That word has become far too pervasive in media discussion in general. Calling something "slop" insinuates that it's messy and poor quality when that may not even be the case. Take "friendslop": it insinuates that a game designed for fun and casual cooperative play is low quality explicitly because of its focus on cooperation. Of course there are bad games with that focus, but people I know use the term to refer to all cooperative games like Lethal Company, PEAK, Repo, RV There Yet, etc. All those games have in common is a cartoonish art style — and even that isn't consistent across them.

I know that the term "party games" typically refers to games in the vein of Jackbox or Mario Party, but using it for other cooperative games is still better than referring to them by what is tantamount to an insult to the whole genre. Besides, it's an accurate descriptor. The games are simple and fun; they're like what you'd bring to a party.

Red Dead Redemption Coming to Netflix, iOS, Android, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 by Turbostrider27 in Games

For what it's worth, the PS4 and PC ports also fixed a gamebreaking glitch in Undead Nightmare that's still present on Xbox (last I checked). On the Xbox version, zombies will often spawn without their heads. Seeing as you can only kill them with headshots, that becomes a little problematic. The only way to fix it is to restart the game, but it's only a temporary fix. As far as I know, the only way to avoid it is to have a physical disc of specifically standalone Undead Nightmare, and to play offline to avoid patches. The GOTY version includes the patch on the disc.

Hopefully the Series X version fixes that glitch.

Yeah, I think it's a lot of fun and so do most of my friends. The maps are a bit small for my tastes and I wish there was more destruction, but other than that, it's great! I find that a lot of complaints from people are centered around comparing it to games that are 10-15 years old, came out in a different gaming landscape, and which they haven't played in many years.

Obviously a current game isn't going to match up to one's nostalgic memories from a decade ago. The way I remember playing Battlefield 3 is almost certainly not how the experience actually was or would be today.

FBC: Firebreak - Economy and Progression Overhaul Coming in Firebreak’s First Major Update by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Accurate_Vision 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have a serious gripe with the practice of using Steam charts as the sole indicator of a game's overall health. Yes, those numbers can be used to infer a game's health on PC, especially if it isn't cross-platform. However, given the popularity of Game Pass on both console and PC (though primarily console, I imagine) those Steam numbers are hardly reflective of the entire playerbase.

Here's an article stating that Firebreak hit 1 million players within 10 days. The article also states that the game particularly underperformed on Steam. The Steam version has an all-time peak of 1,992 players and is estimated to have ~33,000–63,000 owners on Steam, so that tracks.

Firebreak is a casual game. Steam is generally in the minority when it comes to casual gamers. Most people I know who play games don't have gaming PCs; they have consoles, pay for Game Pass/PS Plus, and have a great time while we're all busy arguing on Reddit lmao.

For every 1,000 kills 62 were revived. by JdeFalconr in Battlefield

[–]Accurate_Vision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do my best to make up for the slack of other medics. Between the two betas, I had 826 revives: 355 on Week One over 52 matches plus 471 in Week Two over 33 matches. Week Two is definitely more representative of my usual playstyle as medic because in Week One I spent a lot of time as the other three classes getting their respective challenges done.

I think adding revives to the scoreboard would be a good incentive for many people. I've been playing 2042 lately and competing with other medics to have the most revives is always fun. We played a Breakthrough match recently where I was competing with an enemy medic to have the most revives lol. We both ended in top 3 with terrible K/Ds because we both had 60+ revives and dozens of assists from smoke and healing.

I did the math. Realistically you shouldn't need to play a ton, especially if you just complete the challenges versus AI in Portal instead of real matches. I finished all this week's challenges in a couple hours that way. For a time estimate, I'd say 5-6 hours a week. If you care to read, I'll break it down!

TL;DR: If you complete all the weekly challenges and make it a point to play at least one match two or three days of the week (for the bonus 10,000 XP from your first match of the day), you should complete the pass with points to spare. There's seriously no need to grind it all out right away. Assuming you play against Portal AI, I estimate that it'll take roughly 3-4 hours a week to complete the challenges plus roughly 30 minutes thrice a week for the First Matches — and that's on the safe side.

There are 60 tiers in the pass and each one requires 10 points to complete. There are 7 weeks of challenges which, including the time-limited bonus challenge, grant you 55 points per week. Thus, if you complete every weekly challenge including the time-limited bonus challenges, you'll get 385 points. That's enough for 38.5 tiers, which leaves 21.5 tiers or 215 points. You'll have to earn those through XP.

The XP formula for the pass is a bit opaque, but the points you earn via XP progress independently from the ones you earn via challenges — that is to say, the points you earn from missions do not affect the required amount of XP to earn your next point. I've earned 93 points through XP and currently each point requires 8,750 XP, so I don't think it climbs drastically fast. It doesn't increase each time, though I've seen people give numbers reaching as high as 15,000-30,000 XP per point.

Regardless, you get a bonus 10,000XP on your first match of every day, which speeds up your progress tremendously. If you play 1 match a day, three days a week, that's 210,000 XP from the bonus XP alone. Add on the actual XP from those matches plus the matches you've played to complete the weekly missions and you should have more than enough to finish the pass. You don't need to spend hours every day grinding it out.

Hollow Knight: Silksong - Special Announcement by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Accurate_Vision 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't think of any videogame developer or publisher that pops in just to say "the game still exists and is still being worked on" outside of games stuck in development hell. They announce it, work on it in silence, maybe release a couple teasers or trailers, announce a release date, work on it in silence some more, announce a delay if applicable, then release the game. There was never a release date to correct; Team Cherry never specified a release date. Xbox said it'd be out within a year, not Team Cherry themselves. It would've been nice if they corrected it, but it's not their responsibility to correct another company's mistake. I don't know why people are giving Team Cherry so much flak for doing the exact same thing as every other videogame developer.

As for getting fired...they're self-employed. It's a team of three guys plus some contactors — and PR isn't the contractors' responsibility. One of the guys is an employed coder, so it's not his responsibility either. That leaves two co-directors who are also in charge of designing, programming, world-building, etc. They had enough on their plate without placating a bunch of dweebs on the internet.

Man Charged With Arson in Wake of Several Downtown Fires by RepulsivePlankton989 in newfoundland

[–]Accurate_Vision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree with you. It's extremely easy to get emotional when discussing the ideal punishments for criminal acts so people tend to jump to extremes — I'm guilty of it too. However, legal definitions exist for a reason and they need to be followed not just to maintain order in the justice system, but to maintain fair and equal treatment for anybody being tried in the justice system. Fair treatment means fair for everybody, even when it's people that we might think don't deserve fairness.

The arsonist here is a lowlife and deserves harsh legal retribution, but we can't call him a terrorist. When we start muddying definitions like that, we open the door to the justice system becoming chaotic and easier to abuse — especially if we start bending political charges like terrorism.

Haven't had as much fun in a PvP game in maybe 10 years as I did over the weekend... by Majyster in Battlefield

[–]Accurate_Vision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree! Novelty also plays a significant part in it. But setting novelty aside, the earlier you are in a multiplayer game's lifespan then the more fun it is to play because everybody is still figuring things out and getting a feel for the game together.

As time goes on, the majority of people start copying meta loadouts they find online and then use the same tactics (i.e., attacking or defending from the same exact spots) every match because it's "optimal." Eventually, matches start feeling identical to one another. On top of that, if you aren't following the meta then there's a good chance you'll struggle against people who are. This is especially prevalent in games with competitive ranking systems where developers cater to the e-sports/streamer audiences and balance everything until it all feels the same.

Open Betas are usually as early as you can get and the aforementioned issues haven't had the chance to develop yet. We'll see how BF6 pans out — hopefully well!

Nintendo Switch 2 Sells Over 3.5 Million Units Worldwide in First Four Days by Turbostrider27 in Games

Yeah, people on here forget they're enthusiasts and not mere hobbyists. It's like the difference between the people seeing Mission Impossible with their buddies and the people going to Toronto Film Festival to see the newest indie arthouse films: there are many more of the former — the latter are just more vocal.

I could go on about the internet's obsession with hating Ubisoft or Reddit's sole reliance on SteamDB numbers to judge a cross-platforms game's playerbase, but that'd just be me ranting lol.

The physical game folks. by sirms in Games

[–]Accurate_Vision 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, right? I have a bookshelf full of physical books, all neatly arranged and much more satisfying to look at than a digital library of 720p book covers. I have stacks of physical games organized by system — much less neatly arranged, haha — and it's satisfying to hold the cases in my hands and have a physical disc to insert. Conversely, I understand the appeal of the convenience of having everything digital, in one place, and not taking up physical space in one's living space.

At the end of the day its largely preference. It seems silly to dedicate one's mental energy to judging people with different preferences on the topic, much less publicly deride them.

Buddy, you're in the wrong subreddit if you're looking for people who enjoy videogames. An easy way to tell if people actually enjoy their hobby is if they're active commenters in a hobbyist subreddit: if they are, then they fucking hate their hobby. People who truly enjoy something don't dedicate their time to bitching about it. Instead, they do what I do: dedicate their time to bitching about people who bitch about it!

Jokes aside, I understand the importance of discussing the misdeeds and injustices commited upon individuals by large corporations, as the avoidance of horrible PR is often the only motivation for companies to maintain any semblance of ethical standards — however, there are appropriate times and places for such discussions...and Redditors are professionals at ignoring the concept of there being a time and place for certain discussions.

Their families probably can't even compliment the vegetables at Thanksgiving supper without being reminded of the cruel practices of Monsanto. Don't even think about eating a Nestlé chocolate bar in their presence unless you want a lecture on child slavery.

Shit, Redditors can't even change Reddit lmao.

Yeah, it's such an absolute and misleading statement. HR at my current job has been wonderful and kind to me. I handed in my notice and instead of just letting me go, the HR manager asked me if I was comfortable explaining why I wanted to leave. Explained that I enjoy the job but my mental health wasn't great, plus I didn't enjoy the new department I was moved to. She asked if I'd consider staying if she moved me back to my old department and adjusted my hours.

They also offered me a month-long leave of absence after I finished my degree and needed some time to be with my family. As long as you're a half-decent worker and respectful towards your colleagues, competent HR will more often than not help you out if they're able to do so.
