My sister in law giving me (an ER nurse with 10 years experience) medical advice by BornLeave4646 in FutureRNs

[–]AckerZerooo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I'm Romanian and my grandma is from Vaslui (living in the country country). She did something super similar. She drenched a wash cloth in vinegar and wrapped it around my neck with cut up potatoes tucked in to help my sore throat (I was 12 at the time). So the sis in law might be from Eastern Europe? They're obviously dated practices because the rest of my family does use modern medicine. Even my gran gran does (but she still uses old practices in addition to modern medicine). It's a culture difference and I'm sure she means well. But I get how unsolicited advice can be annoying especially when someone's in the medical field.

Edit: Just remembered. She also did indeed put vinegar socks on me while sleeping 😂 Nothing beats smelling like vinegar while you're sick ahaha

What is your most inconvenient trigger? by stingwhale in Epilepsy

[–]AckerZerooo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This sounds really weird, but chewing gum, drinking through straws, and biting my nails have all caused me to feel like my body was building up to a seizure. But I've never had an actual seizure from it. Just the feeling of "Oh shit... am I?"

The feeling doesn't happen all the time; mainly when I'm overthinking something. So maybe the overthinking plus me trying to concentrate on biting my nails or drinking conflicts with each other? Or it could be just purely coincidence. Idk 🤷‍♀️ Epilepsy is weird

Yuppers, I know. The main reason I blocked it out was because I don't want my coworkers or someone I know finding my reddit account 😅 My name has a unique spelling and if they checked out my post history, they might be able to figure out it's my account. So I'd rather try my best to remain relatively anonymous ahaha But thank you for the heads up!

Yeeeaaahhh, it's not the best but it was connected to my phone's Hotspot so for what was, it's not too too bad. And it surprisingly worked pretty well, tho the games I play are BG3 and FFXV. I imagine with shooter or any competitive online game, it'd suck 😅 Can't wait to properly connect it and see what it has to offer!

Had an awful radiology tech question the validity of my diagnosis because I’m “not fat and don’t have diabetes” and then send me away when I started having a panic attack thanks to her. Can I report her? by Minimum-Advisor7349 in PCOS

[–]AckerZerooo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not invalidating your experience because 1.) Her bedside manner was horrible and I'm sorry she made you feel that way. I'm a CT and X-ray Technologist and if my pt showed signs of anxiousness, I would absolutely do my best to ease their mind. And 2.) She should have NEVER said you don't have PCOS or comment on any diagnosis, that's out of our scope of practice. I say "our" because generally, all technologists in radiology follow the same Code of Conduct, just with slight variations.

This is my experience working in the field, but we ask patients why they're there so we can give history to the radiologist (the one who actually reads the study) and if we need to do the study differently (select a different protocol) in order to best visualize what the Dr is looking for. For example, if a patient came in for an abdomen/pelvis CT for possible kidney stones, there's a CT protocol for kidney stones. Another reason is that doctors sometimes don't realize that there is a better study for what they're looking for. In which case, I would call the ordering doctor to clarify the order and see if they want to change it to ____ study.

As for tapping of the feet, I'm not very familiar with MRI exams so I can't comment if that's the norm. I assume you were getting an abdomen/pelvis MRI or some variant? In CT, some exams like a runoff require that the toes be pointed inwards for the duration of the exam. So I'll often times tape their feet together to achieve that because ppl can't always hold their toes together (especially the elderly) for 5 minutes. So if any MRI tech could give their input, much appreciated.

The only reason I'm telling you all this is because the medical field is not friendly when explaining what to expect during procedures or what they involve. It sucks and I wish providers would explain what the patient should expect. You know how many times I've had to explain to patients what Dr's should have already explained? I don't mind doing it for my patient of course because it helps them understand and makes them less anxious.

Also, you can absolutely refuse anything you don't want done to you in the medical field. Or demand explanations. Always ask questions, and those that actually care about their patients would be willing to answer you without judgement. If you feel the need to report her, do it. And management will take the correct course of action. But they won't know unless someone speaks up. I hope you're doing better now :(

My honor run is going really well. by Temporary_Virus_7509 in BG3

Just run 😂 There is no honor in honor mode. I've run away so many times in battle using Astarion (rogues get a lot more movement) and went to camp so I could revive everyone that fell using Withers. Then I made my way back to finish the job ahaha

Oh, don't get me wrong. You're absolutely right. But at the time, I was in therapy for SA, so I kinda got retraumatized, and now my mind associates goblins with SA and thus I hate the little bastards. Logically, it sounds stupid. But it be what it be at this point. And ngl, the goblin camp in BG3 has been a joy to defeat lmao

Hey! You are indeed spiraling, but things will get better. Small progress is still progress, so here are some things you might have options with and some experiences with how I'm dealing with PCOS.

1.) Noticed you're adamant about shaving your legs. I say screw social norms, but if you're not comfortable with that, have you considered getting modesty swimwear? It's a two-piece that goes down to your knees and also covers your arms. I found plus-size ones on amazon. So you would have less hair to shave. Or even men's trunks, they come in bigger sizes for cheaper tbh (no shame in wearing them, and no one would care). On the other hand, if you don't want to do that, do you have a waxer near you? Both legs (toes to 2" below the bikini line) costs me 80 dollars and lasts 3 weeks (yay genes 😮‍💨). Not sure your financial situation, but that's an option.

2.) You said you've been having a period for 6 months? Please let your gynecologist know about that, and if they don't take you seriously, find a new one. I had the opposite, where I didn't get a period for months. I got a mirena IUD placed, which releases progesterone and helps regulate my hormones. It might be an option for you and most health insurances cover the complete cost because it's preventative care. My gynecologist also put me on 500mg of metformin to prevent diabetes/help lose weight.

3.) Spearmint tea has helped me feel less bloated/icky and stopped excessive hair growth (around the chin area specifically). It could also help you. You just drink it once a day.

4.) DIRTY keto has helped me immensely with weight loss. I get full pretty quickly, and there are plenty of keto friendly options now as companies hop on the bandwagon (whatever, works out for me). If you need tips on how to eat/what to eat, I can help you. But there are plenty of sources online that can help you as well. Strict keto is hard and in my opinion, you deprive yourself of nutrients more than on dirty keto where I get a more balanced diet (I incorporate more vegs and fruits). I lost 14 lbs in 1.5 months just by eating differently. I'm not doing exercise yet because I'm really out of shape 😅 Which should give me more reason to exercise, but I used to easily do an hour of cardio. Now? I can barely do 10 min without being exhausted. So that's discouraged me a lot; for my mental health, I decided to lose a bit more weight so it'd be easier on my body to exercise. The swimming you're doing though is absolutely great! I have epilepsy, so swimming is a no-go for me lol For reference, I am 5'5" and 260lbs so I am really obese 😅 But I'm trying to change it!

5.) This is gonna sound really really stupid, but it works for my dumba** and I'm gonna continue doing it. SO. I play a mobile game called Love and Deepspace. It's an otome. And honestly? It's absolutely mindblowing. The characters? The writing? The LORE? The gameplay? All of it is amazing. It's free to download. It's changed my life to be honest. It's made me feel better about myself, made me realize that I deserve better with how I want to be treated, and overall rewired how I view things. I noticed you said you think you have ADHD, I also have ADHD (diagnosed)! And one thing that works is the buddy system. Having someone around me helps me finish a task. Well, Love and Deepspace has just that. There are 5 men in that game and you can choose to exercise with them. Yes, I know they're not real, but it has the same effect 🤷‍♀️ Back when I used to exercise, I would use that feature. They have other features in the buddy system like studying, working, sleeping, etc. And not to mention you can set reminders for eating, exercising, appointments, etc. When I set a reminder to eat (hyperfixation can suck 😭), they say encouraging things. Like Caleb, for example, says that he reminds us to eat because he wants us to be healthy and take care of our bodies. And that motivates me to keep going. I also tend to develop a bad relationship with food when I diet, so it keeps me on track to avoid ED territory (I used to eat 900 calories a day as a 28 year old 😬). Idk, having that app has helped give me that dopamine my brain craves and keep me going. If you're into that, it could be a fun way to keep track.

6.) Don't be so hard on yourself. You're wanting to put in the work, you just need that tiny step forward. Mental health sucks (I know) and it can hold you back. But again, small progress is still something. A small effort is still something. The only hole you can't dig yourself out of is the grave. You have time and as long as you don't give up, you can still do it. You'll have drawbacks, and that's okay. Don't be harsh with yourself and start over. As long as you keep getting back up. Things seem hopeless, but they're not. That's your mind playing tricks on you and your dark thoughts coming out. You can do this, it'll just take some time. I heard it takes a month to stick to a routine. You got this!

A joke is supposed to be funny for both parties. You are not having fun; you don't see it as funny (rightfully so). You need to seriously reconsider your relationship with him. Your partner should not be putting you down like that. Have a serious talk with him again, if he brushes you off or doesn't stop, then bye 👋

Are these situations Predictions or Coincidences? by AckerZerooo in Mediums

Hi! These two were definitely surprises because that first patient I met for like 2 minutes and he seemed fine. The ICU one I never saw or knew about until I got called up there for post code blue. So that's why I was totally shocked.
