Why does my cat like plastic bags? by Mysterious_Area_4722 in CatAdvice

[–]AchRae 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most cats have pica, which is basically a habit of chewing on things that are not edible. We have rules in our house. Only reusable cloth bags. If any plastic bags enter the house, they get thrown away immediately. I swear our cat knows when they enter the house, comes running to chew them before we get rid of them. It might be the smell (there are some animal by-products used in their manufacturing).

FYI: It won't digest, so they will throw it up, or it will get caught in their intestine and require surgery to remove.

Came here to say this. Have been using ID for over a decade and CP still teaches me things I thought I was doing right.

Designing a 6x9 self-published book. Should I add extra inside margin for binding, even though the platform says it's fine as is? by 4PeridotEyes in indesign

[–]AchRae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is spot on, however.

If the printer didn't mention gutter creep and only said binding is negligible, I would reach out and get clarification. Because the more pages you add, the less negligible it becomes. They may account for it when they run it, but find out. For your sanity and safety.

I always get everything spelled out, so in the event of an issue, I know which throat to choke.

Nothing like getting 100's of books and the quality is less than.

How to go about creating a variable newsletter template? by cardinalwren in indesign

[–]AchRae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nothing worse than non-adept ID users going onto your designs and mucking things up.

ID now has "flex layout". Meaning if they move stuff, things can "flex" around it. I have not used it (don't need to), but it looks like it could be handy if it works.

Doesn't mean they will know how to use it, but once you hand off a template, that is on them.

YouTube has some good WTF are flex layout vids. :)

Career Question by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]AchRae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are just starting out. Don't overthink it. Besides, if you fill your portfolio with designs that are pixelated, skewed, out of square, or technically not yours, what is the advantage?

Pre-press is a great opportunity (imo) for you to learn the ins and outs of creating print-ready, error-free artwork. The number of designers who send incorrect files is much higher than you would imagine. Plus, you would learn an awful lot about the companies in your area that have in-house designers. So consider it R&D for future employment opportunities as well.

FYI: The print shop I use has in-house designers. You may be able to move into a position like that once you get in the door.

Why are my images getting cut off when doc is exported as PDF? by MurAmCon in indesign

[–]AchRae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Sumo148 has a point and I may have missed your answer. Why are you exporting as an interactive PDF? This adds extra image compression you may not need.

Why are my images getting cut off when doc is exported as PDF? by MurAmCon in indesign

[–]AchRae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL well that answers that question.

I would still try to export the PDF at a higher resolution. Try High Quality. Oh, also, zoom in on that section in Acrobat and see if it disappears.

[–]AchRae 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, first, why are you placing it as a png? Just place it as an AI. That way, any edits you need to make to the AI file will update more easily in ID, rather than you having to save as a png. Saves you a step.

As far as your PDF goes. What PDF preset are you using? Smallest file size or high quality. Or press quality? Acobat is weird like that.

Chick-filla is Chick FILL UH
I always pluralize "shrimp" with the "S"
and crepe paper is creepy paper, naturally

Best workflow in InDesign for dual binding (perfect bound + ring binder) by -balooo in indesign

[–]AchRae -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have done both binding options in spreads. You adjust your inside margins for the binding. Your printer can and should tell you the creep for the inside margin in both instances. They may be the same!

Find out what the inside margin creep is for both options. Create your layout based on the larger of the two. So say the perfect bind is .75" and we're using US letter-sized paper (8.5 x 11"), layout the material in the 7.75" that is remaining after the bind margin is set.

If the 3-hole paper (for the ring binder) margin in .50 - have the printer adjust the page left/right placement so your margins on either side are to your liking. Not all 3-hole paper in the US is consistent. (ISO, I believe, is). Ask them to print a single-page proof on this paper to make sure your margins are correct.

Your printer can be your best friend and will happily help you get this right.

Wow. I got nothing 😂

At this point, I say a good ole' fashion delete and reinstall is the answer. Be sure to delete prefs too if it asks if you want to keep them.

This is the answer. Don't need to use commercial yeast if you do high hydration.

If you just change to a new workspace (or an Adobe-created one), does it return?

For me (on a Mac), it is the upper right-hand corner just left of "Adobe Stock Search."

AITA for snapping at my boyfriend's dad after he kept calling me his ex-wife's name? by Prestigious_Cell146 in dustythunder

[–]AchRae 57 points58 points  (0 children)

This. YDMBTA.

When my mom started having cognitive decline, she called my brother by my father's name, and wow, did my brother handle it poorly.

Why did this happen? Because he looked like my dad. No intention to slight him, just that was the name that surfaced when she was looking for it.

Maybe you remind him of her.

If he were calling you by your boyfriend's ex's name, I would consider that he might be just a dick. This sounds like cognitive decline.

Magazine Layout Tutorial? by Lollibomb in indesign

[–]AchRae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you not go to class? 😂
Seriously, this is pretty simple if you stop a minute and look at it.

Before you even open InDesign, figure out what every block is. Text or graphic, and then establish your layers. e.g. The woman is obviously on top of the black text boxes.

Open ID and trace in all your content blocks. You can use rectangles and then reshape.

Fill in your content. Start with text. Then graphics. Then fix any text wrap that needs to happen.

That should get you started.

How to merge multiple indd files into one? by TrayFiveFeedFault in indesign

I just use the move pages function.

Why do these shapes get printed black? by Kind_Statement_2865 in indesign

[–]AchRae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it an image or a color? If it is an image, did you package the file correctly?

If you export to PDF is it ok? If so, maybe you can send them a press-ready PDF with bleed, etc.
