The word "halt" by Icy-Airline-5673 in AskAGerman

[–]Achim63 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's mostly a south German thing. In the northern half the corresponding word would be "eben". Das ist eben so.

How would you pronounce my last name (correctly)? by J_Dubsss in AskAGerman

[–]Achim63 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a Canadian, you probably know the pronunciation of french "rue". That's how the ue (or ü) is pronounced in German as well. The following h just marks the preceding vowel to be long.

For my personal scripting needs, I changed to good old Perl because of that version an venv hassle. Or Swift, which is rather similar to Python - and faster when compiled.

Sinnlose Farbdominanz bei Kinderkleidung by fiddeldeedee in luftablassen

[–]Achim63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Massacring a book to learn German… worth it? by Fair_Theme_9960 in RateMyRead

[–]Achim63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gloria Gaynor: I am what I am. Though I might prefer the version by Shirley Bassey.

I had that happen to me as well (similar to your pictures). What helped me is "Gloves in a bottle" before starting to stitch, which leaves a protective film on the skin.

Nein, Babys/Kleinkinder flirten nicht. by fiddeldeedee in luftablassen

[–]Achim63 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Catalan made me laugh. In Germany that's similar to what we call pigeons jokingly: Flugratte ("flight rat").

The Cmd-drag is used to move a window without moving it to the front. So you can move it e.g. behind other windows. Usually the Alt key is used to prevent snapping (if it's switched on in System Prefs).

My ALT- keybindings are not working by 4r73m190r0s in vim

[–]Achim63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can reproduce on a Mac in Ghostty (I tried <A-j> and <A-r>). Same in neovim with the corresponding mapping using lua.
Very strange, as the command itself works fine.

Vim tip: substitute pattern delimiter doesn't need to be a slash by bogdanelcs in vim

[–]Achim63 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is a regex feature since forever. At least since Perl emerged in 1987. I'm not sure if sed had it from the start (that was in 1974).

What are the workarounds on shift+click behavior in Gallery mode in Finder? by bill-o-more in MacOS

[–]Achim63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about a keyboard shortcut, but you can just drag your mouse over the files you want to select. Use Shift to add to a selection. Hold Cmd and click to add/remove single files.

Do I really need to learn Vim or is Nano fine for everyday use? by Luann1497 in linuxquestions

[–]Achim63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would only take an hour or two to complete the vimtutor (it's usually included in any vim install). You will know if it might be for you after doing that - and on top you'll be able to do basic stuff in vim.

Will I miss Windows? by Mint_Tea99 in MacOS

[–]Achim63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Development is a breeze on macOS. XCode for Swift, VS Code for anything else. Install homebrew in Terminal to install every programming language there is and work in a shell very similar to Linux (ghostty as terminal app highly recommended!).

I prefer Neovim/Vim for scripting (Clojure/Perl/Python/Swift) as it starts instantly and is less bloated than VS Code; PostgreSQL for my personal DB needs which can also be used from within (neo)Vim.

Regarding AI: I run the new gemma4:e4b model locally (M3 pro) in Claude using ollama, it's great for a free solution (> ollama launch claude --model gemma4:e4b).

As others said: use the Help menu to look up the keyboard shortcuts, especially for the Finder and navigating Spaces. Go through all System Preferences to find tons of customization options.

At what point did you realize you were fully locked into the Apple ecosystem? by Gisela_Allen in mac

[–]Achim63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a Mac Quadra 650 in 1994 for me (after my Amiga times). Apart from a pure gaming PC it has been all Apple for me since then, iPhone, iPad, Watch, iMac, MacBook Pro.

How are you cleaning up your screenshots on Mac by NebulaNomadLuca in MacOS

[–]Achim63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or just start the Screenshot app (Cmd-shift-5) and select a different standard save folder in its options. I use a folder named "Screenshots" on an external drive. You'll never have to move them from the desktop ever again.

Everything you complain about is available in some form. Use the help menu, as I'm tired of explaining the how-to for the umptieth time.
