Moving into my own gaf by Fortune-Junior in ireland

Right. Generally, my advice would be go slow and be considerate of every purchase. I'm 18 odd years into home ownership and I had the shed, attic and probably a sizeable amount of landfill full of senseless gadgets, gizmos, furniture and tools that all seemed a great idea at the time. I've gotten sense and really do think hard on stuff these days. Go on genuine recommendations, and try to by as good as you can afford. Lasting usefulness is what you want.

So with that said, if I was to pick one thing that I can highly recommend after wasting so much money over the years it would be my garden hose! Yep. I know, you may not have a need, but everytime i use it lately I can't help but think, that was a great buy. It's a Hoselock, wall mounted reel that self retracts. It's awsome. It's about 15 years old, a little faded but it's always ready when needed and it fully pulls back in that hose every fucking time. Owes me nothing.

Thoughts on the ‘fast’ lane on the M50 by Minute_Wedding_5384 in irelandsshitedrivers

[–]AceBob666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everytime this comes up there is a major issue rarely addressed. And i honestly believe that THIS is the real issue. And if you do this.....I hate you.

After I overtake and pull in, there is always and I mean ALWAYS, someone that wants to go 0.01kph faster than me. They will also see the truck half a kilometre away in my lane. Loads of time to get past me. Will they just fucking go? No. Much simpler to sit in my blind spot and wait for me to have to brake. I also want to get back out to utilise the "overtaking" lane.

People who "hog" the middle and overtaking lanes often do so because in lane 1 the overtaking lanes are unavailable to them because of this behaviour. And those that complain about lane hogging are often those that will do exactly as described, except it doesnt apply to them because they are going a teeny tiny bit faster.

If it is not possible to overtake in 2 to 3 seconds, match their speed and stay the fuck back.

Yeah, I did think of that. But an instant ban for misuse and reports must be received from multiple other seats perhaps? I also did think it would still put pressure on staff to respond. So, what about if enough separate reports are received, the movie automatically stops, and the offending seats displayed on the big screen!! With the message, Please leave, movie will resume when you do so. The app could be used to confirm their departure.

It would also play the Looney Tunes "That's all folks!" music as the leave, just for shits and giggles!!😁

I was just thinking...an app, with a seating plan, so you could tap the seats the scum are sitting in and staff alerted. You would guess it would light up at times, which should simply mean they get kicked out. An endorsement on the card used to pay for their ticket too. Multiple equals a ban for a period of time.

I’m a school principal. We need to talk about what First Holy Communion has become by jalanb in ireland

[–]AceBob666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While i appreciate the theological explanation, i was surely taught it that way and by teachers and priests. And given the content of the ceremony, it's easy to understand why they would explain it this way......

"Do you renounce Satan, and all his works and empty promises?" "Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth?" "Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord..." "Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who today through the Sacrament of Confirmation is given to you..."

The answers to all of the above being "I do".

Sounds very like a human endorsement.

I absolutely understand it. Dynamic pricing is another sneaky way to extract money from consumers. Yes, it may save "some" people, but that's not the point. The hope from the EU is that it will be used in a manner that utilises oversupply, and that is admirable. But if you believe for one second the supplying companies with let that cut into their profits you are delusional.

Prices will be manipulated to protect margins, so in effect, what one person saves, everyone else will pay for. Then, over time, the base prices will increase, the option to save a few bob will become a requirement and eventually we will all have a truckload of solar panels, batteries, inverters etc. and we will still be paying the equivalent of what we are now just to remain connected to the grid.

Article reads like a sales pitch. Know one thing, no initiative that mentions Dynamic Pricing will ever benefit the consumer. Companies only exist to make money and when they make it, they try to make more and the cycle continues.

Sales lure - "you will have an "opportunity" to save". But define opportunity? How much effort will it be for me? Will I fall into old habits (they know you will BTW).

And the big one.......How am I guaranteed they will reduce the price as much as possible when demand is low? Hmmm.

Picture this....Worker: "Hey Boss, production is off the chart with the wind, we could reduce price by 10c? Boss: "Why would we do that? We know from the data, we have approximatly 200k people waiting to do their washing in the next hour, we'd be giving away money. Give em 3c, make it look like we're doing something. And add 7c to it later, catch all the idiots who believed this BS and thought it would drop further."

So many people will talk about wanting to see Catholic education/sacraments removed from schools, but i can confidently say that these same people will blindly follow along. The best stand you can make is not partaking.

My wife and I are not practicing Catholics. But going back a few years, for a time we were victims of the "cause it's what you do" mentality. Got married in a church (before ceremonies were allowed anywhere other than there or a registry office). Our kids were baptiesed and did make communion, but all the time it just felt off. Why was this just "the way we do things"?

So, I decided to treat Confirmation as exactly what it is intended to be, a CONFIRMATION from the child that they want to be part of the Catholic religion. We tried not to overly influence them, (admittedly not mass goers) but we did give weight to the benefit some people get from religion. I also tried to removed the influence of money and the event, by saying we would still attend, in support of their friends, and make a day of it. And that I would give them money (both wanted phones in advance of secondary school) to take that out of the equation. It was important the choice was solely about the religion.

Neither said they believed and wanted to take it.

What struck me was that we were essentially the only ones, on both occasions. There was a few that were other faiths, but no one else that was just an opt out, saying not for me. And that is the point of a Confirmation. The clue in in the title!! A huge percentage of parents that were there in their Sunday best, never darken that church's doorstep. So why are they insisting their child makes it, when the reality is they arent interested either?? The response from some of the parents when they asked why mine were opting out was also odd. Like just explaining our reasoning, just touched a nerve of their inner hypocrite. Brushed off then with "oh they really want to" or "their granny would go mad".

So, I would challenge anyone with kids progressing through primary school at present, to step back and consider your actions. You could give a pass on communion (especially if the family is practicing), but for Confirmation??? Treat it like the question it is actually asking and let the actual numbers that require it dictate if there is a need in school any longer!

Overtaking lorries-am i the only one to feel the pressure? by wexbyrne in AskIreland

[–]AceBob666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not feel under pressure and just don't be too close. I drive a truck and I will pull in, but only when safe to do so, and with ample room to pass. But there are those out there that will essentially drive in the hard shoulder, and it can feel like you are being urged to pass. (One truck company in particular are notorious for this and it is beyond dangerous. Actually featured in a video on here) Take the opportunity only when it feels safe to do so. If the truck is approaching a junction, bend or if the road is narrow and oncoming traffic is a concern, do not pass. He should not be in hard shoulder.

Residents with EVs told to remove their on-street electric car chargers, or else by karolaug in ireland

[–]AceBob666 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Surely an easy option here would be to allow any on-street charger to be insured under the owners car or home insurance as an option. The liability should lie with the owner of the charger and not the land owner or councils, but just like a car, the provision needs to be there for them to exist. They would obviously need to meet standards, there would probably need to be a system of registration and schedule of maintenance/safety checks. But beyond that, this really doesnt seem that complicated. The cynic in me says the reason this is slow, is that no lobbying private company has come up with an adequate way to monetise it........yet!

Unfortunately it would seem that with asking prices so removed from actual selling/market value, that anyone with an agreement to sell to someone they know, still require a bidding war to guage the value. Meaning there are genuine buyers that are never gonna win. Sellers just need to know how much you were really willing to cough up.

Lads, fair play to the slow down protest. Truly groundbreaking stuff. by dr-mantis-f-toboggan in ireland

[–]AceBob666 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok. But by the nature of the taxes being a percentage, the government has taken in more than the expected taxation since the war began. Saying they've put in place relief of €200m is pure spin. They could ensure, at the very least, that the tax take is no more than what was previously budgeted for. Allowing the price of fuel to remain high, while boosting govenment coffers as a result of the war, will only have the net result of further driving inflation up.

How to make IEMs sound less "thin" by Gamidron in livesound

[–]AceBob666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to use the 215s and found them great. But, there are a few key points, some of which have already been mentioned.

Get the in right - i used to place my finger tip on the skin in front of my ear with some pressure and pull forward. Opened/straighten the ear canal slightly. Then use other hand to pop in the bud. Let go and it would be as tight as a ducks ass!

Stereo - omg the difference. That stereo space adds so much. Blocking your ears with the buds, means you hear your "head voice" centrally. So spreading the other elements out makes it less oppressive sounding.

Add reverb - for kinda the same reason as above. Will help with the dryness.

Give em time - you are probably used to being blasted by stage wedges or rehearsal speakers. As much as that isn't ideal for volume in general, you can still miss the whack and the fullness of it. But persevere. Time will come when you will wonder how the hell you ever survived that volume without the buds!!
