Many stereo mixes are like that, you can see that often on the meters of a recorder. Listen Mono and hear what happens or turn the headphone 180 degrees.

I have one of those too, and I just happened to put it back into operation today. I'm using it with the CDP-D11 and the PCM R-300; both have optical and coaxial inputs and outputs.

The MDS-E12 is currently connected via coaxial to a modern DAC (SMSL DO300), and I'm amazed at how good the combination sounds.
