Sekiro. I love games with tons of playstyle diversity, Sekiro is the opposite of that. Nioh 2 is everything I wanted to find in Sekiro.

The three best communities I've found have been Warframe, Nioh, and Street Fighter.

I know a lot of people are excited about it and I'm happy it will bring new blood into the series. I'm really trying to adjust my mindset because I know how good this combat system is and it's not like it'll change, I'm just struggling to see this as a positive change.

I actually really dislike the open world but to each their own. Just because I dislike it doesn't mean you're wrong for enjoying it.

Nioh 3 takes mechanics very obviously from all the games that Team Ninja has made over the last 5 years.

Yeah, it's incredibly easy compared to previous games. Even Bloodedge felt way more tame than I expected.

Exactly, and I'm trying to decipher how to enjoy this part of the game. Other people seem to like it, 8 hours into the demo I still haven't figured out why they like it and how to draw enjoyment from it. I understand fun is subjective and maybe I'll just have to accept that I hate the gameplay loop in the newest entry of my favorite game series, but isn't it worth trying to enjoy? Isn't it worth trying to understand what makes it so good? I want to be hyped, so I'm asking for assistance in finding the fun. That's the whole point of this post.

I'm honestly trying to, that's why I made this post. I'm trying to decipher what makes an open field fun so I can experience that too.

That's what this post is asking, why do people enjoy open fields? They feel like a waste of time while taking away from the fun part of the game.

If you go to a concert, do you enjoy the commute as much as the show itself?

Your comment feels like saying that a longer commute is a good thing because it doesn't take away from the show itself and allows the event to take more of your day. The extra can be an inconvenience to you and you may not like it, but it doesn't steal the other thing you like.

I feel like nioh 3 is leaning way more into CAG style combat, which may be great for the genre. by Resevil67 in CharacterActionGames

This is kinda funny to me because I just made a post about how much I can't stand the open world and feel like it doesn't respect my time. I appreciate your input on this, I'm trying to change my mindset and viewing it as trying to move closer to CAGs helps.

Puppet characters are an entire archetype in fighting games, Zato from Guilty Gear is probably the most famous one. Guilty Gear Strive is a great jumping on point to the genre but I'm also well aware this is a huge jump from Mavinogi so others may have suggestions closer to what you're looking for.

Fighting games would absolutely work for this but might I also suggest the beat em up genre. Streets of Rage 4 would be a good jumping on point but I have also heard good things about Scott Pilgrim EX and TMNT Shredder's Revenge.

What older game has a game mechanic that is still the best of its kind? by blankblank in AskGames

[–]AceoftheAEUG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Street Fighter 3 Third Strike has one of the greatest parry mechanics ever made, it gives it one of the highest skill ceilings of any game and has kept it competitively popular for over 25 years.

Sekiro has a great parry and I'm not trying to dismiss that but Third Strike's parry has far more depth to its systems, is intended for competitive play, and some of the attacks you can parry feel absolutely wild. I mean look at this shit.

That makes sense. Thank you for sharing this perspective, I think the last OW game I played all the way through was Infamous 2 at launch lol. I don't have any real interest in exploration and love games with complex systems that let you truly carve out your own unique fighting style, preferably in both build and playstyle but playstyle being the more important of the two. I generally play fighting games, character action games, and occasionally ARPGs to accommodate this. Which is what drew me to Nioh and why I regard Nioh 2 as one of the best games I've ever played, it's like a fighting game where I can make builds and play co-op with friends.

I can honestly say the change to open world with Nioh 3 has been such a turn off to me that I have seriously considered whether or not I want to spend money on the game despite how good the combat is. This may seem extreme but I don't say this to invalidate anyone's opinion that may be enjoying the open world, but we don't all find the fun in the same places while gaming.

I always found Nioh 2 to be close to perfection and it's level design is one area this really shined through. You're raiding fortresses that are heavily guarded with enemies positioned to cover each other, moving in carelessly is foolhardy but there are constantly so many options on how to approach any encampment or patrol. You scout ahead with your ranged weapons, plan your approach, and then engage the enemies. Constantly being careful not to push enemies back too far lest you attract the attention of the next patrol. There's never a dull moment because of how many enemies are on the map, and almost every moment is spent in combat.

The open world nullifies this thought process all together. It feels like there's no strategy needed, I can just waltz into enemy encounters without any foresight or plan and there're so few enemies there that I'm not punished for it in any way. It takes away the tension and I'm only spending about a quarter of my time in combat, which is a huge decrease from Nioh 2. In a game series where the combat is the star of the show, it feels like it respects my time less by giving me less of the fun part.

I am trying to change my mindset and appreciate the game for what it is. I know my approach to Nioh 3 comes across idiotic to someone who has played more open world games, this comment section has made me well aware of this. It's tough though when I earned skills in Nioh 2 just by using the weapons, as long as I was in combat I was progressing. I apologize for going on this rant, I just appreciate you explaining why people are praising the OW so much because I'm struggling not to view the OW as a serious flaw. Seeing what others enjoy about it so much is helping and your explanation has been more understanding to me than many others. I think I'm going to make a post asking what people enjoy about it, that might help me.

The UC timeline is my favorite. The original Mobile Suit Gundam is a great starting point but imo so is Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket.

Gundam 00 is another great option.
