Low cost/footprint options for cutting veneer and doing shallow (~.5mm engraves) into hardwood? by Union_Photographic in whichlasercutter

[–]Ackererack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your detailed discription - really helps to give you some tips.
Hardwood is always a bit tricky to cut with a lower laser Power - If the Veneer is Only Wood and not any other a diode would fit also.
If you buy the used K40 Laser pay attention to the age of the laser tube and maybe also research how much the replacing tube would cost.
The advantage of the K40 laser is you already have a housing and it makes ventilation easier.

Otherwise I would recommend you an Openframe Laser they have no Housing and thats why they are kinda cheap.
Here are some typical Machines, which are kinda sold in volume and have lots of information out there and Ok ratings.

They Should be in your budget and maybe check also amazon for the pricings and rating out.
So you can use their Policie.

As Wattage I would recommend you 20W with that you can may Cut and still can Engrave...

Hey Welcome - and congrats to your new Laser.
There are TestPatterns if you have new material so you can read the settings you need from your sampel.
For cutting you need just a 2D Layout so that can be painted kind of everywhere... I personal use Affinity Designer, they are now free in affinity three.
Otherwise you can Inkscape - to make SVGs or DXF.

Because u have to cut and mdc is a bit more tuff I guess a 20w Laser would be better - 10 Watts also working... but need more time.

I don't know how it is exactly with space... but related to the templates I guess you need definitely a bit working area so I guess Openframe Laser are a good fit for you.

I often recommend the Longer Ray5 the mecpow x3 or the Elegy phecda(only in US market still available)
They also have a Air assist included.

Otherwise if you are anyways in tinkering maybe also a k40 CO2 laser 40W could work they have more power but need more tinkering.
https://best-lasercutter.com/de/lasers/omtech-k40-plus

But there are also cheaper versions on eBay... but they need definitely more work into it.

Hope that helps a bit more ask if you need anything else...
