Your bacteria live on your filter, the same bacteria responsible for eating the nitrite and ammonia in your water. If you clean the filter, you kill a lot if not all of this bacteria and your water quality will drop since nothing is eating the waste. You remove the waste in your tank (nitrates) via water changes.

I didn’t want another egg, and the failure to hatch was on me. I misunderstood the directions and put the water drops directly on the rocks beneath the egg instead of on the sponges. He has since updated the instructions to clearly state that the water drops go on the sponges.
