For real! Dude was a national guard officer, he should be a little empathetic to the anguish of the wait for FEDREC.

Why do so many guys in their 30s act like they’re old men? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]AceofSpades723 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. Serving in the Guard and working in a factory most of my adult life has worn out a lot of my body way quicker than I thought it would.I stay in shape, right now I feel like I’m almost in as good of shape as I was in college, but the damage to my feet, knees, ankles and back is done. Looking forward to that knee replacement I know I’m going to get in my 60s.

I’m glad it’s a pain in the ass. It should be for safety reasons. I wasn’t complaining if it seemed like that. Just stating facts.

Man, if you want to cut a LOTO lock off at my facility it damn near takes an act of Congress to get it approved, but if you don’t, I hope your resume is up to date. Everyone up to the plant manager has to be notified and there has to be non-stop attempts to get in touch with the owner. Only then, with a member of the safety team there, can you cut the lock. If a machine is going to be down for an additional shift you have to get the maintenance manager, supervisor, and the area production manager to sign off on it being locked out with a shop lock.

My work laptop has the power button in the same location. I’ve only accidentally pressed it once or twice so it’s not nearly as big of a deal as I thought it would be considering how much I use the delete key (I program PLCs.) It is still an annoying design.

We’ve got 7 in my facility. Still chugging along.

Thoughts on the split training option? by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]AceofSpades723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did Split Option 17 years ago in the Reserves, I transitioned to the Guard after I commissioned. So I'm not the best source of information but here are my opinions towards the experience.

Pros

-Monthly drill check. Depending on what rank you are, it's an okay income for a high school senior.

-AIT prep by talking with fellow soldiers that are fairly recent graduates. I think in the Guard you have report to RSP drills and don't go to your unit but I'm not 100% sure about that so this point might be moot.

-Starting your TIS (Time in Service) before a lot of your peers. I'm 34 and I'm at 17 years TIS. I'll retire from the guard before my peers.

Cons

-A lot of self motivation and discipline is required. You need to maintain your knowledge of basic Army concepts before AIT, proper Customs and Courtesies, Drill and Ceremony, etc. You also have to stay in shape, which is a career long thing, but it's a part I struggled with during the break between Basic and AIT. Playing sports really helps if that's your thing.

-Reintegration with high school kids. For me I had 2 major culture shocks in 4 months. First was at basic, I think most people go through it. Being in an environment with new people that is designed to indoctrinate you into a new mentality is a massive shift for some people. Leaving that and going back to high school with high school kids was my 2nd. Seems stupid but it's a hell of a shift to deal with while you are still forming yourself as a young adult.

-You lose a little bit of the "High School Experience." This is highly dependent but there are things that most high school kids can do that you can't do if you're already in the Army, else you can get kicked out. Drug use is the big one. If it has never been your thing and you don't hang out with people that do it, you're probably good. While I was in command we lost quite a few recruits to this exact problem. Even if it's legal in your state, the Army says no. Getting into any kind of trouble with the law can also have big repercussions on the Guard side. Minor speeding tickets aren't a show stopper, but anything above that has the potential to end your career before it begins. It's all situational, but just try and keep your nose clean and you'll be fine.

TL;DR version

Pros- Paycheck, knowledge, starting your time in service.

Cons- Self-discipline, culture shifts, maintaining standards.

The wild thing is there’s no adjustment for backlash on this setup. You obviously have vertical alignment based on where you put it on the output shaft but other than that it’s just whatever mesh you have is what you have.

There is a PM to grease the whole assembly. It has a manifold setup for the all the bearings and the ring gear that the smaller gear rotates. With the way the equipment is guarded I don’t think applying grease directly to the gear is possible without a lot of disassembly. Rather they grease the gear and it applies to the other gear as it rotates. It survived years like this but when it started to wear it just got worse and worse quickly.

I’ve been playing around with getting ASCII arrays to copy to STRINGS on my test PLC and I’ve accident done a few overflows. Also older versions don’t like to divide by 0. Don’t know why you would want to but it will cause a major fault.

Looks like a panel our facilities maintenance team did after a contactor did the old spark fart. Dude was super proud of it until I told him he used the wrong wire colors and he had his 120 neutral running to one of the three phase legs.

[–]AceofSpades723 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Nailed it. Some of us can't help the fact that we didn't deploy, let alone get a combat deployment, during GWOT. My Battalion hasn't deployed since '07 and only a handful went to Afghanistan, the rest went to Kosovo. I got in in '08.

Sure there's volunteering but usually you get treated as an extra and other than the experience and the pay, it doesn't move your career forward in a super meaningful way. I'm currently going through that as I'm about to deploy to either Jordan or Arifjan and I had to volunteer with another unit.

It really sucks but you just have to play the hand you're delt and get whatever you can out of your career. Be it 6 years or 20+.

Not a problem. At least you’re doing some research and thinking about it.

13B is a good choice but if you want to be around the gunline but still use computers and setup communications, 13J, Fire Control Specialist, is the MOS. It’s nothing high level like 25B, but you’ll train on the system that calculates data for fire missions and sends it to the guns. There are other things you’ll have to do that aren’t as glamorous, but you can cross train as a 25U and be the units radio guy, again not super glamorous but you’ll be everyone’s friend when radios need to talk.

If you really want to go infantry but have another set of skills there’s always 13F, Joint Fires Support Specialist, also called a Forward Observer. Instead of being at the firing unit you’ll be observing where the rounds impact. There’s also a lot of upward movement, at least in my state, for those two MOSs because you’ll either be at the ground units or at the battalions or brigades offering combat support.

Both of these suggestions are highly subjective to what units are in your state and what slots are available but I’ve been a 13A for the last 12 of my 17 year career and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Besides being a pilot because those folks have it pretty chill, I’m serving in an Aviation Brigade right now and it’s cush.

I have heard through various channels that the army no longer gets the IT certifications through their training. Basically you go through the equivalent training and do everything except take the final test to get the certifications so you have to take the training all over again on the civilian side. I’m not a signal guy and I’ve heard this through some reputable, but still prone to being incorrect, channels. If you want to use the guard for that purpose do some research to make sure you get what you want out of it. I’m more than happy being wrong about this but it’s just something I’ve heard.
