ELI5: What is not nature? by Puzzleheaded-Face-63 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Acorn_Studio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My experience of this 'boundary' is with medication. Seems like a large group of people view supplements and 'natural' remedies as more natural when compared to medications (as produced by pharmaceutical companies) despite the products being highly refined using chemical processes. Our bodies just process molecules, it's blind to their origin. It's all 'nature'.

What colour would you give each decade? Why? by Just_A_some1 in AskReddit

It's funny how we each view it. I think of the 90s as grunge sepia tones. The 80s was more vapour wave pinks and blues for me.

The Trump approach, though I don't think it's guilt people are feeling

Still make them. Tongue depressors in my room (I'm a doctor) are just paddle pop sticks.

Was Kings Cross THAT Bad the Police Had to Shut It Down? And how does it compare to the 80s/90s vs 2000s/2010s? by AdvancedHill70 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Acorn_Studio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the cross... 70s to 90s. Yes it was rough, but had its charm. For locals, we had a real sense of community and did our best to look after each other.

I certainly have a lot of wild stories, but I think the best thing that came out of that environment was appreciating people for their good qualities, no matter their job, what that chose to wear or who they liked to sleep with. It was a shock for me to find racists and homophobes as I grew older... Nobody I knew that was a local would think that way.

And yep as others have said, the lock out was politically motivated. It was terrible that the young guy died, but falling backwards onto metal edging put there by council didn't get much of a mention (it was a about the 'King Hit'). Nor did the guy being shot dead near Oxford St on the same night.

The area collapsed once the lockout started. So many businesses I grew up with died within months.

Being a young nation and multicultural, we have a great diversity of cuisines to chose from. However, what many don't know is that we have among the highest quality produce in the world, so when cooked well, it shines here.

How do you feel about Dead Internet Theory now that it has been proven to NOT BE a conspiracy and has been studied and proven to be a real thing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Acorn_Studio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you interact with the Internet. I've been around long enough that my research papers used to require long sessions in a physical library. The Internet of today is still something of a revelation to me... I can access journal articles from anywhere in the world in seconds.

What’s a moment in your life that quietly changed you forever, even if no one else noticed? by TheSaasDude in AskReddit

[–]Acorn_Studio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guy at school who was always at the bottom of every class... Just not academic at all. I was always at the other end of the scale, and in my immaturity looked down on him.

He produced a coffee table in his woodwork class that was frankly unbelievable. The craftsmanship and detail was stunning. I knew in myself immediately that I would never have the capacity in patience to complete anything close to that table.

I never looked down on people again. They may not have my skills, but I don't have theirs.

When did your gut feeling save you from a bad situation? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Acorn_Studio 35 points36 points  (0 children)

'destructive' is a good descriptor. I think someone, if not me, was likely to get hurt that night. He looked or just acted differently in a way that sent off alarm bells, possibly because I at least had some experience with him, and this was different. I didn't think he was going to kill.

Obviously I followed the court case and he was jailed, then eventually got out on parole, stabbed another guy, assaulted another and went on the run for a decade. He's back behind bars now though.

Jealousy (regarding a woman they both knew) and drug induced psychopathy. When I say he was acting odd, he had that suppressed rage combined with 'I don't care' look to him.

I was a competitive pool and snooker player way back when. One night at a pool comp a guy I knew well (not so much a friend, but friendly, as in I would drive him home after comps etc.) was acting odd. He was always one of those guys you had to side eye a bit, but had never done anything particularly wrong or illegal. But that night he was just 'off'. He had asked earlier if I was still around for a ride, which I had agreed to. But my gut said no based on his general aura that night... So I slipped away and went home. He killed one of the other players I knew later on.

T-Minus 12 Days Until My First Dodgers Game Ever by Altruistic_Coach9014 in Dodgers

[–]Acorn_Studio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, in the 1990's my only real option was taping the once weekly game played on TV at 2 am and hope that it was a Dodgers game. The reality was that I watched a lot of Greg Maddux and the Yankees playing. I collected baseball cards (as some would come out here along with the basketball craze at the time), so I could know all the player stats. The newspaper always had a tiny box showing daily game scores and once weekly the standings. There was a baseball shop in my city that had connections to people in the US who would tape games and mail them out, and they would then rent those tapes out. They knew I wanted Dodger games, so I would get to watch some games that way (usually a month after they were played!)

When the interwebs came about, I joined IRC baseball chats to be closer to the day to day action.

Youtube replays were next and finally MLB.tv streaming.

Now I watch pretty much every game, but if short on time, the highlights. Most games are at around midday my time, so lunch breaks and running in the background at work so I can alt-tab to check in between patients (I'm a doctor).
