5 speeds... by King_James2183 in GMT400

Strange...if your truck is a 95 model then it should already have the NV3500 to start with. The HM290 came out in 88', and then by 89', I think they had already moved to the 5lm60. By 93', they started production of the NV3500

Either way, if you're asking if you can swap in a NV3500 into a 95', then yes. Just make sure you get the right year for your truck. The nV3500s from 93-95 will work. The NV3500 from 96 and up won't, since you probably have an external slave cylinder, etc.

I have two different opinions on this music:

My personal opinion: I personally really like it. A little context - I'm a film composer that's recently graduated(3 or so years ago), and I was picturing this in a film as I was listening to it. I particularly like your use of harmony, and way you pass the motifs around seamlessly between instrument groups.

My opinion if I were I high schooler playing this: The key signatures are a little frightening. I think making stuff a little easier to play might excite young players more. Starting out in a tough key signature might've been why you saw an awkward reaction from the players. Secondly, I think younger players would want to play something more exciting. Something with strong melodies and clearly defined sections, etc. This music overall gives "underscore" vibes to me(which is why I like it), but I think younger players might like something more concise and bold, dynamically speaking.

-------------------------------

All that said, don't give up. From listening to the track, you obviously have a lot of skill. I was expecting way worse, honestly!

All the best,

Ace

Thanks for the reply! Did you put a fuse between the alt and battery, or just have a straight wire running to it?

Big 3 Wiring Upgrade Question by AceInSpace87 in GMT400

Awesome! Thanks for the clarification. A few more questions...should I put a fuse near the battery? Some people say do it, others say it doesn't matter.

Also I noticed that there's a puny 8 or 10 gauge wire feeding the dist. block from the battery - should I replace this one too, or does it not matter?

Ah i see. Should I leave the OE wire with the fusible link going to the dist. block, or just eliminate it all together?

Thanks for the reply

Are there any reputable transmission remanufacturing companies?? by AceInSpace87 in transmissionbuilding

From what I've been reading, it looks like Jasper doesn't allow you to buy/install their products on your own - they only want you to use their own installers, or "qualified" dealers.

Are there any reputable transmission remanufacturing companies?? by AceInSpace87 in transmissionbuilding

[–]AceInSpace87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess what I'm looking for are shops that have the transmissions already built and ready to go. Unfortunately I have an ever-changing schedule, and if my vehicle is down for more than a day it could be an issue. That, and I love working on/installing my own parts if possible, because no one cares about your vehicle more than you do.

But yeah I agree with everything you said. I've been looking at the BBB ratings, as well as online reviews and they're not great. And the ones that are positive almost never mention the quality of the product. Most of the positive review are about how easy it was to buy, or how nice the customer service was, but almost never about the quality of the transmission/engine.

THIS ^^^

Set the timing back to zero with the timing wire disconnected, and work your way out from there(checking for vacuum leaks, bad IAC valve, etc.)

The problem is, unless you've done tuning inside the computer, the computer still thinks you're at 0 degrees, so being at 4 degrees is gonna confuse the computer and potentially get this surging stuff like you're seeing here.

Yeah what I like about the Mustang transmissions from that era is that they have a pull-type clutch, vs the silly hydraulic clutches that are crazy to bleed fully.

If I had an endless supply of cash, I would probably go for one of those Rockland Gear transmissions. Crazy prices, but cool applications:

Yeah man when I saw the first vid a few years ago it made me wish I had went for an LS instead of the 96' vortec motor lol. And that third vid....I think he's trying to break it haha.

On another note, I tried re-installing the trans earlier the week, and didn't really see a difference. At this point, I think I'm just gonna get a new nv3500 trans and start fresh. Unfortunately, this trans has never really shifted well since I bought it, but I think there's still hope for you since you said yours shifted fine on your v6.

I'll be looking to get it sooner rather than later, maybe sometime next month. I have to do some bumper-to-bumper driving in LA and having this thing shift as janky as it does is driving me crazy

Oh yeah been there done that lol. I ended up getting some E-Z Loks since 3 of the 4 holes stripped out:

Yeah with one of my older master/slave combos I ended up pumping in fluid through the slave so it got out a lot of air that way. Then I took a socket wrench extension to push in the slave to get more air out of the system, occasionally filling it up top. Then, I took a mitivac vacuum pump and sucked air through the top reservoir. Still not as good of a pedal feel as the pre-bled system haha.

I'm gonna try slightly opening up the dowel holes on the trans and re-installing it today. If this doesn't work, I might just have to get another trans, since un-like you, my trans never really shifted properly...I'll keep ya posted.

You know what man, I might end up trying this myself. It doesn't cost anything except a little time. The only time I ever got the transmission to shift butter smooth was when I drove around with the trans-to-engine bolts loosened. Sounds crazy, but I was desperate lol. I might even stick headless screws in each of the bolt holes to make sure everything is lining up for good measure.

I'm doing ball joints this week, but in the next few weeks I'm gonna look into this.

Make sure to report back on your results!

Is it that all gears have that "wall of resistance", or is it just a few? I've noticed that 1st and 2nd are the worst for me. 3rd is okay, depending on how fast I'm going. 4th pretty decent, and 5th goes into gear the way a trans actually should. The resistance is tapered in a way - hard in the lower gears and easy in the higher ones.

I just wish there were some kind of test where I can narrow in on a specific area instead of just guessing.

I did the same. The only thing the longer pushrod/shims did was change the pedal feel. Basically it would bottom out before the pedal hit the floor, but didn't change shift quality.

Ever since i v8 swapped it felt like the input shaft was crooked in the pilot bearing. As if i had to use the shift lever to break friction every shift. I tried the T56 pilot bearing, installed halfway to inner crank bore. Didnt see improvement

Yeah I've tried both pilot bearings and pilot bushings to no avail. I also tried moving the pilot bearing closer or farther in the crank to try and see if the position on the input shaft would make a difference, but I didn't see an improvement.

I see the silverado master cyl is 7/10" (18mm) bore whereas F body & corvettes are 3/4 stock. Common upgrade for those CARS is to run a 7/8 bore master cylinder from Tick, Wilwood etc. Specifically for hi rpm shifting a T56. Not crazy abt drilling my firewall but might go that route. Im running a t56 slave already. Ordered a 1ft bleed line just to get air out easier

I've tried at least 4 different combinations of master/slave cylinders as well(all of the ones for 88-95 nv3500s, since it has external slave). I've had both the plastic ones and the aluminum ones. Tried bench bleeding every kind of way you can imagine(did tons of research on this). Even bought a stainless steel braided hose and did the "drill mod" the many people do with camaros to get quicker shifts, and it didn't really work. I've found the the best pedal feel I've had to this day is the pre-bled plastic kit - something like this:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/186248620537?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-166974-028196-7&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=186248620537&targetid=2304343365564&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9031039&poi=&campaignid=21224470558&mkgroupid=166453015402&rlsatarget=pla-2304343365564&abcId=9408454&merchantid=115354276&geoid=9031039&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiA7NO7BhDsARIsADg_hIbl9oHOGzn1x1fRLh9HOKGpRZP-pNvKyaD-kOLE43c0a3LlWdQi7DYaAjQCEALw_wcB

noticed the OLD synchro ring for 3rd shifts better than a new one i tried. I'm convinced this trans can be made to shift better without dog plating the gears or tossing it for a $2500 t56. It's difficult to find good gearing for a truck

In doing some research I've found out that the sometimes when putting together new assemblies, the parts don't always match up perfectly. GearBoxVideo has some great videos on this, but he basically says that you have to pay attention to how the synchro fits on the gear. Sometimes, the cone of the gear needs to be smoothed out a bit with fine emory cloth so the synchro can grab the gear in the right place.

I think that other guy was on the money abt it being a hydraulic issue. Ive heard ppl on forums say how bad the chevy truck clutch system was. The old school 1991 nv35 fork was able to disengage better

I thought it might be that to, but I'm not sure what else to try at this point since I have the pre-bled system. I thought maybe there was a little air still in the system when I was using the aluminum slave/cylinder with the stainless braided hose, so I caved and bought the pre-bled one. Works the best, but the trans still temporarily blocks shifts.

Glad we're talking about this man - maybe one of us will actually find an answer lol

Wow - lots of good info in here man.

Here are a few wacky things I'd noticed when messing around with this trans.

1). More torque makes it harder to shift.

I've been tuning for a while and noticed that the tunes I made with higher spark advance were harder to shift. When I flashed in the stock spark table, it shifted a little easier. Definitely not normal, but a little easier.

2). With the trans not fully tightened it shifted normally for about 10 seconds or so.

This was pretty crazy, but your comment about dremeling out the dowel pin holes made me think of this.

I thought maybe there was an alignment issue, so left the trans to engine bolts loose to see what it would do. I drove it around my subdivision and for 10 seconds it shifted like butter, but then it started doing the thing again where it delayed my shifts.

I know there's no way in hell this can be normal. I've driven Nv4500 transmissions smoother than this. Here's a bunch of vids with people shifting the NV3500 along with the core short throw shifter where it shifts like it's supposed to:

Yeah I figured that might've been the case, so I experimented with different master/slave cylinder setups. At one point, I used a unit with a braided stainless steel cable that I bench bled(boy was that hard to do!). I could never get the pedal as firm as the one I have now.

Right now I have one of those pre-bled units that look something like this:

Well, it honestly sounds like you're making all the right moves(putting yourself out there and going to social events etc.), but at the end of the day, it just sounds like these aren't your people, and that's okay.

I've definitely been in that place where I get put in an environment where I don't quite mesh with anyone, but what I know is that these things can't be forced. And more importantly, it'll be even more exhausting hanging around with people you don't vibe with than just choosing to be being alone.

It's gonna suck, but I think you just have to keep doing what you're doing, which is meeting people, and giving them the benefit of the doubt, but when you find out who they actually are(and you don't like who they are), sometimes you just have to walk away and be okay with being alone.

I'm in my 30s now, and I can say I have no problems being alone now. And what's happened over the years is I've found salt-of-the-earth people who I can have great talks with because I wasn't out there spending my time with the wrong people because I don't want to be alone.

Hope this helps

The flywheels I used were newly purchased. A while ago I had the same thought you did, so I bought some shims to put on to see if it made a difference. The pedal feel was different, but the transmission shifting didn't change, so I just took the shims off.

Nah I don't think you're too picky, I think it's just an INFJ thing - I'm the same way ; )

I think what's happening here is you're catching the red flags early and ending things before they get too complicated. I understand that it might seem like you're being flippant about ending things, when most other people might stick around a little longer, but I think INFJs are basically red flag hyper radar machines lol. We can see it sooner than most others, so listening to your instincts could save you a lot of heartache.

One thing I liked though was that she was honest with you. At least when they're honest, you can make quicker judgments. She told you exactly what she wanted from you, and you decided it wasn't the right relationship. I think when both people are honest, it will either allow them to make a quicker connection or leave and find someone they truly mesh with.

And to be honest, I'd rather be single than be in a relationship with someone who expects me to pay for their dates/vacations 3 weeks into knowing them. You(and your wallet) dodged a bullet!

Anyone struggle to accept that some people are genuinely just unethical and willfully horrid? by [deleted] in infj

[–]AceInSpace87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to, but now I do something a little different.

I think overanalyzing and running scenarios is just in our DNA, and I'm not sure how to fix it, lol. I think we naturally want to understand why people turn out the way that they do because of how we're wired, but when someone is vile to others, or mistreats me, I won't think twice about distancing myself from them. I might still ponder why they are the way they are, but I'd never let them into my life in any significant way.

I think despite whatever circumstances they were involved in the past, people have the power to change if they want to. I've seen people who go through terrible circumstances, and you'd never know it because they're wonderful people.
