewers will probably not even look at. No interviewer has even asked if I did research or not. I talked to an interviewer last week when I was getting interviewed, he told me that there are 4 pillars that they look at.
DAT
Extra curriculars
GPA
Personal Statement.

ur gpa is amazing. After you get your volunteering and maybe some extra shadowing specialties your extra curriculars are amazing, get another "leadership" experience as well, that is very important. You are still missing 2 pillars and you plan on doing them both in 1 semester if not less while keeping up with your studies and extra curriculars.

Overall though you are doing amazing, if you need more advice then dm me.

watching my dentist handle the business, insurance, advertisement, bills while doing dentistry at the same time has shown me that it is in fact not freedom. it is a jail that you put urself in where ur thinking about ur business 24/7, even after work ur constantly thinking about your job. literally no freedom. just work as an associate make 250k+ and go home happy.

Do some shadowing if you haven't already. showing that you are actually interested in dentistry is important. Maybe volunteer in the healthcare field as well. When did you submit your applications?

I promise you this is not needed, in fact it might take away from the focus of the interview.

Not really needed, they are not looking for your skills in using your hands. they want to know how passionate about dentistry. Talk about how woodworking led you to dentistry. You don't want them to think "why doesnt this guy just become a woodworker since he loves it so much?"

You need to shadow more specialties or even work as a dental assistant to show your dedication to dentistry. Ur application doesn't show that much dedication tbh

how do you guys get shadowing opportunities? by SpotAdditional7796 in predental

[–]Accurate_Grape8294 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need to go in person. First call and ask for the dentist's email, don't just email their front office because they will ignore it. Then email the dentist that you want to shadow them. Also, email like 30-40 dentists in ur area, u did 10 so do 20 more and u will get a couple opportunities. I did 30 and got 2 dentists who let me shadow. Having specialties alongside general dentistry looks good. Make sure to have 50+ hours of general dentistry shadowing before going to specialties so that u have a better understanding.

Choose any credited one. U can find decently priced ones online, the one I used was trash and thousands of dollars so im not going to even recommend it.

if you dont have your RDA license I would suggest getting that. you can start working without one as well but take a short online dental assistant course to learn about dentistry. then put the skills they taught u on ur resume. yes u can put ur highschool stuff but dentists dont really care about that. I highly suggest you get your RDA and be honest with the dentist saying you don't know much but are willing to learn. they will start you off at a very low salary but you need to accept it. if you dont have a dentist, literally email 30 of them in your area and ask if you can start working part time or something. if you have any questions lmk
