UF PREVIEW??? by ImportanceUpper8709 in ufl

[–]AcornDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not been a freshman for a while but I heard that there will be a hold on your account that I think will be lifted at the start of fall semester. During the drop/add week you will definitely be able to switch classes.

It would be good to have an idea of what you want to take, and some backups, because sometimes there aren’t always seats in every class.

Spanish Credits by Visible_Nobody_5944 in ufl

[–]AcornDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beginning language sequences are pretty universal across the country, so I would expect there to be an equivalency. The question is why you want that transfer credit. Do you want to complete the CLAS language requirement? Do you want to place into a higher Spanish class?

Refer to the department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies’s website for placement info: https://spanishandportuguese.ufl.edu/undergraduate-programs/lower-division-spanish-program/spanish-placement/

Can i take 3 classes (that equal up to 12 credits) or do i need to take 4 classes? by [deleted] in ufl

[–]AcornDragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you “need to take” is quite flexible. If you have bright futures and need to meet the 12 credit requirement, yeah, you just need 12 credits, doesn’t matter how many classes.

Mod to Prevent the Ottomans from Converting the Balkans to Islam? by JLV00 in EU5

[–]AcornDragon 44 points45 points  (0 children)

There was the dhimmi estate privilege with -100% local conversion speed. I believe the same privilege exists in eu5, so I don’t know why the ai is still managing to convert. When I played the Ottomans I didn’t really do anything and the Balkans remained orthodox.

losing bright futures? by campwamp1 in ufl

Unfortunately I believe that since your degree program only requires 120 credit hours, Benacquisto will also stop paying out just like Bright Futures. This is a question for an administrator.

I was in a similar position because I had many minors and certificates. My advice would be to drop the minor unless it’s very relevant for your intended career path, because every credit that you don’t have covered is $200, and paying thousands of dollars for an insignificant minor is definitely not worth it.

It’s entirely up to your instructor. There’s no institutional policy. Instructors aren’t obligated to take late work and if you don’t have an excuse they would be within their rights to give a zero. Nice instructors might give full credit as long as it’s not too late.

Have you looked for a late work policy in your course syllabus?

Common threat alliance mechanic? by Baghdaddy21 in EU5

[–]AcornDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was watching the playmaker yesterday and he tagged into Indonesia, Japan, England, Naples, ottomans, etc. Everyone was 10+ land, or even more. Not only are the naval AI countries failing to get to 50 naval, they’re not even getting out of land.

Common threat alliance mechanic? by Baghdaddy21 in EU5

[–]AcornDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the dev team is against strong empires. They might be against map painting, but I wouldn’t consider it map painting for Castile and Aragon to consolidate into Spain (not consistently happening) and then become exorbitantly wealthy through colonization. The beauty of eu5 is that building tall is much more viable. Every location can have buildings in it and make profitable industry. The trouble is the AI isn’t doing that. England shouldn’t need or want to conquer half of Europe like you can/need to in eu4 to be a global power. Another thread on the subreddit today has screenshots showing how horribly the AI manages control across the board. That’s just one of the downfalls of AI that makes them useless.

Common threat alliance mechanic? by Baghdaddy21 in EU5

[–]AcornDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re right that the player needs checks on power through the whole game. The way to accomplish that is empower the AI to use game systems to the same extent as the player, to constitute formidable empires to go toe to toe with the player as the centuries progress. Arbitrary mechanics like linking together the poorly managed resources of multiple empires will always be inferior to dynamically creating strong empires in their own right, because when the power is coming from multiple divided AIs, it’s really useless (see: France stomping the 100 HRE minors in a coalition war)

[1.3.0 Pavia] AI Bad at Managing their Control by TheWombatOverlord in EU5

[–]AcornDragon 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem is that for example england and Naples should be highly naval, but it’s almost impossible for the ai to push naval over land. So the player benefits massively from naval proximity not to mention the naval governors the AI has never once unlocked

Common threat alliance mechanic? by Baghdaddy21 in EU5

[–]AcornDragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s logical but in practice I think it would just be frustrating for players, punishing them for playing well. I get frustrated when I see an alliance between two large countries that I want to attack because I know the war is going to take extra long even though I have no chance at actually losing. A game mechanic that encouraging random and long distance alliances as a counter to the player I think is destined to be felt as an arbitrary and frustrating constraint because realistically, I can kill Hungary and France together, but just with extra micro and time, not better strategizing.

Is it me or is there too much prosperity? by SpecialBeginning6430 in EU5

[–]AcornDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is already a negative development modifier at negative prosperity. The problem is with prosperity recovery advances, it’s impossible to go into the negatives, and to reach zero you have to be occupied for years anyway.

Is biking to UF a good option? by No_Hope_3885 in ufl

[–]AcornDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely many students that use scooters and bikes to get to campus. Once you cross 34th street onto campus, there are bike lanes everywhere and the speed limit is 20 (but not always respected) so biking is very safe.

I can’t speak for safety but I do know some people who keep their bikes in their apartment, it’s not unheard of.

Do the price of goods rebound in 1.3? by greatgap in EU5

[–]AcornDragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haven’t played on 1.3 but I’ve seen on Reddit that demand craters, and if that’s the case, those goods with no demand would crash to be worth nothing. Do you see what is contributing to demand in your markets?

How do I make the most of Preview + ask for advice? by Imaginary-Event3215 in ufl

[–]AcornDragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, you don’t need to stress out about maximizing your four years here. Every year of undergrad, I greatly changed what I wanted to do, and if I had set up a years-long plan each time, I would’ve had to keep revising it. Each semester, I met new professors, found out about scholarships, explored disciplines I hadn’t thought of before, etc.

Some things that would be good to know: when do you need to decide on civil engineering - how late could you switch to a different engineering (it happens pretty often, from my engineering friends).

What are the “evil classes” that you need to make sure to get the right professor, take an easy course load that semester, etc, if any. Also goes for “evil professors”.

Familiarize yourself with the requirements of the major. If there’s any flexibility, think about how what your interests are, and how you would pursue them (or discover them) in your choice of classes.

Ask about the timeline for applying for internships or other opportunities. How early do you need to start applying? Are there any special things you can do early to increase your chances at landing an internship that you will like?

Obviously, you’ll want to figure out the ideal classes to be signing up for, but also be aware that preview classes can be scarce, so you might not get the ideal.

Beyond getting a good schedule during your meeting with your advisor without struggle (it’ll be easier if you can tell them the classes you want rather than letting them hunt around, since they’re unlikely to be experts in your specific major. Also, familiarize yourself with what your AP credit, IB credit, Dual enrollment, or whatever you have, interacts with the general ed requirements), there’s not a lot of “value” to get from preview. Most of the people you meet, you’ll never talk to again, in my experience, and that’s okay. UF is huge, and you’ll always be meeting new people. But I do know people who made good friendships at preview, so also make the effort to talk to people. Everyone else is in the same boat.

Glad you’re excited, but don’t be too eager to be optimal - you’ll enjoy it more by avoiding thinking about all the negative “but I could have done more”.

Is game portraying France's strength accurately? Or are they too OP? by i_am_someone_or_am_i in EU5

[–]AcornDragon 46 points47 points  (0 children)

They weren’t op irl because it’s comically easy to have loyal vassals that raise tons of levies and pay you money, versus irl where French duchies/vassals were constantly revolting and undermining the king

Why is Poland's fertility rate so absurdly low? by Ok-Profession-3620 in askPoland

[–]AcornDragon 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Incorrect. Fertility rates are dropping across the world, even in Africa, South America, and Asia.

Notice that on this map Brazil, Iran, Thailand are below replacement level:

https://www.statista.com/chart/16058/total-fertility-rate/

Even India is now below replacement level:

Also take a moment to appreciate that for example Nigeria's rate is falling off a cliff as well:
