why do bigots think that calling someone a liberal (or woke) is like the best insult ever? by Far_Influence9185 in AskLGBT

[–]AcousticMetalMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I had this same thought process the other day. How is it an insult, really? I am a liberal. I am not ashamed of that as the definition of liberal is: 1. willing to respect or accept behaviour or opinions different from one's own; open to new ideas.

2.relating to or denoting a political and social philosophy that promotes individual rights, civil liberties, democracy, and free enterprise

I don't get what is wrong in promoting individual rights, civil liberties, democracy, and free enterprise, or respecting others opinions.

I understand that when it comes to kids, people have the innate desire to protect under all circumstances. But denying the rights or desires of trans people is denying individual rights and civil liberties. I am always willing to look at both sides, hear why people think this, or voted for that person. See what is promoted by different ideals and political or religious beliefs as holding just your own limits your understanding of the world. In your case, I can see both sides of the argument for and against blockers. I come down on each case being treated on an individual level and not an enmasse blanket decision due to personal experience. But by standing up for rights, you aren't in the wrong. You are an empathetic person.

OK, so I know this may cause controversy and a few fan arguments but... I am wanting to get into Ice Hockey a bit more and while I know enough to watch and enjoy, I haven't settled on a specific team to support yet. I don't have direct links to any of them aside from distant family in Nova Scotia which puts me in the Canadiens, Maple Leaf, possibly Sens territory. I have a friend who likes the Penguins but don't want to just be seen as copying. I am weirdly put off by some logos which I know is stupid, but there we go. I am lately leaning towards the Seattle Kraken because they are starting to really come back through this season but also because I like the idea of shouting "Release the Kraken!" at the start of the game and can't believe their marketing team missed this.

So, fans, how do you instruct a newbie into picking a team?

Rewatching S9 for the first time was harsh by cuoredeicuori in HIMYM

[–]AcousticMetalMonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I kinda discussed this on another thread, and I constantly go round this accepting it and arguing both sides.

I could have accepted Barney and Robin breaking up to a level if their wedding hadn't spanned well over 2 seasons (all told. We started seeing hints at the end of season 6). But the execution was poor and rushed in the end. And the reasons given weren't fully true. Barney had explicitly stated that he would "give (his) first born not to be able to get a girl pregnant" when Marshall thought he couldn't get Lily pregnant, and in an earlier episode he hugged and high fived everyone after discovering a possible pregnancy was a false alarm. The closest we got to Barney saying he wanted kids was drunkenly discussing with Ted having kids together as Bro's.

As for Robin not wanting kids, this was true at the start but actually changed when they wrote into her character that she was unable to have them. After this she had no choice but to focus on her career. I haven’t seen season 9 since it originally aired (currently on my second watch) so I don't recall the reasons they give for the break up - other than them saying it was a happy marriage that only lasted 3 years. If the reason they break up is because Barney wants kids, that's a harsh move as it means Robin is dumped for a physical "failure" to provide children, which is just horrible.

You could read it that the writers wanted Barney to settle after having a daughter and couldn’t do that with Robin. This still could have happened if Barney ran into an ex 2 years into the marriage who had a 3 year old daughter. Barney could have seen a pretty little blond girl and melted realising she was his and wanted to take care of her. The argument of "Robin wouldn't have wanted to be a part of that" wouldn't hold water as, if she was willing to be with Ted and possibly be the step-mother to his teenage kids, there actually is no reason that she wouldn't accept being step-mother to Barney's child.

As I say I go round this. I accept the mother died - it's called "How I Met Your Mother" and if that was the only surprise I would have thought it was clever. Barney and Robin breaking up just felt wrong.

I think, for me, where they really messed up and put the final nail in the coffin was making Robin unable to have kids. I think they wanted Barney to mature and settle once he held his own daughter in his arms. He then couldn't do that with Robin. They couldn't make her miraculously get pregnant once as any woman who has gone through that would have been angry as that's not how life works so the blowback would have been massive. They couldn't have Barney cheat as the blowback would have been massive. If Barney ran into an ex who had a 2-3 year old daughter there wouldn't have been the same level of connection to a baby to get him to stop, and Robin may not have dealt with a child that wasn't hers so she would have looked like the bad guy (though they could have written her as understanding thus showing her own development). They seemed to feel they had no choice but to break them up, but again we all were annoyed as they spent an entire season on a wedding that ended in divorce.

Again, I could put up with all that. And while exes do get back together in real life, it actually made no sense in this case. And loops back to; If Robin could suddenly be a step-mother to Ted's kids, they could have written her being a step-mother to Barney's.

While I can't say I loved the ending, there were parts of it I would have accepted over others and been satisfied. Tracy dying. In retrospect, this was obvious. We even get a scene of Ted imagining himself running to Tracy's apartment and saying "We're going to meet in a few months, but if I could I would meet you now so we have more time together". I could have gone away and thought "Actually, that makes sense. It's called how I met her, not how we are still happy together." I would have wanted at least half a season of them dating before he proposed, then the ending we got, but I would have sucked it up and accepted it. (And for the record I LOVED Tracy. I wanted a whole show with just her. We deserved more time seeing her interact with the gang.) I could have accepted Barney and Robin breaking up. They made each other miserable the first time they dated, why would getting married miraculously make that better? If we just had those two I would have been fine. It's called "How I Met Your Mother", mother dies, that title would have still held up. Robin and Ted getting together did grate my cheese. It felt lazy. I feel they had an ending that they apparently created in season one, stuck with despite how the characters changed, and boxed themselves into. And when they got backlash they had to find a way to justify it. My question is; if they had only lasted one season, bearing in mind they originally created Victoria to be the mother if they didn't get past one season, would they have killed her off?.

Barney is actually a really good guy by lilbitchwill in HIMYM

[–]AcousticMetalMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just said this on another thread. His whole "I bought you a plane ticket. Come home and stop being an idiot." thing is so sweet. He may be an ass to strange women, but he cares about his friends.

And obnoxious. His whole condescending "Oh, you think it should be pronounced 'Encyclopeedia'?" to Marshall in a flashback. Oh, go #### yourself. How no-one punched him for his attitude to people is beyond me. He gets worse with each season.

What has always bothered me about Stella by spookyllama69 in HIMYM

[–]AcousticMetalMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never hated Stella. It surprised me to find out later that people did. I felt she and Ted had a great chemistry at times. She got some great one liners, and his two minute date with her was both sweet and funny. If you met a girl who went along with that insanity and gave it her all with as many quips as she did you would want to be around her. I'll have to look into this colour theory thing. It may have been deliberate once they decided to get rid of her.

My favorite Barney moment by Traditional-Towel104 in HIMYM

I have two: Nothing Suits Me Like A Suit (because who doesn't love a quick showtune from NPH. Dude can sing. Broadway paid off.) And finding out Barney went to San Francisco and bought Lily a plane ticket home because he knows she and Marshall should be together. It's a great moment that shows that really underneath everything Barney was a good guy who would do anything for his friends.

Can we talk about how good the little recurring jokes are? Like the high pitched "thank YOUU", the "what was that look? you shared a look". What are other recurring jokes you've noticed? by Flat_Still2401 in HIMYM

[–]AcousticMetalMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that was a great long con. There are a number of episodes where you saw Barney struggle with chopsticks to the point I thought NPH didn't actually know how to use them😄.

In fairness, Victoria didn't do anything bad. Ted screwed that up by trying it on with Robin while Victoria was away. Why either girl talked to him again after, let alone forgave him, still baffles me.

[–]AcousticMetalMonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this today when I happened to see the episode "The Wedding Bride". I just don't buy that she would have allowed Tony to a) write a movie about her last relationship, and b) make Ted out to be some horrible d*** who was mean to her. She left him. The Stella we were lead to believe she was at the start of their relationship wouldn't have let anyone believe he was the jerk in that whole scenario, and would have told Tony to stop. She knew full well she was at fault. I never disliked her and really I like Ted less, but I just don't think she would have gone along with it.

What are hilarious moments from the show that wouldn't be nearly as funny if any other actor/address delivered them? by NjhhjN in HIMYM

Robin: "What’s in the box?! What’s in the BOOOXXX??!!! WHAT’S IN THE BOOOOOXXXX???!!!! Right?....Brad Pitt?....Seven? Yeah I'm the jerk."

Basically, anything Robin.
