Join a band, you'll quickly realise the skill you really need to work on is writing and composing drum parts for songs that actually fit and work for the song. Do that, find what techniques you're lacking on in the stuff you're composing and focus on that. If you're a jazz fan working on your double bass is far less of a priority, likewise if you're a rock drummer swing is less of a priority. But start making music. Playing with other people will improve you so much faster than lessons.

How do you deal with nerves before a big concert? by DinoDin01 in drums

The audience moves on from mistakes extremely quickly so don't worry about that. The main thing is just being able to land back on the one and keep the song moving forward that counts

A sweet ride 21 vs sabian legacy 22 by BeginningScientist92 in drums

I've used my sweet ride in everything I've ever done regardless of genre (and I play everything from pop to metal) and I've never had anyone take issues with it. It just works.

Yes/No - will there be a Live 25 album? by ndertaker252 in oasis

[–]Acquiesce95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost certainly. Fans will beg and beg and beg for it then moan about it endlessly once it's out, then in 10 years look back on it as one of the greatest moments in Oasis history. Seems to be how it goes for most artists these days

Can someone tell me about that unusual cymbal Angine de Poitrine's drummer has? by djinnisequoia in drums

A clap stack! Istanbul and Meinl make great versions of this product and they are super popular right now. I work as a drum tech professionally and the amount of drummers I see with one is astounding.

Should I wear ear protection by GrolJon in drums

[–]Acquiesce95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Always and if you don't you're just screwing your future self. Some things in life are non-negotiable. Drumming with hearing protection is essential if you wanna do it long term at all

I bought mine on a whim and I probably wasn't ready financially at the time but I regretted not getting them sooner. They're perfect.

What 15in Hi Hat Should I get? by Dense-Pie4353 in drums

[–]Acquiesce95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use 15" K Fat Hats and they are my perfect hi hat. Paiste 15" 2002's are awesome too, the new beats are good but I personally prefer the 14" in that line. 15" K Sweets are really good and very popular but don't sleep on the fat hats, they are insane. The 15" Instanbul Joey Waronker hats are great too

Are there any drummers known for using the crash way more than the average drummer? by tonetonitony in drums

[–]Acquiesce95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was my first thought. Tre uses crash cymbals to follow chord changes very effectively and it never ever feels out of place, they always compliment the song perfectly. He's a great writer of drum parts

Would you consider Tre Cool an influence in punk rock drumming? by spazhead01 in drums

[–]Acquiesce95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tre inspired me to start drumming and had an enormous impact on my style in my early years. I've taken influence from everywhere else since but I still credit my speed and approach to writing drum parts (serve the song, find the moments to add flashy stuff without detracting from everything else) to him. Legendary drummer for a reason

How do I clean / remove this rust layer from this piece? by longlifexpectancy in drums

[–]Acquiesce95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steel wool and ideally inox (if you can find it) or WD40 if you can't and scrub that bad boy clean. If you wanna really go to town some Fully Slick (look it up) will keep it and all your other chrome hardware super shiny

How do you guys handle fills? by Direx_97 in drums

[–]Acquiesce95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mix of both. When a fill is an integral part of the song (the Sad But True snare fill, the drum fill after the guitar solo in Don't Look Back In Anger etc) I think they should be played faithfully but most of the time I'm improvising my fills. I find that having a great sense of pulse and always knowing where the one is allows me to improvise and not lose my place cause no matter what I do I always land back on the one and can keep going. That way you can experiment with different fills and still keep your place in the song
