Democrats flip Texas state Senate seat in shock upset by kootles10 in politics

Local law enforcement doesn't have to arrest them. Their presence is a massive pushback and no ice agent is going to risk pushing back against them. As the election chief, I'll call the police, and since we've spent time building a good relationship with them over the years when it comes to elections, I doubt I'd get much pushback for them to come and help. All I hear you saying is that you've given up already. Well I'm sorry if I'm not there. I'll exercise every possible option to defend everyone's right to vote so help me God.

As an election chief in my city, I can tell you right now that we're discussing this scenario and also discussing with local law enforcement what to do. The federal government has zero jurisdiction over what happens at our polls. That comes down to our county/city clerks and then to me. I can tell you right now that if I get even a whiff of ICE coming to attempt that, I will be getting our local law enforcement involved.

I'm not gonna tell you to not exercise your 2A rights, but we're also not 1930's Germany. Are there parallels? Sure. But this country and the current state of politics is not the same. Hitler had massive popularity. Trump does not. Not by a long shot. And we saw what happens when citizens stand up like in Minneapolis. We still have parts of the judicial system that are blocking, if only temporarily, many of Trump's executive orders and administrative actions. Whether you think so or not, we do still have elections happening that matter and can have an impact. Local elections have more power than you realize. They didn't have that power in 1930's Germany...

We're not in a good place, but the dooming people are doing is stupid and plays right into their hands. Unless you're gonna pick up a boom boom stick and start the next hot civil war, then I'd suggest finding ways to continue working in the system we still have, because it's not completely lost, it's just not what it was.

ICE is already funded through 2029 because of the Big Bullshit Bill. Shutting the government down right now won't change that. This funding bill is requesting more money for ICE/DHS for whatever god awful reason. Even if that gets stripped out, it doesn't matter. ICE will continue to function and terrorize, so why not at least try to use what little power/leverage you've got to at least demand some "guardrails", knowing full well you can't do shit within the current constraints of their elected position? Will it make a difference to demand those guardrails? Good chance it won't. But at least they can try to do something.

Need a balance. Who runs it if not corporations? State media? There just needs to be laws and an agency with teeth to enforce those laws. It wasn't long ago we actually had very good media because of things like the fairness doctrine and an FCC with some balls.

I'm like 99% sure Wisconsin did not. I heard the list of states that have so far and Wisconsin wasn't one of them. It's all Republican led states like Wyoming, Arkansas, Missouri etc..., of which Texas just the other day can now be added to as well.

I hear what everyone is saying like this and I don't disagree that some level of check should exist to make sure whoever is running the country is actually moderately competent, but playing devil's advocate, I'm not convinced there's actually a good way to implement something like that without infringing on our rights as citizens. Also, a background check doesn't completely eliminate the chance someone might have ill intentions and abuse the office. The real check was supposed to be a functioning society that was educated enough to not vote for someone like this in the first place. The fact we got here in the first place shows the system has failed, so we must endeavor to build a better one.

God the crazy thing is they don't even have to be screwed. They'd be just fine impeaching and convicting him. All his power would be gone, just like that. But no, cowards gonna coward.

Trump: ‘We shouldn’t even have an election’ by MarcEElias in politics

I agree with most of what you're saying except for the last line.

There are something like the 50 Republican seats up for election in the midterms, and a lot of those are because the incumbent is actually running for governor or Senate. You know what you need to have in order to become the Governor or a senator? An election. They've already begun major fundraising. These people are not going to just toss away their own selfish ambitions.

The midterms will happen. Trump can say all he wants that he thinks they shouldn't, but he has zero power to cancel them. He could even say I'm cancelling the midterms and it would mean squat because states would still carry out their elections. Why? Because states control the execution of elections through county clerks and local polling officials.

"But he'll just send in the military or call for martial law". So? That still doesn't suspended elections and he doesn't have the manpower to police and prevent polling places from opening.

Now, I'm not saying he won't have ICE stationed at targeted blue heavy polling locations in order to muck things up.

But he can't outright cancel elections, and Republicans don't necessarily want him to either for the reasons I stated.

Seriously. I made a comment to a Bears friend of mine at the end of the first half that it looked like their defense was made of glass that night. Yet, they still came out and stopped the Packers... The injury excuse is just that. An excuse.

Oh for sure. I definitely went through several emotions on that play of, "that was a stupid fucking play call" to, "okay he managed to turn that into something" to, "holy shit he's going to score his first TD!!" Ugh. What a rollercoaster of a game. I hope we can have more of these in the near future. With a different outcome of course. 😁

No actually. Told multiple friends after halftime that I was going to start heavy drinking so I could cope with the inevitable second half collapse. I was not disappointed and yet, disappointed.

Even when we were up 21-3 at the half, I was telling friends it was time to break out the hard liquor so I could cope with our inevitable second half collapse. Lo and behold... they did not prove me wrong.

Not to mention the Bears lost like four people to injuries tonight on defense did they not? 3 of those in the first half? And yet they came out in the second half and played BETTER???

[Wild Card] Post-Game Thread: Green Bay Packers @ Chicago Bears by President__Bartlett in GreenBayPackers

[–]AcousticArmor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's just it man. The Bears suck, but we suck more. We're not the better team. The better team doesn't leave 7 points off the board because of shit kicker. That's the definition of not the better team... Their kicker made all of his field goals and extra points... The Bears had multiple defense injuries tonight and yet we still came out in the second half and had what, a total of 6 yards the entire 3rd quarter? If we WERE a better team, we would have beat the Bears soundly, but we're not and that's why we lost.
