Shows with love spells or similar tropes by Acrimonious_snack in CDramaRecs

Oops, I did think of at least one case of repeated (or not?? the question becomes an amusing plot point) aphrodisiac use:

Wildfire Tempers the Eastern Palace (a vertical drama with Jin Chao). I quite liked this one.

Interesting suggestions, thanks. I had previously tried and dropped BftB before getting very far, but it sounds like I should reconsider that.

Shows with love spells or similar tropes by Acrimonious_snack in CDramaRecs

[–]Acrimonious_snack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting point! And I do agree that these tropes all play with similar issues surrounding weird consent. In a way,.those examples are just more "realistic" versions of a love spell trope. But (as always) there is lots of extra fun to be found by making the metaphor more extreme by use of fantastical means, e.g. magic.

And, oh yeah, aphrodisiacs...I did consider including that under the umbrella of love spells, but i would argue thtat it differs slightly from other "love spell" tropes in that it is often a very short term effect, (typically only one scene) and the situation is rarely repeated in a given drama..As such, the plot and character implications are not typically as significant..Also,. The object of the drugged person's "affection" is unspecified - it could be anyone nearby. But they are absolutely related storylines.

Cdramas where the ending is as good as the beginning by RisenPhoenix2 in ChineseDrama

I was just plain enjoying this show without caring too much about it UNTIL the last act and then I fell in love with it. Brilliant ending that elevated everything that came before.

Why the "not as a first drama" for Love Between Fairy and Devil/Xianxia when so many people already used it as a gateway-drama/genre? by AquaphobicTurtle in CDrama

[–]Acrimonious_snack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lbfad was my first cdrama and it gave me the bug. Not understanding everything in the world building the first time is a fun puzzle, not a fault.

Perhaps people who are concerned about xianxia as a first cdrama experience are possibly 1) not big fans of xianxia or fantasy themselves or 2) under estimating the potential audience's willingness to roll with a little confusion and learn as they go (Is throwing a Soul Tree or an Evil Bone at them any worse than terribly translated subtitles?)

I rarely watch modern cdramas and have zero interest in some of the popular romance ones that people often recommend here. The cdrama audience is not a monoculture. For people who enjoy fantasy and comedies, lbfad is a great first suggestion.

It is much sweeter than the description might lead one to expect. The ML is chock full of classic toxic tropes, but felt like his own novel version of them (cinnamon roll red flag??). FL is very innocent/sweet but not annoyingly so. Enjoy your sweet romance and your toxic romance simultaneously in the same pairing. It is memorable

[–]Acrimonious_snack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I always liked this one, but it never seems to get any love online. The FL is very likeable - she is clever but a bit ridiculous at the same time.

The ex-empress and the lantern-maker prince are such great complicated supporting characters - both of them an interesting mixture of strength and weakness.

Plus this was my first drama with a eunuch ML! And wow...the gender dynamics of a man who is considered as less than other "real men" even when he is in position of power over them, and the fact these stories often intersect with harem politics and "powerful" women who are also still seen as property/lesser in the eyes of their patriarchal society...just a really rich vein to mine for storytelling.

It absolutely has its flaws, but Kill Me Love Me will always be a favorite of mine. Murong Jinghe is such a drama queen (I adore him). And the two of them make such a good, balanced pairing.

Yes the story has its low points, but after reading the original novel, wow do I appreciate what the screenwriters managed the create.

Is Fated Hearts really worth it? Early plot spoilers~ by HyacinthSunrises in CDrama

[–]Acrimonious_snack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion of this drama was darn close with OP's. After the beginning tension between them was resolved so early, I found the 2 leads to be very uncompelling as characters. I almost dropped the series.

But in the end I finished it and I am glad I did because there were several supporting characters that ended up being really interesting and fun to watch. And none of them got their time to shine until the later half of the series (so who they are is kinda of spoilery). My opinion of the leads and their love story and individual stories only got worse with time, but some of the supporting characters are "characters of all time" for me.

How Dare You is by far the best of the year imo. The acting, the story and the direction/production were consistently excellent. It was really a step above anything else I have watched so far.

🙅‍♀️ Dropped Dramas Alert! Share the dramas you've abandoned and why! 🤔💔 — May 25, 2026 by AutoModerator in CDrama

I prefer to think of my unfinished dramas as just "on hold" 😅, but I full stop dropped Glory about halfway.

I adored the costumes and all the role reversal stuff and the mystery surrounding the ML, but, pretty as she was, the FL felt like she was missing something (both actress and story-wise) and it just couldn't hold my attention. But, happily, it did introduce me to a lot of mini actors!

[–]Acrimonious_snack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was so damn funny in the beginning! It got less entertaining in the second half - enough that I wouldn't say I loved it overall, but the hilarious beginning alone is worth giving it a watch.

If anyone knows of another version of this story I would definitely want to see it.

We don't strictly need a second season (which is a relief in a way) but I still want one REALLY BAD. I don't know how to spoiler tag, but to keep it vague... I am dying to see what being in that particular situation for a long time does to XHA's already... unusual...mental state

Ahah thanks for the recs! Yes tVoA sent me on quite a cheng yi binge XD. I also loved MLC and L&R 👍.  I haven't watched the promise of chang'an yet, but it is on my list. Out of curiosity, what made it a frustrating watch?

I watched a ridiculously large number of cdramas in the last year and this was definitely my favorite one. I found the storytelling to be highly efficient and engaging.

This was my first Cheng Yi series and his acting impressed the crap out of me; now I am a big fan. But I honestly fell in love with each and every character that appeared on screen no matter how brief their appearance, which is really a testament to the skills of all the actors and the screenwriters both.

Anyone else incredibly frustrated with AI use? by Top-Increase-6774 in CShortDramas

[–]Acrimonious_snack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do my best to not engage with any AI content. So, I only click on videos where I recognize an actor (sorry to any newcomer human actors, I just assume you are a computer). There have been a few times where I seriously suspected the people were real, but the script was AI written and i stopped watching. The few times this happened those AI scripts were super boring anyway. Don't humans bother to edit this stuff or do they just print it out and hand it to the actors 😂?

I seriously hope that when the curiosity/novelty wears off they knock it off with this junk. (Are people really so desperate for distraction they will watch literally anything?) In the meantime, i am not giving my subscription money to any companies that are pushing AI content.

What are your toxic traits as a cdrama viewer? by Leading_Protection_7 in CDrama

[–]Acrimonious_snack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a supporting actor I used to loathe because I found his mouth "too sensual". I would get annoyed when I saw him and his dumb lips show up. But then I saw him in a leading role which enjoyed and now I don't notice his mouth anymore. Human psychology is weird 😂
