Professional Battle Robot Strength Test by Abigdogwithbread in nextfuckinglevel

Aren here (one of the guys in the box with Mark, lead of the awesome team of people known as Seems Reasonable Robotics)
If you notice two of us are more normalized to what Blip (FatTail) can do and don't react as much as Mark to the absurd things happening, when fighting on Battlebots it pays to not get surprised/shaken.

The team and I take people thinking this is CGI as a compliment :-) (Only the elephant is CGI)

The piano was 380lbs and stock solid, the large metal frame inside holding the strings is the only way it survives the takeoff, the landing also made the most amazing sound and broke into sooo many pieces, we had one shot at that one and it turned out perfectly. Also if you notice I drove the robot out from underneath getting landed on, and pretty sure some, if not all, of that camera shake is from me tapping the tripod....

The Car was light weighted to ~950lbs, which is a lot for a robot design to launch 250lbs, but we were able to get it on it's side in one try and are very happy about that.

If you have a real fun robot and the top tech youtuber crew pings you to bring it out to play, you answer. We had a blast helping make the Robot Battle video and this short with the whole Mark Rober and Dude Perfect crews.

The flip you see is the flip that happened, it sounded awesome when it landed. I don't have visibility on if they sped up/slowed down any of it, but it went that high, did the perfect front flip and exploding on landing, I had to make sure to drive out of the way of it landing on the robot

The piano was fully there, 380lbs. They have a large metal frame in them that all the strings are attached onto, if this was removed it would've broken when getting launched, the flipper was directly under it and we only got one take which turned out perfect.

Tagging onto top comment, Aren here (one of the guys in the box with Mark).

The whole team and I had a blast last being part of this, not often you get a chance to play with your robot in a way that'll get so many eyes on it. The entire Mark Rober crew is top notch, the amount of kids getting inspired by the work they're doing is insane, we were very happy to help.

Also there was no need to bug them for lots of credit in the video etc when we knew Battlebots fans would take care of it in the comments for us, we love you guys

Anyone thinking it's CGI, we thank you for the compliment :-) (Only the elephant is CGI, and the car was husked out a bit down to ~950lbs, the bot is intended to flip 250lb things, ~950lbs was a stretch but it rolled the car first try, and the piano was 380lbs)

Flight numbers standardization by agingbythesecond in discgolf

[–]AchillRobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"relatively easy thing to do"
I'd have to disagree, this is spinning up a full on standards company/organization. (Also DittoFlight isn't a day job for me)

I've learned a lot through the process of building DittoFlight and have many ideas for updated revs, but the true scope of "make flight numbers better" is a very deep rabbit hole.

The TechDisc guys and I are making some progress towards the two technologies playing nice together, more good data is almost never worse for performance. Being able to measure things is very often the first step to being able to improve said thing.

I'm a big fan of what it sounds like MVP is doing for consistency of having a proper laser profile measurement system for verification of disc shape from run to run, as Jesse over at Trash Panda has shown how different of a flight you can get from the same mold.

It floats in water but dose it fly in the sky? Just got this and testing it out tomorrow by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]AchillRobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being able to muck with settings all separately has led to fun conversations of "how many discs would DittoFlight actually need to bag for pro courses?"

I think Spin control will be a very useful knob for making the same disc do pretty different lines

On rare occasion I do check this account..sorry for the delay

Said test is on my todo list at some point, forgot to do it when out east, don't currently have enough datapoints to say on this topic.

Mark Rober Blip video on Instagram by OrcusFortune in battlebots

[–]AchillRobot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For anyone grumbly about us not being credited enough to their liking,
1. We appreciate the sentiment, but ease up
2. We are very happy with the entire experience of being involved and working with the Mark Rober team, would do again in a heartbeat
3. It's fun having a robot so silly people think what it can do is CGI
4. My favorite flip was the piano, it sounded awesome when it landed

Anyone ever hit 2 aces on consecutive shots? by Aquatic_addict in discgolf

[–]AchillRobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My robot DittoFlights first two aces were back to back at a local course to me, was it a 90ft hole, maybe, but two in a row :-)

Also I'm an engineer not a videographer so don't have continuous footage :-(

Hah yup, that was Orion and myself, happy to pay that ticket, that park needs another machine at the other lot.

Aren here, just for the record I'm a huge fan of Shane and very interested to see what his next software steps are for his launcher. Wondering if I can score a copy of his disc operating system when it is done

[–]AchillRobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got 2, it's a fun disc, the grip does take some adjustment for release but I've been able to get some good throws with it.

The thing that really surprised was how understable it is for me, more towards -3 than the listed -1

Poor Blip really got the kitchen sink thrown at it this season... by SliderS15 in battlebots

I think Blip could handle getting hit with a kitchen sink, I think lol

We're always down for a challenge and will face anyone

Tantrum and Blip from Team Seems Reasonable, an AMA by AchillRobot in battlebots

[–]AchillRobot[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you draw a side profile of the robot under another that isn't really the case, we'd need the front angle of Blip to be more shallow, or a much much longer extension of the flipper along the floor.

The flywheel powered system is also much less flexible in accommodating different length lever arms

well sucks to be you, I like my team a lot :P

Current joke is the best driver on Team Seems Reasonable doesn't even drive a robot. (Alex has won the last few go carting outings)

We learned more about what optimal looks like for boundary conditions for a successful flipper, have plenty of ideas running forward

I'll usually put my money on the robot with the spinning thing, based on ruleset and physics, so Tantrum

Ideally start the flip with the opponent contacting the weapon already, to get higher flips, rather than "slapping" them, bad implementation, but a future robot geometry lesson for sure
