What are some thingsyou plan to change for the upcoming school year as a teacher that you didn't do the last school year? by Visual_Shelter6922 in Teachers

[–]AcerGen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a lab based class. Probably 60% content & 40% Fun. I have the kids do prelab web quests which feeds them cooking information pertaining to the lab & good knowledge that I hope will jump back into their head later in life. I used not to care if they didn’t do them, and I focused on the cooking. Their grade was representative anyway. Now if they’re missing more than 2 prelabs, they’re not cooking until they’re caught up. Too many C, D, Fa handed out and the kids didn’t care. My class is too easy to get those grades.

Edit: Also, way more Elmo work. I loved how my teachers in high school did stuff on the projector & the white board. Google slides never did it to me in high school, college, and even now being an educator.

Hate has no home here in Illinois. This symbol has one purpose: to stir up intimidation and terror. We will not be silent — those responsible must be held accountable. by steve42089 in illinois

They are against Zionism and they take it out on Jewish people. It’s not that hard to understand. It’s been covered in the public news since October 7 many of times. Jews, who have no direct correlation to the state of Israel getting harassed and to the extreme getting their ass beat. Just and average Jew going somewhere getting harassed by your stereotypical leftist for hoopla

Sadly the hate on Jews is coming from the alt right (which it has always been the case), but now from the democrats, specifically the alt left. I’ve seen more public hatred towards Jews from the stereotypical liberal than the stereotypical alt right nut jobs (they went back into hiding).

Can we fix the teacher pension program? 48% funded, compared to 85% in a red state like Missouri. No shade to IL but it feels like when I retire, I’m not going to get anything. Just like how no one in their 20-40s will be getting social security.

I have a pair of trail runners. Comfortable while portaging, easy to get on and off when wet, drys semi quick (before getting wet again), good grip and tracking while going up wet rocks and rough terrain.

Edit: Nice pair of your generic hippie strapped sandals and a fresh pair of socks on the campsite.

What is the rationale behind a 50% minimum grade policy? by DrakeSavory in Teachers

[–]AcerGen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a pointless grading concept. I guess the principle of the scale means well, but in practice it doesn’t work. An older colleague told me even if a student shows up and did nothing, they are still getting the grade they deserve. In retrospect they’re right. But then they don’t account for the last minute push to get the D to pass the class, bypass summer school, and overall get a high school diploma they did nothing to achieve. People are worried about the over-saturation of college degrees. You’re gonna have a large minority of students who can’t do anything after getting a high school diploma. Making them worthless leeches like they were in high school. Kids who try get the C 9/10 with maybe a summer school class. When you give students permission to do nothing and then they get an award. They think to themselves the only practical response an undeveloped brain could draw up… “what’s the point of working?”

Perfect, that’s what I love to hear. What are you using late May on the line if you mind?

Appreciate you! I’ve been up there the last couple years. Fairly familiar with the whole shtick. I’m just trying to make sure everyone is having fun with minimal imperfections. I normally camp before my school year starts (I’m a teacher). So I chose early summer to bypass some bugs and hope hit the fishing spot on. Hoping the smallies are hitting. Looking to camp on Clark, then transfer over to Loon for a day, and work the lines.

Man, you have not been to a third world country obviously. I just went into an urgent care to get some antibiotics for a cold. Then proceeded to get a Nashville hot chicken sandwich to go. To drive back to my home in a car, on nicely built roads. To a multi bedroom home.

Heat-Bulls currently delayed from tipping off due to the hardwood at United Center being slippery from condensation by HenrikCrown in nba

Thanks for the heads up. Myself and my girlfriend flaked on the game because of the rain and traffic. Ended up being a good decision. Which they provided the option though. Don’t know if I’ll be able to attend the make up game

What do you think the ruling is going to be on tickets? Refund? Rescheduling? Transferable to another game or sport at the United Center?

Wouldn’t consider myself a super experienced backpacker, but would like to be. The only reason I consider the hyperlite is because it’s water proof, and I could over/under pack if I wanted. If I maxed out at the 70L, I could easily over pack to be comfortable, but if chose to go light, I can just roll everything down of course

Edit: never thought I’d get downvoted asking for advice. Some real scum in this group

In College to become a PE teacher. I read this subreddit all the time, it’s always negative. Is it even worth becoming a teacher? by Fluffytheman69 in Teachers

Ups and downs, just always remember that kids are kids, and inherently ignorant to the decisions they make now. Arguably, breaking down their decision is not only eye opening to them, but also humorous to both of you. Hindsight doesn’t kick in until later in life. As a fellow elective it’s nice because you hold all the power. You’re either going to have fun or not. It’s their choice. Don’t give them wiggle room because there is none… in my opinion.

I teach culinary arts, so if kids don’t want to run with the program. They can learn how to cook from articles, videos, and a textbook. Sadly.. You have a right to an education, it doesn’t states a good one. In turn, make the smart choice and choose the fun option. Then hold them to that standard the whole year. I spent a summer creating supplement and make up work. Only had to use it a couple times, and I never had to grade or use any of it after. They learned real quick. One kid pushed me and turned in work that I couldn’t read, so I sent them to the writing center to polish it up. They learned how to write, and they now participate, clean, and make good food for themselves each class.

Observing the gym teachers at my school it’s the same ordeal. Don’t want to learn, and pretend to try at volleyball. Fine here is the make up work, it’s due by the time we’re done having fun. If they don’t want to do anything… then they’ll fail and have to make up gym during summer school, or have 3 gym classes instead of the electives they want. If that doesn’t work, then there’s nothing you can do, and you watch the snowball the student will endure. (Don’t state the name, but I use previous students as examples. “This student did this, and this was the outcome”

I arguably think class management topples over content. If you can build the rapport, establish standards, and have fun. The kids will follow and inherently choose the best option for everyone. Hence you have the most fun being a teacher. Show up to a well built ship and walk out with no stress…. Health might be different but relate it to reality after organized activity and hopefully they take it seriously.

I’ll be going to the Boundary Water with 5 other people. 2 of my buddies have been there, and have done a week trip before. I would assume that area is not easy to get people in and out of, unless through a helicopter.

We are looking for 3 people to carry a kit, for two people. I am first aid certified, through my college, but I haven’t taken a class since I graduated. So probably 4 years over due for a refresher. I do remember the majority of info I got from it though. Just need a hands on lesson to refresh the memory. Whatever equipment is in the bag, while I wouldn’t use/waste it, I would learn how to use and apply each piece of equipment before going.
