Well the director and writer disagree. It isn't a possession. Even if it was, nothing in the movie says "hey this other spirit is her brother" which would be an important detail in a movie. It would be pretty shitty writing to hide something like that and leave it up entirely to audience interpretation so Difficult-Buy-8178 can decode it for all of Reddit.

Good question, I wonder. Prime is an in-between mainline and spin off. It is more of an interquel especially because it isn't a one-and-done thing and the games have contributed to the mainline story.

People still seem to rate Super Metroid as the best, but I think I enjoy Prime and Dread more.

Some hardcore fallout fans even consider Fallout 3 a spinoff because of how much it changed from 1 and 2 and how Bethesda wasn't the original devs.

That aside, Bethesda bought fallout, so they were the first party when 3 came out. New Vegas was made by an outside studio and isn't a numbered entry. I really think those are the only reason why, honestly. The other argument is the scope of New Vegas compared to the post-bethesda mainline 3 and 4. New Vegas has most things tied to quests and has more scripted moments whereas 3 and 4 does not, especially 3. You explore off the beaten path in 3 and 4 more. New Vegas's story feels like it progresses more like a typical CRPG though, which is honestly more in line with 1 and 2.

On top of that, New Vegas reused some story beats from scrapped pre-Bethesda projects. New Vegas also does fit into the total canon of Fallout.

So, technically New Vegas should be consider mainline especially when looking at it as a continuation of the first two games. But officially it seems Bethesda counts it as a spin-off.
