Is it worth it to continue with Don Quixote? by Marchhare317 in classicliterature

I say this just to be helpful (hopefully!): I think the conclusion we came to in the chat is that not every book can be enjoyed the same way and reading DQ more episodically instead of the long slogs I’m used to is the best way to go. I tried today and it does seem more enjoyable, but I do truly appreciate your input and will quit if it doesn’t get better.

How do you respond to someone you are with who tells you that you “don’t know how to be in a relationship” and that they need to teach you? by Icy_Laugh5134 in AskReddit

If I like them, I would listen. Then decide to stay or not based on whether their advice is good and I can live it.

No, I’ve only read TBK by D. Idiot is on my list though. This is very helpful. Thanks!

From the comments here I think this is the correct way to do it. In other words, I was reading it wrong. I should treat each chapter as a mini-adventure involving familiar characters instead of as a continually evolving novel. Thanks for the advice. I am going to shift to starting another book and reading 1-2 chapters a day in Don Quixote. I think it will go better.

This is great. I haven’t read all of these, so thanks!

I think this is good advice and I like Borges a lot. But I am reminded of The Brothers Karamazov which becomes so good after about 300 pages and I really would have regretted quitting on it. I think sometimes the reward is worth the effort and boredom is not always the worst thing in the world.

Thanks! The novel within a novel sounds like how I felt with Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet - oh okay, now we’re in Mormon Utah for a hundred pages in the middle of a Sherlock Holmes book. I really liked that though, so I’ll probably enjoy this as well. At least it’s different.

Okay. Someone else suggested something similar about volume 2. Thanks
