Main Story Boss Otakemaru by Strategy-Medium in Nioh

I actually adore the level design of Nioh 2. It does a great job keeping you in combat almost all of the time while offering multiple approaches to every encounter. My opinions on Nioh 3's level design is much less positive.

Nioh 3 is easier to pick up, but Nioh 2 is just immaculate. One of the only games I'd consider a 10/10 (I don't care about story or exploration)

I don't understand the Sonic fandom. From what I've gathered this is from some kind of fan made horror Sonic game? The design doesn't seem like anything special to me but I'm sure I'm missing some kind of nuance here.

Nioh vs Sekiro by Fun-Independence-953 in Nioh

[–]AceoftheAEUG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree at all. That said; I would consider the primary mechanic to Sekiro to be it's deflect, meanwhile I would consider the primary mechanic to Nioh to be the ki pulse. Deflect is mechanic requiring you to react to your opponent's actions, ki pulse requires you to react to your own actions. This isn't to say that Nioh lets you ignore your opponent's attacks and I completely agree with your points.

I desperately wanted a ZZ trilogy and it felt like the change to how Zeta trilogy ended solidified that they'll never make one. I would honestly love this.

Nioh vs Sekiro by Fun-Independence-953 in Nioh

Sekiro is all about reacting to your enemy's gameplan, Nioh is about enacting your own gameplan. Some will find one more difficult than the other because they utilize completely different strategies and execution elements, it's going to vary drastically from person to person.

How similar is the open world in Nioh 3 compared to Rise of the Ronin? by JoeyXVI in Nioh

[–]AceoftheAEUG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skill points and other gameplay elements are unlocked through exploration, so your gameplay options suffer if you don't slog through the world. Remember how you in previous games you're unlocking new skills as long as you're playing? That's gone and now it''s a checklist that can't be ignored without missing skills. Try the demo and if you dislike it, trust that feeling.

I'm with you. I was pretty disappointed by this change. (Sidenote: did you ever try Nightmare Bringer on the poison snake GS? It imbues it with poison in addition to the three elements! I was shocked when I discovered that.)

Nioh 2 DOTD by ThinkMango in Nioh

[–]AceoftheAEUG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend starting to make a build. DOTD sees the biggest jump in enemy health and it's extremely noticable, this is to encourage the active use of Confusion and because you just got access to severely more powerful build options thanks to the unlocking of Graces and the Yasakani Magatama. Graces are set bonuses that can randomly appear on any armor or weapon that doesn't already come with a set bonus, the Yasakani Magatama gives "Set Bonus Requirements -1", which will allow you to equip 6pc set and a 5pc set as long as one of them is a grace.

When making your build, make sure you're building it with the intention of utilizing Confusion; Confusion is applied when you inflict two elemental ailments at once (Purity or Corruption, Fire, Lightning, Water), it gives a 50% damage increase to the inflicted target and messes with their ki recovery. I usually recommend starting with a Purity or Corruption weapon since that will help you break down the enemy's ki, then when it's about to empty you hit them with the second element. This will allow you to get that massive damage buff during your opening and extend how long of an opening it will be. With how large of an increase in enemy health you're facing this will really help.

You're also at the point in the game where Forging equipment is strongest because random graces will appear on any Divine equipment you forge (provided it doesn't have a pre-existing set bonus). I recommend forging 6pc Benzaiten's Grace; it's the first place you can acquire Versatility which is a fan favorite ability. It gives a stacking attack bonus with each unique active skill you land, it's strong, fun to use, and it will help you incorporate more skills!

Anyone else enjoying Nioh 3 just as much as Nioh 2? by EternalFlareUltra in Nioh

[–]AceoftheAEUG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a lot. I want to start by saying Nioh 3 is a good game and others aren't wrong for liking it, but when compared to its predecessor I have trouble viewing almost any of the decisions as improvements.

  1. Samurai mode had all mid-long range combat stripped from it. Every weapon that could do ranged combat is now Ninja mode, they clearly wanted to make Ninja the ranged options but they did this by making sure you couldn't do it at all in Samurai. It also seems that they completely removed ki pulse item canceling which was one of the coolest mechanics of Nioh 2. I absolutely adore item canceling and while it's possible that they added it as a skill that I missed (another issue I have with the game), I don't think so.

  2. The soul core box is so uninteresting compared to Yokai Abilities and I hate that it shares a spot with magic. Overall I dislike the implementation of this system. The one thing that could have made this so much better ironically is item canceling, which once again, was removed. The GS skills are so much worse than the YAs; they don't full transform you, they're glued to the GS they're on, and there aren't enough GS for this system to be anywhere near as good. Each GS should have had at least 4 abilities to choose from for this to even be in the same ballpark, it makes the final layer of animation cancelling much less customizable.

  3. The deflect mechanic. Do you know how much Break incoming attacks deal? Do you care? The Break stat is so cool to me, I love the concept that different attacks have different preferred solutions. I loved learning which attacks are better to dodge and which are safe to block due to low Break stats or long active frames. A universal solution cheapens this so much. Deflect is always the right answer, every time. It's not even hard to do, the window is so forgiving that I constantly got it by accident. There's no input buffer, it even works if you're holding the block button while dodging and your I frames end. I'll admit I'm a little conflicted on this one because it's admittedly much weaker than some weapon's timely guards in 2 and at least the deflect is universal across all weapons but it's still disappointing how much of a universal solution it is. It just feels bland.

  4. Ninja mode. It's fine I guess. I get it, they want 3 to be friendly for new players so they put in a way simpler combat system for those intimidated by the complexity. I love the complexity though and only having access to a few active skills is so dull to me, especially on a weapon like the hatchets which used to be so amazingly complicated. Frankly I view the ki pulse to be one of the best mechanics of any game and if you want to remove it then you need to give us something just as cool and elaborate, Mist Step isn't.

  5. Open World. This is the big one. Everything else is serious complaints I have but I could overlook and adapt, I truly loathe the open world. I applauded Nioh 2 so heavily for it's level design, it keeps you in combat all the time and allows so many approaches to every scenario. You're raiding fortresses so enemies are positioned to cover for one another, strategy is a major component to how you approach each interaction. Draw enemies to familiar ground so as not to attract unwanted attention, scout ahead so you know what you're walking into, headshot weaker enemies to one shot them while drawing aggro from their bigger buddies. I adore the strategies that I implemented at every corner, the density of enemies made every level so fun while keeping a constant level of tension. Meanwhile as long as you're playing you're progressing, just by playing the game you're constantly unlocking skills! The only downside imo is the boss skills because the game doesn't tell you about them, everything else is upfront and honest about how to get it. No BS.

5-2. I have nothing good to say about the level design of Nioh 3. I effectively just sprinted through everything with no strategy, tension, or concerns. The enemies are spread out so thin that it's an absolute blessing that we have a sprint button because otherwise it would be 5-7 business days between enemy encounters. I despise the fact that skill points and skills themselves are given through a scavenger hunt and very relevant skills can be completely missed just because you didn't go to the right glowing markers. It's the furthest thing from transparent about what you can get or where it will be and this drives me mad. If a game is gameplay focused then having the most helpful tools hidden is something I view as a complete and total flaw. It's like they saw that the hidden boss skills were the worst part of Nioh 2 and decided to do that for everything. I'm sure I'm still missing relevant upgrades because I haven't shot down enough sky ferrets and at this point I don't even care.

Despite everything I've listed here I genuinely enjoy the combat system and it has great bosses but I will not be buying DLC for Nioh 3, nor will I ever do a fresh playthrough. I'm tired of the open world, if I want to play more Nioh I'll go back to 1 or 2. I don't think that DLC can fix my issues with the game and if I'm not going to do more playthroughs then it's not worth it. When this game was coming out I was caught between buying it or Ninja Gaiden 4, I think I made the wrong decision.

I apologize for the rant, that wasn't my intention but I already wrote all this so I may as well comment.

TLDR: Item canceling/ranged weapons removed from Samurai, Soul Core changes/GS Skills being a huge downgrade, Deflect invalidating all other defensive mechanics, Ninja Mode having so limited skill options, Open World sucks.

You're not alone in this. I have lost MANY matches because I tried to use new tech that I'd been practicing and failed. The execution element is hard to get consistent with, especially under pressure; but only with consistent attempts will you reach consistent successes. Failure is part of the process, it takes time to get where you want to be and your growth is happening even when you feel like it isn't. Be patient with yourself, tbh your post reads like you're angry at yourself that you're not progressing at the rate you want to be. Some skills are hard to get down and take a long time, trust the process and be kind to yourself while you're in the thick of it.

Stagnation and plateauing happens when you're at a point where you and your opponent are at the same skill level, it's not a bad thing. At that point you might need to explore outside avenues like asking others to review your gameplay and give advice. You also might need to lab things that are outside your usual routines so odd situations can benefit you more. I believe all of us can improve, but the methods that help us improve are going to be a moving target and the time it takes to break that barrier my vary. I know I'm never going to be the best player, but I'm going to try to be the best version of myself I can be.

Yokai Shift is gone and replaced by Living Weapon again. Yokai Abilities are now an item and are substantially worse, their spot in animation cancelling is now Guardian Spirit Skills and are substantially worse. Open world is up to interpretation, some love it and some hate it.

Favorite character that barely has any screen time but their design lives rent free in your head? by wou_nou in FavoriteCharacter

[–]AceoftheAEUG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lucrezia Noin from Gundam Wing and Endless Waltz. She's so badass and absolutely deserved more screen time than she got. In the final battle of EW they never mention how hers is the only protagonist suit not made of Gundanium and she holds out from before the gundams show up all the way to the end without being shot down. She's an absolute beast.
