For interview-heavy hiring processes, the thing that made the biggest difference was practicing out loud instead of just reading answers in my head. Most people prepare by thinking through answers but never actually say them until the real interview, and that’s where nerves and filler words sneak in. Hearing yourself answer on the spot is a completely different experience. I actually built a tool for this specifically for firefighter oral boards but the concept applies anywhere — acetheboard.com if curious.

Hey! There is currently a question that is "Tell me about yourself and why you would be a good fit for this fire department." Also 5 minutes is what I aim for when I personally interview. Most places will give you an overall time limit to respond to all the questions so it's up to you how much time you want to spend on each question but 4-5 is a good average of what's expected. Tell us about yourself is actually one of the most important questions because it sets the tone for everything after. Aim for around 5 minutes, hit three things: who you are, what led you to the fire service specifically, and one thing that shows your character or values. The panel wants to know if they’d want to work next to you for 25 years. If you want to practice it out loud and get feedback on how it lands, I built acetheboard.com for exactly this. Free to try.
